All usersFollowing the installation of the October 2024 security update, some customers report that the OpenSSH (Open Secure Shell) service fails to start, preventing SSH connections. The service fails with no detailed logging, and manual intervention is required to run the sshd.exe process.

This issue is affecting both enterprise, IOT, and education customers, with a limited number of devices impacted. Microsoft is investigating whether consumer customers using Home or Pro editions of Windows are affected. 		Customers can temporarily resolve the issue by updating permissions (ACLs) on the affected directories. Follow these steps:
  1. Open PowerShell as an Administrator.
  2. Update the permissions for C:\ProgramData\ssh and C:\ProgramData\ssh\logs to allow full control for SYSTEM and the Administrators group, while allowing read access for Authenticated Users. You can restrict read access to specific users or groups by modifying the permissions string if needed.

    Use the following commands to update the permissions:
    $directoryPath = "C:\ProgramData\ssh" $acl = Get-Acl -Path $directoryPath $sddlString = "O:BAD:PAI(A;OICI;FA;;;SY)(A;OICI;FA;;;BA)(A;OICI;0x1200a9;;;AU)" $securityDescriptor = New-Object System.Security.AccessControl.RawSecurityDescriptor $sddlString $acl.SetSecurityDescriptorSddlForm($securityDescriptor.GetSddlForm("All")) Set-Acl -Path $directoryPath -AclObject $acl

Microsoft is actively investigating the issue and will provide a resolution in an upcoming Windows update. Further communications will be provided when a resolution or additional workarounds are available.

Install this update
Method 1: Install all MSU files together
Download all MSU files for KB5044384 from Microsoft Update Catalog and place them in the same folder (for example, C:/Packages). Use Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM.exe) to install the target update. DISM will use the folder specified in PackagePath to discover and install one or more prerequisite MSU files as needed.

If you want to remove the LCU

To remove the LCU after installing the combined SSU and LCU package, use the DISM/Remove-Package command line option with the LCU package name as the argument. You can find the package name by using this command: DISM /online /get-packages.

Running Windows Update Standalone Installer (wusa.exe) with the /uninstall switch on the combined package will not work because the combined package contains the SSU. You cannot remove the SSU from the system after installation.

So did I. I toggled off (or on depending on the current setting) get latest updates as they are available. Rebooted, tried again. Weird fix I thought but seemed to have done the trick

"get latest updates as they are available" That setting in not enabled. Run sfc, dism.. No avail. Installed fresh copy of Windows 11 to new pc build just a couple weeks ago. No problems with Windows until this update.

So, it turns out that my response saying that I didn't see the bug regarding the "..." in file explorer was incorrect. I had accidentally installed build 2152, not 2161. So, I reinstalled again over night, this time REALLY installing 2161 clean. Sure enough, the problem is there right from the start.

Not pleased, that's a pretty major thing to slip through testing.

Is 24H2 worth it,for me NO. There is nothing of interest in this version. With all the problems about 24H2, when MS can't output an update without bugs, why bother. By the end of life for 23H2 , 24H2 might usable, one can only hope. MS total c**p

Every update since the dawn of Fred Flintstone's time has some teething issues. That applies to every major software vendor as well.

Despite all the posts here not one of the bugs is a real showstopper once installed. All major apps work fine AND that is the most important fact.

Yeah! This is crazy! It really disappointed me. A lot! So far the programs and games are working; I'll leave it like that and wait. Are the ISOs downloaded from uupdump really reliable, right?

The problem with uupdump ISO is that they are not created by uupdump, they are created locally, so when the local Windows is damaged, like DISM, ISO will be damaged, it took me a few months to realize, yet people ignore it, though many people reported it.

So Mr flintstone , you seem to be of the opinion that what MS is putting out is nothing more than a glitch. It's a glitch that needs sorting. Why output 24H2 when it's just not ready.

People advise against 3rd party ISOs, I would rather use 3rd party ISO than ISO created by uupdump on my own PC.

I use UUPDump to create a standby .ISO and Bootable USB. However, I ALWAYS update from the MS Updates delivered by Windows Update.

Even so, Windows 24H2 updates from MS have been very 'buggy' since it was released.

Here’s the thing though, the bugs you and others may be facing aren’t affecting every user. I’ve never seen any of these bugs.

I run this and it was successful. I am on 24H2 26100.2161. I don't have any of the bugs that other people are having. I think it is because of some of the software that they have installed. It is strange that not all are experiencing the same problems.

I got that on 4 out of 5 machines with Build 26100.2161.
To get rid of the problem, I had to use the suggested command from post #32, after booting from an installation USB.
After that I could run the Dism command online without getting the error. 😉🤷‍♂️
