UPDATE 12/13:

 Windows Blogs:

UPDATE 12/12: We are starting to roll out Cumulative Update Build 26010.1010 (KB5034015). This update does not include anything new and is designed to test our servicing pipeline for builds in the Canary Channel.

Hello Windows Insiders, today we are releasing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26010 to the Canary Channel.

REMINDER: As builds released to the Canary Channel are “hot off the presses,” we will offer limited documentation for builds flighted to the Canary Channel including documenting only the most significant and highly impactful known issues. Please note that we will not publish a blog post for every flight – only when new features are available in a build.

New widgets board settings

We’ve updated the widget settings experience, providing more ways for users to customize their widgets board experience. One of the new settings enables you to just show widgets on your widgets board and another makes it easier for you to discover how to personalize your feed content.

The new settings experience also allows you to select the account you want to use for your Microsoft Start powered widgets and feeds. This means you are no longer limited to using the account you used to sign into Windows to drive those experiences, just like your other app powered widgets. You can easily manage the account used by Microsoft Start by navigating to ‘Microsoft Start’ settings under the ‘Personalize your content’ section in your widgets board settings. This change allows you to further personalize the experience to your preferences. The new settings experience is not limited by region.

[We are beginning to roll this out to Windows Insiders in the Canary, Dev, and Beta Channels this week, so the experience isn’t available to all Insiders just yet as we plan to monitor feedback before pushing it out to everyone.]

FEEDBACK: Please file feedback in Feedback Hub (WIN + F) under Desktop Environment > Widgets.

Changes and Improvements

[General]

  • The Tips app is removed after updating to Build 26002 and higher. The Tips app is deprecated.

[Copilot in Windows*]

  • We are trying out the ability to “undock” Copilot in Windows with Windows Insiders. Just click the new icon to unpin the Copilot panel at the top right in the header. While undocked, Copilot can appear above or below other apps in Windows while maintaining its fixed position on the desktop. This allows users to access Copilot while minimizing disruption to other user activities. Additionally, can resize the Copilot window for a more comfortable experience. Simply click-and-drag the edge of the Copilot window to adjust the width to your needs.

[Taskbar & System Tray]

  • After trying out a scrollable view of quick settings with some Windows Insiders in the Canary Channel starting with Build 25967, we’re beginning to roll this out again with some slight refinements. This new scrolling view of quick actions allows you to rearrange the set of quick settings and provides better usability and discoverability for the user.

[Task Manager]

[Settings]

  • Optional features previously listed under Settings > Apps has moved to its own page under Settings > System.

Fixes for known issues

  • Fixed an issue which was causing the restart button to be missing in Settings > Windows Update, or for that settings page to not load at all with the previous flight. If you are on Build 26002 and encounter this trying to upgrade to Build 26010, you can reboot by clicking the Windows Update icon in the system tray or open Start and reboot from the power button there.
  • Fixed an issue where attempting to rebooting into safe mode would hang on the boot logo.
  • Fixed an issue causing some Insiders to experience an increase in bugchecks in the last two flights.
  • Fixed a high hitting taskhostw.exe crash in the last flight which some Insiders were seeing on their PCs.
  • Made some improvements to help address an issue where the background could be seen jumping when switching between desktops.
  • Fixed an issue which was causing File Explorer to revert to the previous design and opening the context menu to crash explorer.exe for some Insiders.

Known issues

[General]

  • [REMINDER] Some popular games may not work correctly on the most recent Insider Preview builds in the Canary Channel. Please be sure to submit feedback in Feedback Hub on any issues you see with playing games on these builds.
  • [NEW] We’re investigating an issue where keyboard shortcuts are not working on the desktop – including using the delete key to delete files off of your desktop, CTRL key combos to take action on desktop icons, or using ALT + F4 on the desktop to open the shutdown dialog. As a workaround for the former, please use the Desktop folder within File Explorer.
  • [NEW] We’re investigating an issue where opening the print queue is showing a messaging saying it can’t find the app.
  • [ADDED] We’re aware of issues with WinRE (Windows Recovery Environment) not rendering correctly. A fix is coming in a future flight.

