Solved KB5050009 problem installing.

I have an Asus Prime Z490-V motherboard, Intel Core i7 10700K, BIOS up to date at 1621, setup. End of last year I was not able to upgrade to 26100.2605 due to Asus and MS having some problems that meant some Asus m/bs could not be upgraded. This appeared to be resolved, a newer KB was offered to me and upgraded the system to 26100.2605 without problem.

However, KB5050009 is back to my previous problem. The upgrade installs but, on the restart to add the upgrade, the process stalls at 36% and gives a "Something went wrong". The program then backs off and puts me back to my last install. I guess I will have to wait until ASUS and MS sort this little lot out, again!

I'm having problems, too. It fails on a WU install and on the MSU from the Microsoft Update Catalog. I'm just now trying a UUPdump.net constructed image as an in-place upgrade repair (it's got the KB slipstreamed into it already). It's at 89% complete for the GUI phase of the install. This one takes a long, long time to do its thing for both download and install. Something interesting is going on here...

KB5050009 worked on most of my Windows 11 plain-vanilla PCs (production version). But I've got a new ThinkCentre M90a Gen 5 I'm in the process of handling intake for, prior to a first impressions review, and this is really slowing me down. Lost pretty much a full day troubleshooting so far. Good thing I can (sort of) multitask while working on this, with one PC next to the problem machine I can work on (writing this post, for example) while the M90a grinds away to my left...

Note added 30 mins later: the UUPdump in-place upgrade repair did the trick. The problem PC is now upgraded to 26100.2894. Took about 1.5 hours to build the ISO, and another 40 minutes to do the in-place upgrade repair install. But it got the M90a over the hump so I can write my review. Boo-yah!

According to Microsoft, users with "certain Citrix components" might have a problem completing the installation process of the January 2025 Windows security updates. In particular, the bug affects PCs with Citrix Session Recording Agent version 2411, which was released last month. Here is what will happen if your system is on the list of affected devices:

Affected devices might initially download and apply the January 2025 Windows security update correctly, such as via the Windows Update page in Settings. However, when restarting the device to complete the update installation, an error message with text similar to “Something didn’t go as planned. No need to worry – undoing changes” appears. The device will then revert to the Windows updates previously present on the device.

Thanks for the tip but I have checked services.msc for Citrix Session Recording Agent but it doesn't appear.

Hi guys. I am having trouble installing KB5050009 as well. I tried to download/install through W11 Windows update. It downloads fine, but fails to install (Install error - 0x800f081f). I was going to run the Windows Update Troubleshooter, but that would reinstall the OS, but keep Apps and files. I recently did an OS reinstall, so I don't really want to go through that again. Is there a way to download/install manually? I heard of something about going through the Microsoft Update Catalog? Where can I find that, and is the install process easy? Help appreciated :)

I have been having the exact problem, with the "Something went wrong......." at 36/37% since I upgraded to 24H2 when it was released. That is at every patch Tuesday, without fail.
The only way I have found to make the update, is through Settings - Windows Update - Advanced Options - Recovery - Fix problems using Windows Update - Reinstall now. This is basically a Repair Install but with the latest Windows Update included. It has worked flawlessly every month, so far. It is a bit of a pain, with one hour (in Windows) for the download and Install, and then around 25 minutes for the reboot install.

I have reported this to Microsoft, but they do not seem interested.

This is an interesting one but not fun for you.
The full installation works but the CU fails; probably missing core files or a hash failure.
I am sure MS knows with all the telemetry they get but it takes a long time to acknowledge
the issue and then takes even longer to correct it.

Hi guys. Update from Microsoft update catalog failed to install also (KB5050009). I did an sfc /scannow in admin command prompt, found no errors. In Windows Update, it downloads fine, and starts install. Gets to about 80% and then fails to install (Install error - 0x800f081f).

Not sure what else to do or try... Help appreciated :)

An in-place repair install does the trick. I visited UUPdump.net to grab the script for build 26100.2894, build the ISO, then mount it, and run setup.exe from its root directory. Takes awhile -- 90 to 100 minutes on my test PCs -- but does the trick!

If you have Windows Sandbox installed, but do not have VM active in your BIOS, then the updates might fail. Advice is to remove Sandbox and try again.
