Had to run Easybcd to tidy up again.

With these recent builds, 1 step forwards, 1 step back!

It's been like that for a while now.

You don't need easybcd -- just use bcdedit from command line - either from within windows itself or from command line from Windows install medium (-- repair windows->command line) or from within Macrium - command line if you created the stand alone restore version with PE rather than RE.

If you need to re-install / update the bootloader simply run bcdboot.

My multi-boot menu has three entries, Windows 11 Beta (as a .vhdx native boot, set as default), Windows 10 (on a normal partition), and Macrium Reflect (part of the Win10 install).

Perhaps because I already had the vhdx set as the default I have had nothing 'mangled' apart from it renaming my Windows 11 Beta' to just 'Windows 11' (which I then change back using bcdedit). This was my third upgrade of this native boot .vhdx, and it has been the same experience each time.

Yeah I think yiu have nailed it.

Howeve in my case, the vhds are not default, so it ends up reordering entries.

It only takes a couple of minutes to reorder using easybcd.

It seemed to make sense that, as it needed to restart to complete the upgrade, then it should be the default.

Next time a vhd needs an upgrade you could try changing it to be the default until the upgrade has completed, then set the default back to your preferred OS.

No need to make it default as it does that.

The problem is if the upgrade fails, you can end up with a corrupted bcd as well, and sometimes you cannot get to point to run another OS.

I always have a Macrium Reflect usb drive if bcd gets truly mangled to rebuild bcd for host boot entry. Unfortunately I found if you simply restore a backup of efi partition, the vhd entry for the upgraded vhd often falls over, and you have to delete it and recreate entry.

Surely, it cannot be that difficult to restore default boot drive after upgrade is finished - I never want to change my default drive.

As an aside, for very strange reasons if I use bcdboot command on the Dev or Beta commands, it upsets something, and if I boot from a Macrium Reflect boot entry, it only appears in 800x600 low res, despite have set low res setting in Reflect. However, if I use easybcd, I do not get that issue. It is not just Reflect - it is any winpe boot drive (like one created by Kyhi's XPE tool).

This issue only started when the Insider version changed the initial booting circling dots to a circling snake (as I call it).

Good idea -- but also another easier one probably is to create a winpe bootable USB drive -- works a treat - you get booted straight into "Admin Command mode" and you can do all sorts of things,

To access for example VHDX drives (or VHD) simply run diskpart, select vdisk file=<full path to file name>, attach vdisk, list disk / list vol , assign letter = V (or whatever). Now you can muck around with it to your hearts content.

BTW installing W11 from scratch via DISM /Apply-Image I found a lot of "Unknown devices" but doing "update driver" from within the booted up copy and selected from the W10 vdisk folder e:\windows\system32 and clicking on include subfiolders all my unknown devices were OK. (E was the disk letter of the W10 vdisk).

For running BCDBOOT from a new windows install you need to ensure that the correct EFI partition is available (You can in Diskpart on list vol, select the vol (it's probably your one marked "Hidden" and depending on the size - probably 100Mb) -- then assign letter=S then simply run the bootmanager from the new windows directory with parameters /s S: /f UEFI

I prefer if running multiple versions of Windows from VHDX drives is to have a single drive with ONE efi partition, and all the other windows installs as VHDX files on that drive, all the VHDX files simply a bog standard NTFS partition and then use dism /apply-image to the appropriate vhdx file. If you want multiple "Physical" windows installs on a single disk --seems to me the easiest way to do it.

On multiple disks then OK other methods needed.

BCDEDIT also is good from the winpe boot -- you can rename / re-order / delete boot entries.

"Circling Snake" boots W10 also without issue on my Multi boot Windows disk. The whoile kybosh works also on an external USB drive for those wanting to make Windows to Go installs without needing any 3rd party programs or fancy options.

(BTW also works for Windows HOME -- no HYPER-V or VM compoments need to be selected - just "Bog standard Windows").

If I remember, it was me who first brought native boot vhds to your attention LOL.

All I have is an annoying but minor glitch that takes less than 30 seconds to sort with easybcd.

last night I updated windows 11 to version 22h2 build 22616.1 but you no longer hear the audio with the speakers and headphones, and with the professional equipment to record my songs.
Drivers, speakers and more are 100% working and a few minutes before the update everything was fine.
Could anyone help me? Without audio I cannot work.

Go to device manager - Sound, video and game controllers - your audio card (mine is Realtek) then right click and select update driver. Select Browse my computer for drivers, then Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer. Select your sound card then next. Reboot.

I've given up since the 598 versions to update using Windows Update, just refuses to work. Only way I've been able to do these since then is using ISO and do in place upgrade. Same message whenever I run SetUpDiag