[Widgets]

  • [NEW] The Microsoft 365, Outlook Calendar, and To Do widgets get stuck in an error state when the Microsoft Start feed is disabled. FIXED as of 12/8.
  • [NEW] You may experience a loading delay when the Microsoft Start feed is reenabled.
  • [NEW] Announcements from the Microsoft Start feed are still shown on the taskbar after the feed is hidden.
  • [NEW] The Widgets Board should automatically close and reopen when enabling or disabling feeds.
  • [NEW] Keyboard navigation from settings subpages back to the top-level Settings page is broken.
  • [NEW] Incorrect spacing and fonts used in some settings pages.

Windows Server Preview

With Windows Server Preview Build 26010, we are introducing the ability to receive Server flights just like on client (desktop). To set up flighting on Server, just navigate to Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program to opt in your device. Flighting will only be available for the Canary Channel and flights for Server will begin in early 2024 so you won’t receive any new builds until then. Our intention is to flight the same builds as client (desktop) for Server flights but the schedule in which we release Server flights might differ slightly (for example – Server releases bi-weekly). Flighting for Server only applies to the Desktop Experience only. For more information on Windows Server Preview Build 26010, see this post here.

Notepad Update

We are rolling out an update for Notepad (version 11.2311.29.0) to Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channels that introduces the following improvements:

Edit with Notepad: Easily access Notepad for file modifications directly from File Explorer. Just right-click on any file or multiple files in File Explorer to find the [Edit with Notepad] option in the context menu, a quick and streamlined way to open and edit files in Notepad.

New Edit with Notepad option in the context menu in File Explorer.

Character Count: Keep track of your document’s length with the new character count display in the status bar. When text is selected, the status bar shows the character count for both the selected text and the entire document. If no text is selected, the character count for the entire document is displayed, ensuring you always have a clear view of your document’s length.

FEEDBACK: Please file feedback in Feedback Hub (WIN + F) under Apps > Notepad.

Microsoft Store Update

Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channels running version 22311.xxxx.x of the Microsoft Store and higher will see the following improvement rolling out:

Install as you browse: Introducing another quick way to get your favorite products: you can now install directly while browsing. Simply browse through the Store’s Home, Apps, or Games pages and hover over a product and click the install button. There are now fewer clicks to dive into new apps.

Install an app directly as you browse in the Microsoft Store.

Improving discoverability of instant games: A few months ago, the Microsoft Store introduced games that you can play without downloading. We’re making it easier to discover these games by having a dedicated page you can browse.

Performance while browsing: We’ve made performance improvements in the Microsoft Store that will make it smoother for you to browse and scroll through various pages.

FEEDBACK: Please file feedback in Feedback Hub (WIN + F) under Microsoft Store.

For developers

You can download the latest Windows Insider SDK at aka.ms/windowsinsidersdk.

SDK NuGet packages are now also flighting at NuGet Gallery | WindowsSDK which include:
These NuGet packages provide more granular access to the SDK and better integration in CI/CD pipelines.

SDK flights are now published for both the Canary and Dev Channels, so be sure to choose the right version for your Insider Channel.

Remember to use adaptive code when targeting new APIs to make sure your app runs on all customer machines, particularly when building against the Dev Channel SDK. Feature detection is recommended over OS version checks, as OS version checks are unreliable and will not work as expected in all cases.

About the Canary Channel

The Canary Channel is the place to preview platform changes that require longer-lead time before getting released to customers. Some examples of this include major changes to the Windows kernel, new APIs, etc. Builds that we release to the Canary Channel should not be seen as matched to any specific release of Windows and some of the changes we try out in the Canary Channel will never ship, and others could show up in future Windows releases when they’re ready.

The builds that will be flighted to the Canary Channel are “hot off the presses,” flighting very soon after they are built, which means very little validation and documentation will be done before they are offered to Insiders. These builds could include major issues that could result in not being able to use your PC correctly or even in some rare cases require you to reinstall Windows. We will offer limited documentation for the Canary Channel, but we will not publish a blog post for every flight – only when new features are available in a build.

Our Canary Channel won’t receive daily builds; however, we may ramp up releasing builds more frequently in the future.

The desktop watermark you see at the lower right corner of your desktop is normal for these pre-release builds.

*Availability of Copilot in Windows:
Copilot in Windows in preview is being rolled out gradually to Windows Insiders in select global markets. The initial markets for the Copilot in Windows preview include North America, United Kingdom and parts of Asia and South America. It is our intention to add additional markets over time.

