Is my system ready for 24H2 without force installing?

How does a person know whether to "force" install Windows 11 24H2 from Microsoft's web site via ISO image without experiencing known issues or problems, or if they are bypassing one of Microsoft's blocks? Based on what I have heard and read, if Windows 11 24H2 does not install through Windows Update, this is considered a "forced" install.

Microsoft does not provide a method, as far as I know, to determine if a system can install Windows 11 24H2 without any known issues or blocks. There are many Windows 11 23H2 system that do not see the 24H2 update in Windows Update and would like to update to it. However, they do not want to "force" install Windows 11 24H2 with problems.

On my systems that currently run Windows 11 Pro 23H2 does not show Windows 11 24H2 in Windows Update. I like it so far, but I wonder if Microsoft is blocking 24H2 on my system for some reason that I am not aware about.

I cannot answer your primary question but do have one for you.

Do you have a full system image backup before you attempt to update to 24H2?

Unfortunately, there are NO fool proof guarantees in anything.

Windows 11 24H2 is a gradual roll out, and all good things come to those that wait.

There is nothing stopping you from taking a backup of your current system, then force installing the update yourself, check it out, but if you have issues you can restore your system back to the way it was.

There are plenty of helpful guides on the site, that will help with backing up your system, and or installing 24H2 yourself.

Create the installation on a USB using Rufus. Can be used for either clean install or update.

Search for "Rufus" posts in these and other forums.

No matter which, image your existing system first (Macrium Reflect and/or AOMEI Backupper - both freeware versions)

Your hardware and your Windows version are compatible.
Make a full OS backup, then....

I have 4 devices in this household, the first was done automatically about 3 weeks ago, the last only yesterday

The roll-out of 24H2 is programmed by MS based on geographical location, device type/make/model, etc

Don’t do it.
You could trip over the posts by members here who have 24H2 installed and aren’t exactly happy.

Just go into the Windows 11 News section of this forum and open any thread that has 24H2 in the title. Scroll through a couple of pages deep.
As much as there are some members that say they have no problems, the rest mention bugs that still haven’t been addressed since the October 24H2 release. Even after yesterdays updates, some members are reporting that bugs which were apparently supposed to be fixed, aren’t

My opinion is be patient. As long as you have compatible hardware, it will be offered to you in Windows Update, eventually. Very few members have reported 24H2 showing up in Windows Update. There is no rhyme or reason as to how Microsoft discriminates between who is worthy and who needs to wait.

Maybe when it is offered to you, Microsoft may of addressed the lag fest that is 24H2.

On the other hand, if you truly can’t wait. Upgrading is easy.

My window 11 box at home hasn't been offered it, and I'm just going to wait until it does.

If you really want to do the upgrade now, make a backup image and give it a try. You don't have much to lose other than time, and if it doesn't work out, you can always restore from your image.

However, this question has been asked from many business- and end-users asking me how can they tell if they can force install the Windows 11 24H2 upgrade without any problems. I tell them mostly to wait for 24H2 or try it out with backing up their system(s) first. Majority of users do not back up their system, much less know how to accomplish a successful backup/restore options.

I searched through many web sites, forums, etc. without finding this answer or possible answers/solutions except for the one that many people do not know how to do.

I currently use Lazesoft Disk Image and Clone software to backup/restore my systems. I previously used Macrium Reflect, and it was good for a while.

As you can see, you will get differing opinions on the matter.

The safest thing to do, of course, is to wait until Microsoft offers you the upgrade.

If you are like me, you install the updates on day one

Somewhere in between is to wait a little while to see what issues are found, and maybe then you decide to do an update before it is offered to you.

The main thing is to be aware of your options for recovery if an upgrade goes wrong. Typically Windows will allow you to roll back, but as has been noted, having a good backup is a good idea.

One other consideration is simply time. Make sure to give yourself plenty of time, especially is case something goes wrong and you have to restore your backup.

Other than that, it's really up to you. Are there are any features in 24H2 that you are really looking forward to? If so, then you may want to install now. If there is nothing you really feel like you need to have now, then wait for it to be offered to you.

My own personal experience: I have installed on roughly a dozen machines and have had success on every system, although I admittedly typically perform a clean install rather than an upgrade. While most of my system are Windows 11 compatible, I have a few as old as 15 years, but even though they technically do not meet Win 11 requirements, they all work just fine.

CPU must have SSE 4.2
Motherboard needs TPM2

You can trick Windows into thinking you are TPM2 compatible (if you aren’t)

You cannot trick Windows into thinking you have SSE4.2

If your CPU doesn’t have SSE 4.2, then trying to install 24H2 is futile.

Upgrading is easy if they are supported and just as easy if they’re not.

Creating install media using RUFUS 4.6 can overcome unsupported hardware.

I have probably upgraded or installed Windows 11 Pro 24H2 over several hundred of computers and only some of them I had to install back to Windows 11 23H2 for various compatibility reasons.

Most of the bugs are superficial IMO
I found build .1742 to be the most bug free. The ISO for that build is still available via Microsoft ISO direct download (Not Media Creation Tool)
But having your system setup properly to deny upgrades from that version is key.

If the people asking are NOT computer geeks... just tell them to wait.
Comps can easily be forced to run 24H2... but there will be some tweaking and bug acceptance required.

And if they do force the upgrade, and things aren't what they expected... they'll be calling YOU for help. ^^

They'll be like... "Yo dawg, I upgraded to 24H2 and this and this and this don't work, or don't work like they used to, and I need it fixed in 15 seconds".

There were a few people (non-tech savvy users) that installed Windows 11 24H2 where I had to go put their system back to Windows 11 23H2. After 10 days installed period, you cannot go back to the previous version. Reloading and rebuilding computers configurations, etc. takes time when they do not back up anything. In some cases, Windows 11 24H2 automatically installed when there was incompatible proprietary software installed.
