Just noticed (by accident) that 2H23 EOLs this November. Microsoft more aggressive?

So not long after I manage to completely get off Win 10 2H22, I will need to get off Win 11 2H23. Will MS sell you another year of 2H23 support?? Is Microsoft getting more aggressive about shorter support periods?

I wonder what this portends for almost mandatory adoption of CoPilot. And adoption of Windows 12 once it launches.

Nope.

It’s as Burton linked you. Same for every update. 24H2 will be the same when 25H2 appears, you’ll have until 12 months after 25H2, at which point 24H2 is buried.

Unless 25H2 is bypassed for Windows 12. (Highly unlikely)

But Windows 10 2H22 got 3 years. Was that an exception to the 2 year rule?

W10 22H2 was the last stop for W10. W11 is (so far) rolling forward with an annual refresh since 2021.

Also, there were 2 updates a year but Win10 stopped with only one and Win11 has only once a year.

23H2 is Win11, that is (currently) not included in the Win10 ESU program. Only Win10 22H2 is included.
So when Win11 23H2 goes eol the only option (currently) is Win11 24H2.

ISTR Win11 24H2 is slated for EOL 11-2026, basically the same EOL date as WIn10 22H2 plus the ESU 1yr option 10-2026.

So what is the option starting 11-2026? Win 12? IDK Microsoft has not said.
Me, I'll probably choose Linux, it already runs fine on my Win10 box.
And I'll put Win10 in a VM in case I need it. Already have Win11 23H2 in a VM on my Win10 box.

Especially new latest kernel 6.14x with Copilot support comming too. Here's Fedora F42 (with KDE desktop) running as a VM on HYPER-V = runs perfectly as file server, media server, Internet gateway, Internet server, backup repository etc etc. using a minimum amount of CPU and other resources.



But if you don't want the latest stuff - various LTSC versions by Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora etc will work and be supported for years

I'm about to try this release (Fedora F42) as a HOST on a spare machine and run Windows 11 as a KVM/QEMU VM -- runs very efficiently as does HYPER-V but a bit more flexible with dynamic redirection and pass thru of Host devices once I've tested that the current VM is stable enough. My main problem with 24H2 updates is that it keeps breaking Networking and other odd unpredictable things. Unless you are running some sort of versions of Windows servers the current roll out of Windows with the diverse delivery to various channels (canary, beta etc) and even then rollouts to similar machines not delivered at the same time is just plain bonkers unless you regularly enjoy tinkeringa nd patching machines.

Sorry Jimbo, but Fedora, in my opinion, is a pretty poor example of a positive Linux alternative to those wanting to avoid regular Windows version upgrades. Fedora's complete Version Upgrades at roughly 6-monthly intervals; plus regular in version updates that make Windows 'Patch Tuesday' updates seem puny and insignificant in comparison! If someone doesn't want to feel pressured to 'upgrade' an Operating System on a regular basis then a Debian-based or non-rolling release RHEL-based Linux alternative, such as Rocky Linux, has to be a better option for stability and long-term support. The ever growing plethora of alterntive Linux "AppStores" being forced on users, e.g. Ubuntu and 'Snap Apps' is also an increasing challenge when considering which 'Linux' distribution as a viable alternative.

One thing to watch for now, saw a nice Notebook advertised at a decent price until I saw it was a Copilot + machine, won't be needing that.