I still don't have tabs on my new desktop. I haven't updated my old desktop. Probably do it tonight or tomorrow.
I started my new desktop this afternoon when I got home from work and I see that the tabbed File Explorer is back. I did update to SAB 3.7.1 so I don't know for sure if it was the new build or the SAB update.

As you know I went back to using WU to install AMD drivers (not using the desktop version) because it was less hassle for me. So I followed your lead with AMD drivers. Uninstalled Version 30.0.13044.1 and rebooted. WU installed v27.20.11044.5003.

The advanced boot menu still has some artifacting but just leaving the cursor over what I needed selecting and pressing the enter key got me through to safe mode eventually.

ASUS recommends the later driver and even WU shows as optional update.

The AMD software is no longer compatible (what's new) but will leave as is for now to see if the later driver will work in the next flight or so. Great sleuthing!
My machines have Nvidia Display drivers and Intel Display drivers at the latest level. None of the workarounds mentioned here allow me to get a usable Recovery environment.
This Build 26010 is just another typical MS screwup. They had this same problem not too long ago. 😝🤬🤷‍♂️

Interesting workaround.
Somebody posted this on twitter about the recovery environment bug, and it is a good workaround.

With that I could also verify that the Safe Mode bug has been fixed, no more stuck with the boot logo. 👍

I will try to see if the same workaround applies on the clean install setup. 😎

Edit:
I tried a clean install setup and managed to work through using the keyboard when possible. Still had some weird rendering but got through the whole process and completed the clean install.
Messy process, I hope they get a fix on next build.

Finally got out of a month spent in Microsoft jail after changing my security address so I have the privilege of entering a 7-digit code to reset my PIN. Lots of stuff to download. It's a QQEMU/KVM VM but when I reboot into Debian I will have to go through the whole thing again I want to run it. This is unlike any other VM. A true annoyance.

I'm curious, does this issue also exist for those with touchscreens? I haven't tried it since I do have a touchscreen on my notebook but my Canary is under a Beta Windows Hyper-V VM so it might have different results.

I think the problem could not be reproduced with VM. I rarely or never use VM on PCs.
I worked with VM for 30 years with the IBM mainframes.
Still had to go native MVS to find some of the bugs that could not reproduce with VM.
Similar story with VM on PCs. 😂😎
I have a touch screen on my laptop, but I don't use it for insider builds. 🤷‍♂️
I think it will fail the same way.

@Almighty1,

Here is another silly change from 26002 to 26010, now with 26010 the button is dark unless you put the cursor on it. 😂🤷‍♂️
I don't know why both builds lost the feedback sound when I click on that volume adjustment button. 😵‍💫🤐
I hope it was not intentional. 🤐😝🤬

Yes, I couldn't reproduce it in the VM using the mouse, touchpad or touchscreen.

The feedback sound in Canary only works on an Older PC that uses Realtek High Definition Sound driver.
But no longer works on newer Dell desktops with any of these adapters, while it works with any other Builds.
1702317141069.png

Also, with 26010 the button is now black unless I put the mouse pointer over it, really silly. 🤣🤣
I think some users were complaining about the feedback sound, so some one at MS had the stupid idea of eliminating it instead of making it optional.

Three cases with Build 26010.
1) No color on the button when the mouse pointer is away.
1702316612913.png

2) Button has visible color when the mouse pointer is near the button.
1702316664939.png

3) Button has visible color + volume level indication above when the mouse pointer is over the button.
1702316763105.png

I wonder who at MS came up with this crazy idea. 🤣🤣🤣🤷‍♂️
I want the feedback sound back. 😉

Do you have the sound feedback when you click on the button with Build 26010?

My laptop is a Lenovo Yoga 920 with the same Intel UHD 630 adapter that you show, had no issues with touch screen.
It was originally on windows 10 and the upgraded to windows 11 without any issues.

