I never could get it to work. On two XP SP2 laptops and a desktop, I never could wake the machines from hibernation and had to power down and re-boot in order to get them out of that hibernated state. On my old Sony VAIO I also had to pop out the battery and then put it back in, in order to power them back on. This was back when laptops had removable batteries. (Remember those?---

To this day I delete the hiberfil file and either leave the machine(s) powered on or powered off with no in-betweens. Only the screen(s) go dark after 5 minutes if I'm away from them doing something else.

I think you misunderstand hibernation. The purpose of hibernation (and sleep) is to save the state of Windows and running programs. When you power back up your programs are the same state as they were before you went into hibernation. For example, if you were in the middle of editing a document in Word then when you came out of hibernation Word would be open right where you left off.

For true hibernation when you hibernate then the computer is completely powered off. The only way to come out of hibernation is to press the power button. Some computers support hybrid sleep. If it supports it and it is enabled then you can press a key or move the mouse to start the computer that is in hibernation.

Hybrid sleep is a Windows power feature that combines standard Sleep and Hibernate modes. It saves your open documents and programs to both your RAM and your hard drive, then puts the PC into a low-power state. It allows for fast wake-ups while protecting your data during power outages.

I have an old desktop computer that had problems coming out sleep. I disabled sleep and set it hibernate after 2 hours. Since I enabled hybrid sleep then I can use the keyboard or mouse to start the computer when it is in hibernation.

The first thing I do is disable hibernate, to me that's a useless capability. It takes as long as a full boot to recover or at least close. I use S3 sleep since my computers are all running on a UPS.

It's a misnomer that so many peope refer to modern standby as being sleep. Modern standby is NOT sleep. It is a separate power state all its own. Some,not many and mostly Dells, have bios that allow the user to enable S3 sleep mode. However, since yours is a 2 in one and can go into tablet mode, I highly doubt yours can. However it would be worth a try to check. See this thread Post #4 Be sure to make sure you are running the latest uefi bios.

Heat is also a by-product of modern standby issues. There have even been reports of a device catching fire. If you are unable to solve your issue using the above thread, DO strongly consider using a cooling pad or at least raising up the back of the device to allow more circulation. DON'T leave it with the lid closed without turning it off. DON'T carry it in an enclosed bag without turning it off.

Just some notes about Dells, since we have a ton of them.

They've basically phased out S3 on newer laptops. This happened two, maybe three years ago. You'll even see the option to enable S3 in current models' UEFI, but it doesn't do anything.
If you disconnect AC power before you close the lid, it will go into network disconnected standby. It won't try to install updates and other background stuff, so it likely will not overheat in a bag. I've carried my last two Dells like this and never had a problem.

You got me curious so just checked both my newer machines but neither my Core Ultra 9 or Snapdragon ARM64 can convert from S0 modern Standby to S3 sleep. Only my older I7 machine has it. No ACPI S3 support in my firmware. Turns out ARM architecture never supported S3.

Dell ufi bios for most 10th generation devices could enable S3 and a few 11th generation (which this user shows to have.) S3 was pretty much phased out by 12th generation mobile devices as @TraderGary said. I do not think Dell would have ever allowed it in 2 in 1 devices but that's a guess on my part, not a fact.
I know my friend bought a all-in-one Dell 11th gen and it used s0 as it had a laptop motherboard in it. I was able to enable s3 on it.

Dell was especially notorious for pushing BIOS updates on several of their laptop models that, once they had pushed such an update onto your laptop "successfully", there was no more way for you to get S3 back even though previously you could. And no, trying to revert back to an older BIOS version wouldn't work either, as it just kept refusing to downgrade the BIOS. Not stupid. lol. Stubborn stupid.

I have a 15 year old desktop. Sleep is disabled, hibernation is enabled, and hybrid sleep is enabled. Also, fast startup is disabled. If I press any key or move the mouse the computer comes out of hibernation. It only takes 30 seconds to do so. That is faster than a cold boot.

BTW, it also helps that the computer uses 2.5" SATA SSDs. That is much faster than the 3.5" SATA HDDs they replaced.

My desktop cold boots in 11 to 12 seconds but I have NVMe drives.

S3 sleep works perfectly and resuming from sleep to desktop takes 1-2 seconds.

I could reboot, my system takes around 20 seconds from power off. However, S3 sleep allows me to just pick up where I left off it I walk away in the middle of a task, and it only takes a few seconds to wake up.

Just thought I'd mention I finally solved the IR camara issue and it now works instantly again. It was broken by a setting in the MS Wintoys app.

No, PowerToys is a totally separate app, which I also use. Wintoys is a Microsoft app that can be found in the MS Store and is also a tweaking customization app that allows you quickly and easily change some settings vs manually doing them with reg tweaks and Settings menu changes etc. It's similar to Winaerao Tweaker. You can turn off those annoying Onedrive and MS 365 ads and Web ads in the start menu search and settings for example.

Anyhow I discovered the app was the cause for breaking my IR Camera as well as stopping certain Settings modules from loading and freezing the Settings App after I restored it to the default settings and everything worked again as supposed to. After spending probably an hour digging through all the tweaks I found the one causing the issue under the Tweak/Privacy settings. The Camera on/off indicator was the cause. It flashes a notice on the screen when your camera turns on or off but was breaking stuff. With it turned back off all is back to normal now and IR camera works great. Took me long enough to discover that was the cause after jumping through all kinds of hoops for nothing listening to Co-Piloy LOL.

My system is about 35 seconds on a cold boot to an active desktop. However after that there's still all the background housekeeping/delayed services still starting up for some time. As you point out, with S3 sleep, press a button and you're right back where you left off in a couple of seconds. My LG C4 is slower starting up, even with quick start enabled on it.
