IMPORTANT Because of minimal operations during the Western holidays and the upcoming new year, there won’t be a non-security preview release for the month of December 2024. There will be a monthly security release for December 2024. Normal monthly servicing for both security and non-security preview releases will resume in January 2025.

Highlights​

  • This update addresses security issues for your Windows operating system.

Improvements​

This security update includes improvements that were a part of update KB5044384 (released October 24, 2024). Below is a summary of the key issues that this update addresses when you install this KB. If there are new features, it lists them as well. The bold text within the brackets indicates the item or area of the change we are documenting.
  • [Task Manager (known issue)] Fixed: The count for the number of groups is wrong or always zero (0) on the Processes tab. This occurs when you turn on “Group by type.”
  • [Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL)] Fixed: You cannot access your Dev Drive.
  • [Internet connection] Fixed: A small number of devices cannot connect to the internet. This occurs when a DHCP server response has duplicate DHCP options. This stops IPv4 connections on certain networks.
If you installed earlier updates, only the new updates contained in this package will be downloaded and installed on your device.

Windows 11 servicing stack update (KB5047621)- 26100.2303​

This update makes quality improvements to the servicing stack, which is the component that installs Windows updates. Servicing stack updates (SSU) ensure that you have a robust and reliable servicing stack so that your devices can receive and install Microsoft updates.

Install this update

Method 1: Install all MSU files together
Download all MSU files for KB5046617 from Microsoft Update Catalog and place them in the same folder (for example, C:/Packages). Use Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM.exe) to install the target update. DISM will use the folder specified in PackagePath to discover and install one or more prerequisite MSU files as needed.

Updating Windows PC
To apply this update to a running Windows PC, run the following command from an elevated Command Prompt:

DISM /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:c:\packages\Windows11.0-KB5046617-x64.msu

Or, run the following command from an elevated Windows PowerShell prompt:

Method 2: Install each MSU file individually, in order
Download and install each MSU file individually either using DISM or Windows Update Standalone Installer in the following order:
  1. windows11.0-kb5043080-x64_953449672073f8fb99badb4cc6d5d7849b9c83e8.msu
  2. windows11.0-kb5046617-x64_1e5d7b716c0747592ae80c218f1d81bbb7b0c7ab.msu

If you want to remove the LCU

To remove the LCU after installing the combined SSU and LCU package, use the DISM/Remove-Package command line option with the LCU package name as the argument. You can find the package name by using this command: DISM /online /get-packages.

Running Windows Update Standalone Installer (wusa.exe) with the /uninstall switch on the combined package will not work because the combined package contains the SSU. You cannot remove the SSU from the system after installation.

The 3-dot bug may be "related" to an installed "Feature".
But bugs aren't "Installed". They are... collateral damage.

Stating the obvious again. 🤣🤣
The collateral damage was added after 26100.1742.

The added feature was supposed to be a fix as shown by the name of the feature ID, but clearly that added a different bug (Or collateral damage as you like to call it). 😂😵‍💫

Well you can always use vivetool to fix the bug... and every now and then, run the command as "enable" instead of "disable", and see if the bug comes back or not.

If it doesn't come back... then MS has fixed it.

When you reboot into recovery mode and select command prompt, it starts as an elevated command prompt or admin mode.

I ran vivetool to fix the 3 dots menu, I notice that have taken aways its most useful feature to do a clean up. Have had to add a shortcut to start menu as going via Storage menus is pita.

Why does Ms seem on making Windows 11 as "User unfriendly" as possible or even deliberately "User Aggressive"-- Just give us back the nice simple XP type of GUI -- it worked, reasonably customiseable,network browsing worked, file sharing worked and OK security was a joke in those days - but at least you could switch on your computer and rely on everything working. W10 BTW of later Windows releases actually has a better GUI (IMHO).

W11 is evolving into a real dogs (sorry dogs that's being too unkind to you all) dinner of a mess with even the same builds not pushing out the same functions to users !!! so how in the world can they fix things if 97,000 different users or so report different problems on identical hardware.

I've heard of job creation methods -- this is though totally bonkers.

In most jurisdictions the public sector usually has zillions of "non productive jobs" just to keep unemployment down -- I think Ms is now copying this model with a vengeance !!!.

If you have any trouble with regular Cumulative updates after upgrading to 24H2, you can do the following...
Credit to @boombastik for figuring this out.

1) In Windows Update, disable the option: Get the latest updates as soon as they're available.
2) Restart the computer.
3) Search for updates.
4) This should allow the Cumulative updates to install without errors.
5) If you still have update errors after this... you have something else causing the problem.

What I find humorous is that of my three machines the non-compatible has had the least trouble with Windows Updates since installing 24 H2 on all three. Good old 6700k silicon.

My PC at home has the issue fixed out of thin air. I have recreated the recovery partition, I don't know if that will have something to do. I am right now trying to solve the issue on one remaining pc.

SOLVED. Using dism seems to have done the trick.

Updated my new Asus laptop (see system 2 under My Computer below).
It had Windows 23H2 on it. I completed a system image backup with Aomei Backupper Pro before starting the upgrade process.

Downloaded the Windows 11 Installation Assistant and it installed 24H2 26100.1742 in an hour. When finished I fired up Windows Update and it installed 26100.2314. Ran Windows Store to pick up any other updates.

No 24H2 failure, fiasco or flop here, just a fulsome experience and an easy Windows 11 24H2 upgrade.
