Is this normal for an update?

I don't necessarily have a problem but I am curious if anyone else has seen this behavior.

Yesterday, in Windows Update, I noticed that 22H2 was available for download and install. So I clicked on the link and started the download. It took a while but it finally finished the download and started the install. At around 75% completion, it paused and said it was checking for updates. It found an update (KB5017859) and then prompted me to download and install. What happened to 22H2?

I finished the download and install of the update and restarted the computer. When it came back up, the WU again prompted me to install 22H2. This laptop started out on W10 and I have seen a lot of updates since it was new, but never saw an update pause and change direction.

Are we talking about more than one computer here?
It seems that you are on 22H2 and up-to-date, aka, 22621.521

Well... 22H2 was 22621.3xx, then there were two cumulative updates to get to 22621.521

And KB5017859 was the .NET Framework update.



Then, there was another update (not offered through Windows Update), to get to 22621.525

No, this is just one computer. I have other computers but they are still running W10 and don't qualify for W11.

I did an update on the 24th (KB5017383) and the next thing I saw was the 22H2 update. Why didn't it show me that the other update (KB5017859) was needed, before the 22H2 update? All cumulative updates were done before the 22H2 update.

Ok... Windows 11 is still fairly new. 22H2 is still in diapers.
Microsoft is still trying to figure out a decent update system for Windows 10, and the update system for Windows 11 is kind of like... "throw all the updates at a computer and see what sticks".

My best advice is to come up with a great backup system, and just go with the flow.
Try to keep the "used space" on the C:\ drive as small as possible, so backups and restores are.... fast.

You ask 10 people how they moved to 22H2, you'll get 10 different answers.


Probably the best way to keep track of the updates is to keep checking here, on Tuesdays and Thursdays...

If you click on the purple icon for the regular Windows Updates... the list will sort and only show you the regular Windows Updates... etc.
Same for the blue Insider updates.

Thanks. Like I said initially, I am just curious if anyone else has seen this behavior. I just never heard of MS interrupting their own download/install to download/install something else.

Beyond that, everything else seems to be working normally. The only annoyance I found is the clock/calendar in the right of the Task Bar. Now it has a Notification window above the calendar, even when there are no notifications. It didn't do this before the updates. I don't mind it showing notifications, but if there aren't any, why is it there and how do I get rid of it? I guess I will figure that out eventually.

I noticed the notifications thing as well. I don't think there's a solution... yet.

More, for Win 11 in general...


I did an In-Place Upgrade from 22000.1042 to 22H2.
Once on 22H2 I started tweaking to the way I liked things.

I saved each tweak in a folder. Here is that folder.
It doesn't have all my tweaks... just the ones I did "since" 22H2.
They are pretty self explanatory. I think they are all in tutorials here and on Ten Forums.

These are my favorite "Tweaks of the Month".
