KB5017383 - Fails to Install


This update worked fine and no issues with installation. The subsequent one KB5016629 is where the problems started with the spinning circle.
Are you still stuck there? My Update History shows 10 successful updates since the KB5016629 update.

KB5015882 dated 7/21 was the lat cumulative update that worked for me and all the other updates like .NET etc. are updating o.k. and it's just the cumulative updates subsequent to KB5015882 that I am having issues with.

If you haven't been able to do a cumulative update since July, why not start fresh with a clean install? And make sure your data is securely backed up!

If I am going to do that, I think I'll wait for a stable release of 22H2 once all the bugs are ironed out. Too much trouble to have to reinstall all programs. I was hoping to troubleshoot and identify the actual culprit. Lot of people are having these issues and I am sure MS is aware. I suspect it's some driver issue but all my drivers are up to date. I did clean boot and turned off all non-MS services from loading. One would think that MS would have a timer that after the failure of an install would terminate the update and spit out a log as to where and what caused the update failure. The spinning dots is totally useless if it spins forever...

So far, my current release of 22H2 has been stable. My guess is that it's because I don't run any of the popular apps that modify the OS and try to make W11 look and act like W10. I clean install often enough that it's quick and easy for me. I can do one in less than an hour while using my second computer.
I did an experiment and I uninstalled practically everything that I thought was old and running in compatibility mode. I have FiOS Gigabit so that's not the issue plus I downloaded the ISO. I have a feeling it's getting stuck in the first boot phase after POST. At first I thought it was a corrupted BCD and I rebuilt it but it didn't make a difference. Now my suspicion is towards some driver specific to the MB but they are all up to date based CCleaner Driver Updater. My board is a Gigabyte Z390 UD and I am wondering if there's some hardware driver that is not compatible with the later releases. I'll try a complete reinstall to test that theory.

I came across this Win 11 Cumulative update KB5016629 failing to install due to Malwarebytes and it sheds some light on what's going on. Bottom line is that Microsoft's new updates have some issues playing nice with other software not just MB. People have had issues with updates even when they don't have MB installed on their system. They are supposedly aware of this and hopefully one day in the not so distant future they'll resolve this without reinstalling the entire OS. You can stay put till then or spend countless hours troubleshooting and trying all sorts of workaround. What works for one person may not work for others as many posts on different forums have suggested. Wish MS would publically state this somewhere on their site so people don't waste their time. Shouldn't have to research this in forums to get updates. The fact that they force some updates and break your system is even more annoying. I had that with KB5016629 and had to download an app to hide that update because WU kept downloading and installing it. Give the user the ability it to decide and if the update is that critical then make sure it's bug free.
