Is there any difference between Beta and Release Preview Channels any more?

As far as I can tell, these are the same thing now.

Also I did not fully appreciate this when updating optional cumulative updates, that I am effectively running Beta/RP anyway.

In other words, am I correct in saying to stay of formal release version, you should not install optional build updates.

I don't think there is nowadays so I have gone back to the Dev as the Beta never changed I made my machine dual boot as dev is a bit unreliable
Optional builds are asking you to test them them for MS

Yeah - I had assumed (never a good plan) that the optional updates were essentially Release Preview updates that had been released to Release Preview Channel a couple of weeks or so earlier. That is how RP used to work.

Beta used to be like an earlier version of DEV that had been well tested, and was always ahead of RP (but converged close to Release).

However DEV versions are more like the old Skip Ahead now, and are always ahead of Release and no longer cascade to Beta.

So, in effect, Beta/RP are the same thing now as far as I can tell (and you agree basically).

I just see no point anymore of two Channels.

Funnily enough Dev build has been quite stable until last few build where MS obviously stepped up a gear releasing a lot of new (but not particularly useful) options, and they have been much more buggy than before.

You can't help feeling a new boss is cracking the whip, and things are going out with minimal testing! I do not have a big issue with this, except when they break standard features (like right click of Windows). Bugs on new features - name of the game, new bugs on old well tested features - pure sloppiness!

I think at some point 22H2 will arrive in these channels - Beta first then RP.

That is point of my post. Normally Beta got updates ahead of RP, but now they seem to be in sync. Beta and RP used to converge close to release.

So why would Beta diverge now this late in the day, then reconverge - makes no sense at all.

That is something many of us have said many a time when it comes to Microsoft.

When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

No - next update is 22H2. MS have said W11 will only get annual updates.
Terminology used by MS tends to be imprecise - you get updates all the time with cumulative updates. Build UPGRADES will only be annual for Windows 11.

MS have been experimenting with more efficient ways of doing updates, so in essence some features are being added all the time, but some will only turn up with build upgrade (either marketing or need to make significant OS change?).

In the end, it is semantics to a degree.

One of my desktop didn't get the update and they have always got them the same day (KB5011563)

There is now. Until the next Dev release the Beta and Dev channels are the same. Today's release is one of those rare opportunities for those in the Dev channel to switch to the Beta channel without doing a clean install.

Whatever is being offered on the Release Preview channel is what will be offered to the general public, and it's usually done in quick succession. The Beta and Dev channels are now separate entities, and the Dev channel offers changes that are pretty much experiments. Between Beta and Dev, I choose Beta any day since there are, usually, a lot less problems/issues.
