  • Staff
UPDATE 8/9:

July 21, 2022—KB5015882 (OS Build 22000.832) Preview

For information about Windows update terminology, see the article about the types of Windows updates and the monthly quality update types. For an overview of Windows 11 (original release), see its update history page.

Note Follow @WindowsUpdate to find out when new content is published to the Windows release health dashboard.

Highlights

  • New! Gives you the option to receive urgent notifications when focus assist is on. Focus assist is like a do not disturb mode that hides notifications.
  • New! Gives you the option to update to a newer Windows 11 version at the very first startup of Windows if your device is eligible.
  • Addresses an issue that causes File Explorer to stop working when you use the play and pause keyboard buttons on certain devices.
  • Addresses an issue that causes File Explorer to stop working when you use the Start menu’s context menu (Win+X) and an external monitor is connected to your device.
  • Addresses an issue that displays a blank window that you cannot close when you hover over the search icon on the taskbar.
  • Addresses an issue that prevents certain troubleshooting tools from opening.

Improvements

This non-security update includes quality improvements. Key changes include:
  • New! Provides the ability for you to consent to receive urgent notifications when focus assist is on.
  • New! Provides the option for eligible devices to update to a newer Windows 11 version during the out-of-box experience (OOBE) when you first sign in. If you choose to update to a newer version, the update process will begin shortly after the update is installed on the device.
  • New! Restores functionality for Windows Autopilot deployment scenarios that are affected by the security mitigation for hardware reuse. This update removes the one-time use restriction for self-deploying mode (SDM) and pre-provisioning (PP). This update also re-enables any User Principal Name (UPN) display in user-driven mode (UDM) deployments for approved manufacturers.
  • Addresses an issue in UIAutomation() that causes an application to stop working.
  • Addresses an issue that prevents the Startup Task API from working as expected for certain apps.
  • Improves the reliability of a push-button reset after an OS upgrade.
  • Addresses an issue that makes the tenant restrictions event logging channel inaccessible if you remove the EN-US language pack.
  • Addresses an issue that causes certificate-based machine account authentication to fail in some circumstances after you install the May 10, 2022 security updates on domain controllers.
  • Addresses an issue that affects the Arm64EC code you build using the Windows 11 software development kit (SDK).
  • Updates the Remove-Item cmdlet to properly interact with Microsoft OneDrive folders.
  • Addresses an issue that prevents certain troubleshooting tools from opening.
  • Addresses an issue that causes port mapping conflicts for containers.
  • Addresses an issue that causes Code Integrity to continue trusting a file after the file has been modified.
  • Addresses an issue that might cause Windows to stop working when you enable Windows Defender Application Control with the Intelligent Security Graph feature turned on.
  • Deploys search highlights to devices. To access the policy for search highlights (on a device that has installed the June 2022 Cumulative Update Preview or July 2022 monthly quality update), go to C:\Windows\PolicyDefinitions and locate Search.admx. For your convenience, we will be publishing an updated version of the Administrative Templates (.admx) for Windows 11, version 21H2 to the Microsoft Download Center soon.
  • Addresses an issue that causes explorer.exe to stop working when you use the play and pause keyboard buttons on certain devices.
  • Addresses an issue that causes explorer.exe to stop working when you use the Start menu’s context menu (Win+X) and an external monitor is connected to your device.
  • Addresses an issue that displays a blank window that you cannot close when you hover over the search icon on the taskbar.
  • Reduces the overhead of resource contention in high input/output operations per second (IOPS) scenarios that have many threads contending on a single file.
  • Addresses an issue that causes the Windows profile service to fail sporadically. The failure might occur when signing in. The error message is, “gpsvc service failed to sign in. Access denied”.
If you installed earlier updates, only the new updates contained in this package will be downloaded and installed on your device.

How to get this update

Before installing this update

Microsoft combines the latest servicing stack update (SSU) for your operating system with the latest cumulative update (LCU). For general information about SSUs, see Servicing stack updates and Servicing Stack Updates (SSU): Frequently Asked Questions.

Install this update

Release ChannelAvailableNext Step
Windows Update or Microsoft UpdateYesGo to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. In the Optional updates available area, you’ll find the link to download and install the update.
Windows Update for BusinessNoNone. These changes will be included in the next security update to this channel.
Microsoft Update CatalogYesTo get the standalone package for this update, go to the Microsoft Update Catalog website.
Windows Server Update Services (WSUS)NoYou can import this update into WSUS manually. See the Microsoft Update Catalog for instructions.

If you want to remove the LCU

To remove the LCU after installing the combined SSU and LCU package, use the DISM/Remove-Package command line option with the LCU package name as the argument. You can find the package name by using this command: DISM /online /get-packages.

Running Windows Update Standalone Installer (wusa.exe) with the /uninstall switch on the combined package will not work because the combined package contains the SSU. You cannot remove the SSU from the system after installation.

No - I just am unsure why anyone would ever have thought that there might be a legitimate reason for multiple attempts to break into a system in a very short time, and would not have included some kind of way to prevent that from happening from the early days of networking. Clearly it is a highly desirable feature for Microsoft to add.

That's something that only Microsoft could answer.
My guess would be that previously... it offered some coding difficulty that has since been overcome?

My cynical side feels that with Windows 11, Microsoft has set "looks" and/or smart phone compatibility to a higher priority, than other more useful functions.

I have also tried those but it has not made any corrections to the update history. If I check Winver I am on version .832.

Those tools check for and fix any problems with Windows System Files and Windows file structure.

The only other solution I can offer is a new clean installation of Windows. As always, be sure you have securely backed up your data.

Ok guys, I've problems in the past with certain cumlative updates and in my experience MS has something in their install scripts that may not play well with Dot NET3.5. Try the following to see if it helps. If it doesn't work hopefully you won't have harmed anything and you can recover as you have done in the past. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A BACKUP YOU CAN RECOVER FROM IF THIS DOESN'T WORK!
  • Go into Windows Features and turn off NET Framework 3.5
  • Reboot the system
  • Disable Antivirus software (in my case it was MalwareBytes' Real-Time Protection, I did leave MS Defender running)
  • Open the Services.msc and ensure both "Background Intelligent Transfer Service" (BITS) is set to "Auto" and running, and the "Windows Update" service is running and set to "Automatic (Trigger Start)"
  • Download the update from the Microsoft Update Catalog and run the installer.
    • NOTE: It will take a LONG time for the install process. It may look like it hangs at 35% and around 68%, (sometimes this is machine specific) but if you check your CPU usage and look at what's running in the task manager you will probably see it's actually installing, albeit very slowly.
    • (I walked away from my system (for several hours) and sometime while I was gone, it installed and rebooted the system, so I don't know how long it actually took.)
  • Restart your anitvirus application
  • Re-install the DOT NET 3.5 in the Windows Features
  • Reboot the system
  • Check yous system (run WINVER) and look at the update history which should hopefully reflect the update installed successfully.
Now for the odd part: When you do another Windows Update, it may show you still need to install the update you just installed. (I don't know why this happens, it's like things that are installed via the catalog don't talk to the windows update service.) Try and let the system go ahead and do the automatic update (again). In my case I historically did this twice, once with KB5015582 which worked. It did successfully update again with no problems, and once with the latest 22H2 update in which the (2nd) automatic update failed. What I ended up doing for that was that since it had successfully updated from the process above I ran WUSHOWHIDE to hide the 22H2 pending automatic update and everything seems to be fine. I'm running 22H2 and Update isn't pestering me to do it again.

I hope this works for you, it did for me. But, remember everybody's system is different, so your results may vary.
