Solved JPG files will only open in a browser


Probably the file he tries to open is a reference (aka shortcut) to the original .jpg file and has been deleted hence the error message. Or it is corrupt. Try opening a different .jpg file, even better from a different folder.

He can restore the good old Windows Photo Viewer (desktop application) which works perfectly in Windows 10/11. Its only drawback is that it doesn't open certain modern image formats and that it might give you an error for a very large (many Megapixels) file.

Please open an elevated command prompt and then enter the following commands:

Spapakons gave the fix at number 28. I am 85 and have a habit of quitting everything except stuff like a good movie on the TV so I can get a good night's sleep. About 5:30 am this morning I became very happy. Thanks to all who posted. You guys are what makes the world go round. Also, I will be keeping the info on Chkdsk.