If Windows 12 is going to be released in 6 months, where are the Insider builds? Just wondering

@fg2001gf11F - I would say someone at MS who doesn't have a Dell. Not sure what they use now but I remember their entire lab was supposedly CompaQ before HP took over CPQ. I am running 26010 on a Beta Insiders Hyper-V, not a actual machine. As mentioned in the other touchscreen thread, I fixed the problem already. The issue appears to be that Windows 11 when I did a repair install replaced the Intel Serial IO driver with a 10.x driver from July 18, 1968 and installing Intel's Serial IO driver fixed it because it added back the 2 Intel Serial IO I2C devices in addition to the Intel Serial IO GPIO device so Human Interface Devices because of the I2C also showed the missing devices as it broke both the touchscreen and the touchpad's gestures as Windows didn't see the gestures feature either. I just don't use either to notice the when the function disappeared but I can say it was after October 23, 2021 as that was when I last installed the Intel Serial IO driver.

Thanks, for the explanation about the I2C drivers, my I2C drivers are all at version 22621.2506.
As for the sound feedback on the volume button at 26002 and 26010, Maison da Silva upvoted my FBH report and escalated it, he can see the same problem.

As I said earlier, VM is a completely different game. 😂😎🤷‍♂️
Also, I don't have that missing sound problem on an old XPS 8700 that uses the Realtek High-Definition Audio driver, the problem is only on the newer desktops with Intel and Nvidia Audio drivers.

@fg2001gf11F - there are two different I2C's. The I2C listed under Human Interface Devices, I have 2 of them as my machine also supports a optional Pen and those are always autogenerated and uses Microsoft:
1702345025473.png
but in order for some of the things in Human Interface Devices including the above I2C to even be detected, it requires the Intel Serial IO I2C to show up in the System Devices section as when I did the repair install, as it only showed:
Intel Serial IO GPIO with some Microsoft provided driver and nothing else with the Intel Serial IO GPIO name.
1702345537598.png
After installing the actual Intel Serial IO drivers, it showed:
Intel Serial IO GPIO
Intel Serial IO I2C
Intel Serial IO I2C
for 3 Intel Serial IO devices in total so the Intel Serial IO I2C is what made the Human Interface Devices section showed the I2C and everything else.

I wonder how many devices really has Realtek hardware as I know on my notebook, it starts as Intel audio drivers if you uninstall everything and then Realtek basically replaces the Intel audio drivers. While I have had a desktop with built in audio but I disabled it as I used a high-end SB Audigy 2ZS Platinum Pro, I have never had a desktop with internal graphics that is part of the CPU so that's probably the Intel Audio you are referring to which is part of the integrated Intel GPU.

@Amighty1,
So many different variables!
I just backed up my Lenovo yoga 920 Laptop with UHD touch screen and upgrading to Build 26010 to see what else will pop up.
I'll get back with the results. 😎😵‍💫
After that I'll restore my backup with current public build 22631.2792. 😉

Edit:
Here it is at 26010.1000. the feedback sound on the volume adjust works fine and the volume button has the same color as volume slider bar.
Works just fine on this laptop.
No idea what MS is doing on the desktops that use Nvidia or Intel UHD 630 Display Audio. 🤷‍♂️

@fg2001gf11F - The Intel Serial IO driver also contains Intel Serial IO UART , Intel Serial IO SPI which my device does not have. Ofcourse I don't have a Realtek Hardware Support Application device either which everyone else appears to have.

Well, this is the second machine I have tried with 26010 with no problem with Sound feedback on the volume slider, nor the silly color difference on the volume button.
Not a coincidence that they both use the Realtek High Definition Audio with the speakers controlled directly by the Realtek audio out.

The 2 desktops with the problem, Dell XPS 8940 and XPS 8930, have external monitors with speakers, connected with HDMI or Display Ports to an NVIDIA RTX Display adapter.
I even tried moving the monitor HDMI connection to the built in Intel UHD 630 adapter and still got the same issue. Then I tried connecting speakers to the Realtek audio out and still did not work.
It is definitely another MS screwup, given that the same hardware works fine with any other insider build, R.P., Beta, Dev except for the last 2 Canary builds 26002 and 26010. 😝🤬
So much for their internal testing! 😂😝🤐

The other difference with these 2 that work correctly is that I skipped 26002 all together and upgraded directly form public build 22631 to 26010.
That will be my next test on one of the failing desktops. 😉🤞

Upgrading directly form Dev 23601 to Canary 26010 got me the normal sound behavior. 👍
Now I have to see if there is some other update coming down with W.U. that may screw things up.
Stay tuned.

For now, it works normally selecting either output. 😉
