One of my Windows 11 systems has a \Windows\Installer\ folder that is nearly 40GB large. Is PatchCleaner safe to use to 'cleanup' the folder?

Software last updated almost 10 years ago, not reported as compatible with Win 11.

Yeah, it will probably work, it's just that the author does not mention it, probably because development ended before Windows 11 came out.
As always, backup your PC before experimenting. :-)

I will not use the program on Windows 11 as the PatchCleaner runs on Windows 7, 8, and 10, .Net framework 4.52. plus Windows Server.

I use it to identify and remove orphan installer files - saves me time from doing it manually. It seems to still work correctly, I have verified it. You can choose to move the file to a folder rather than deleting it. That is what I do. You can use it to just identify orphans if you are wary

On doing a search, I find some posts where the \Windows\Installer folder is hundreds of gigabytes! It seems like there is a real need for some method of cleaning this up without killing Windows!

FYI, It is perfectly fine to use in Windows 11.
Although it's 10 Year old without update becauce there's nothing to update, the procedure is the same as previous Windows.
PatchCleaner, when run will scan C:\Windows\Installer for entries existed in registry under:
Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall
If it does not exist, it will mark the entry as orphan.

PC hasn't been updated for ages and the last time I used it many years ago it broke Office. Using it now would be a brave decision.

MS office does not store its uninstaller info in C:\Windows\Installer
but under a hidden folder C:\MSOCache, if you delete this folder, You will be unable to uninstall it.

Out of curiousity I did a search using PatchCleaner to see what it had to say about my 21GB Installer file. It found 4.9GB of files, but at least several of them appear to be for currently installed applications. I did also see some entries for stuff I have uninstalled in the list. I didn't let it update anything as the 21GB is no big deal, I have 355GB free space on the Windows drive.

I have office 2024 and I can assure you there is no such directory.

True to that. Those installers might seem worthless (waste of space) - but some apps still need them to function properly - and that's also where the installers data is stored (without it... good luck properly removing/uninstalling most apps - even with Revo, Bull-Crap or any other 3rd party uninstaller). You'll also get errors while trying to upgrade those apps (unless, they're also portable - but many apps are dependent of their installer - to be identified properly).

I had the same problem with Installer folder (20+ GB) and a 128GB hard drive. After reading numerous forums, Adobe Acrobat (PDF viewing only) seems to be the major space hog. I downloaded TreeSize and PatchCleaner to see what they found (Adobe). I uninstalled Adobe Acrobat and saw an immediate drop of 9GB from the Installer folder. I rebooted and saw another 2GB drop. I then reinstalled Adobe. The installer folder did not increase since uninstalling Adobe. I also noticed an additional 3GB of space removed from the Installer folder. A total of 12GB of space recovered. My two cents.
