Why in the world would you try to force it? You will get the latest definition update the next time defender checks for updates, which is usually several times a day. Or you can manually check for updates at any time. Settings>privacy and security>windows security>virus & threat protection updates>check for updates.

No that's pure coincidence. These updates happen several times a day and mine just updated itself to 150 a few monents ago automatically.. You need to stop worrying yourself about these! ;-)

Maybe you should check for updates on Windows Update first. If there is a new version of Defender or other dependency you must install it before it can update the virus definitions.

Well, I check Win. Update a couple of times @ day, sometimes I get a Win. Security (Broadband) update, which seems to my security components current. This seems to work well for me. Good Luck.

Users don't really need to be concerned about signature updates as most of the hard work is via cloud lookup. MS Defender is heavily dependant on the cloud backend for overall protection.

I frequently use that website at work because Microsoft Security Essentials for Windows 7 can no longer download the updates automatically. But the installers won't work if there is a new version. They just start and close without doing anything. I have to run Windows Update, install the available security update and then use the installers to update the virus definitions. Sometimes running the Microsoft Security Essentials definitions updater is enough. Sometimes I have to also run the Windows Defender for Windows 7 definitions updater as well.
