Hello Windows Insiders, today we are releasing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26120.961 (KB5038575) to the Dev Channel.

REMINDER: Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel will now receive updates based on Windows 11, version 24H2 via an enablement package (Build 26120.xxxx). For Insiders in the Dev Channel who want to be the first to get features gradually rolled out to you, you can turn ON the toggle (shown in the image below) to get the latest updates as they are available via Settings > Windows Update. Over time, we will increase the rollouts of features to everyone with the toggle turned on. Should you keep this toggle off, new features will gradually be rolled out to your device over time once they are ready.

Only assuming that the first 5 digits Build# in the installation media is equal or higher than the one already installed. 😎😉
upgrade or update/repair in place 😉

One exception is for those Build# changed just by an enablement package and have the same base Build#,

There is one small exception to that, the case where the major build number has been increased with a feature update by means of an Enablement Package and shares a common set of system files. For example, Windows 10 versions 2004 up to 22H2 (19041 up to 19045), Windows 11 22H2 and 23H2 (22021 and 22031) or 24H2 RP and Dev (26100 and 26120).

For these examples only, you can do an in-place upgrade with the ISO with a 'lower' build number as long as it is one that shares the same base build of system files. For example, you can 'upgrade' W10 version 22H2 build 19045 with an ISO for W10 version 2004 build 19041. You will however end up with the lower major build number when done.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, 1920x1080 touchscreen, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine. As its new home has an existing digital licence for Pro I've been able to upgrade the migrated OS from Home to Pro.

    My SYSTEM EIGHT is a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e (5th gen) type 20LN, Celeron N4120, 8GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, a supported device for Windows 11. Currently running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Dev, Beta, and Canary builds as native boot vhdx.
This thread is getting a bit boring now -- the SIMPLEST way of getting Windows to run on almost any sort of hardware -- supported or otherwise provided the hardware can boot from UEFI is to create a GPT target disk, use dism.exe /Apply-Image to the relevant Windows target partition, apply the bootloader with bcdboot and at ist boot you can have a local account at the "Home School or Work". Choose School or work and then for login options choos use a domain.

Works every time. Just create a standard ISO with whatever means you want - rufus if necessary, or get one from Ms, boot that -- choose repair system-->command mode to format / initilaize your target partition (can be a vhdx file if you like using those) and then use the dism command -- there's examples all over the place on this Forum ---What on earth is the problem.

We know that the latest Dev is 26120.961, seems to me they are just creating confusion.
Any build above 26120 in that list is a Canary Build not DEV. They show the same list for Canary and Dev. 😵‍💫

It is a bit variable. Just tried again and it opened quickly. Compiled this post and tried again and it took 9 seconds.

I get the spinning disc which was barely captured:

I have not noticed any performance hits related to this build.
Can you try to close OneDrive to see if you notice any changes?

Winaero also has a .reg setting that improves Explorer performance.
Log in/out or restart your system if you apply this setting.

OneDrive doesn't seem to have any effect. Tried quitting OneDrive twice and it was the same overall with and without OneDrive running. First time opening after signing out and back in and the Home page opens instantly, no delay whatever. Close it, wait a while and reopen it and take up to 8 or 9 seconds. That is the same behaviour with and without OneDrive.

I'll wait and see what happens with the next build. Thanks for the other info :-) I won't just try that at this point... rabbit holes and all that...

I will just add that one consistent observation is that the Home page opens instantly after a reboot or on start up but if then closed and reopened again whether that is immediately or minutes later into a session then it is slow. That first opening of a session is fast though. Odd. I'll sit it out.

I don't have that issue here; it opens without any delay closing and reopening at any time. 🤷‍♂️

Thanks for trying it. I know its nothing in the scheme of things... just tried it now and it took about 4 seconds. It really is like its loading something but why the variability I have no idea. I'm not going to alter stuff on spec for this, I'll see what happens in later builds.
