This month's video is ready for you at Windows 11, version 24H2. Be sure to follow @WindowsUpdate to find out when new content is published to the Windows release health dashboard.

Important: Windows updates don't install Microsoft Store application updates. If you are an enterprise user, see Microsoft Store apps - Configuration Manager. If you are a consumer user, see Get updates for apps and games in Microsoft Store.

Highlights

  • This update addresses security issues for your Windows operating system.

Improvements

Windows 11, version 23H2

Important: Use EKB KB5027397 to update to Windows 11, version 23H2.

This security update includes quality improvements. Key changes include:
  • This build includes all the improvements in Windows 11, version 22H2.
  • No additional issues are documented for this release.

Windows 11, version 22H2

This security update includes improvements that were part of update KB5055629 (released April 22, 2025). The following summary outlines key issues addressed by the KB after you install it. Also, included are available new features. The bold text within the brackets indicates the item or area of the change.
  • [Secure Boot Advanced Targeting (SBAT) and Linux Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI)] This update applies improvements to SBAT for the detection of Linux systems.
  • [Windows Update] Fixed: This update addresses an issue where you might be unable to update to Windows 11, version 24H2 via WSUS. The download might not start or complete, showing error code 0x80240069 and logs with "Service has unexpectedly stopped".
If you installed earlier updates, your device downloads and installs only the new updates contained in this package.

For more information about security vulnerabilities, see the Security Update Guide and the May 2025 Security Update.

Windows 11 servicing stack update (KB5058528) - 22621.5334 and 22631.5334

This update makes quality improvements to the servicing stack, which is the component that installs Windows updates. Servicing stack updates (SSU) ensure that you have a robust and reliable servicing stack so that your devices can receive and install Microsoft updates. To learn more about SSUs, see Simplifying on-premises deployment of servicing stack updates.

Known issues in this update

1 Noto fonts issue

Applies to: All users

Symptom

There are reports of blurry or unclear CJK (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) text when displayed at 96 DPI (100% scaling) in Chromium-based browsers such as Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome. The March 2025 Preview Update introduced Noto fonts in collaboration with Google, for CJK languages as fallbacks to improve text rendering when websites or apps don’t specify appropriate fonts. The issue is due to limited pixel density at 96 DPI, which can reduce the clarity and alignment of CJK characters. Increasing the display scaling improves clarity by enhancing text rendering.

Workaround

As a temporary workaround, increase your display scaling to 125% or 150% to improve text clarity. For more information, see Change your screen resolution and layout in Windows.

We are investigating this issue and will provide more information when it is available.

2 Recovery error with error code 0x0000098

Applies to: All users

Symptom

Following the installation of the May 2025 Windows security update, some customers report that the update was not able to install on some Windows 11, version 22H2 and 23H2 devices. Affected devices might encounter the following recovery error:

Your PC/device needs to be repaired.
The operating system couldn't be loaded because a required file is missing or contains errors.
File: ACPI.sys
Error code: 0xc0000098

This issue has been observed on a small number of physical devices, but primarily on devices running in virtual environments, including:
  • Azure Virtual Machines
  • Azure Virtual Desktop
  • On-premises virtual machines hosted on Citrix or Hyper-V
Home users of Windows using Home or Pro editions are unlikely to face this issue as virtual machines are mostly used in IT environments.

The ACPI.sys file (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) is a critical system driver responsible for managing hardware resources and power states.

Note: There are also reports of this same error occurring with a different file name.

Workaround

We're investigating this issue and will provide more information when it is available.

How to get this update

Before you install this update

Microsoft combines the latest servicing stack update (SSU) for your operating system with the latest cumulative update (LCU). For general information about SSUs, see Servicing stack updates and Servicing Stack Updates (SSU): Frequently Asked Questions.

Install this update

To install this update, use one of the following Windows and Microsoft release channels.

AvailableNext Step
Included
This update downloads and installs automatically from Windows Update and Microsoft Update.
Included
To get the standalone package for this update, go to Microsoft Update Catalog.
1 This latest cumulative update includes update for AI components. Even though the AI component updates are included in the update, the AI components are only applicable to Windows Copilot+ PCs and will not install on Windows PC or Windows Server.

If you want to remove the LCU

To remove the LCU after installing the combined SSU and LCU package, use the DISM/Remove-Package command line option with the LCU package name as the argument. You can find the package name by using this command: DISM /online /get-packages.

Running Windows Update Standalone Installer (wusa.exe) with the /uninstall switch on the combined package will not work because the combined package contains the SSU. You cannot remove the SSU from the system after installation.

File information

For a list of the files that are provided in this update, download the file information for cumulative update 5058405.

For a list of the files that are provided in the servicing stack update, download the file information for the SSU (KB5058528) - versions 22621.5334 and 22631.5334.

Here it is after using DISM with restorehealth parameter, multiple reboots and then reinstalling patch-Tuesday: This wasn't smooth, unlike the April patch-Tuesday! :ffs:

Issues with this update:

You may receive an AppReadiness error with the following error:

Code:
The Appx operation 'RegisterPackageAsync' on 'MicrosoftWindows.Client.CBS_1000.22700.1077.0_x64__cw5n1h2txyewy' failed for user 'S-1-5-21-3407992842-357079822-2026718286-1001' - Deployment Register operation with target volume C: on Package MicrosoftWindows.Client.CBS_1000.22700.1077.0_x64__cw5n1h2txyewy from: (AppxManifest.xml) failed with error 0x80070490. See http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=235160 for help diagnosing app deployment issues.. (Error: Install failed. Please contact your software vendor.)

Where Windows Update should have halted, there were multiple 0x80070490 error codes!

The update needs to be uninstalled and reinstalled, after using DISM with restorehealth option, if you receive AppReadiness errors for packages with that error code!

Did you check the event log for any errors resembling what I got? You most likely have to do the long steps above with 23H2. The odds of update failure, OTOH, are likely lower with 24H2.

In my case, it wasn't just "the Bluetooth file bug".

What I found:

For AppReadiness errors in Windows, follow these steps:

1. Open Event Viewer:
- Press `Win + X` and select “Event Viewer”.
- Or, press `Win + R`, type `eventvwr.msc`, and hit “Enter”.

2. Navigate to the AppReadiness logs:
- In Event Viewer, expand “Windows Logs” on the left panel.
- Click “Application”.
- In the middle panel, look for entries related to “AppReadiness”. These are usually labeled under the “Source” column.

3. Apply filters to find errors quickly:
- In the right panel, click “Filter Current Log”.
- Under “Event Level”, check “Error” and “Warning”.
- In the “Event sources” dropdown, look for “AppReadiness” and select it.
- Click “OK” to apply the filter.

4. Review details:
- Double-click any error or warning event to view its details.
- The “General” and “Details” tabs will provide more insights about the issue.

Where did you get this error, in the event viewer? Never mind, @antspants showed in great detail how to see that error ;-)

I'm no expert, but it looks like the error was caused by a permissions issue, doesn't it?

I have installed this update on a virtual machine without problems. But I will wait a bit on the main computer.

It went OK with my 24H2 installation on my A320 build.
But it's not for 24H2, perhaps you're thinking about another update and posted in the wrong thread?

Yeah, it seems to be fine on 24H2, on my other PC. I suspect it's 23H2 with the bug.

This CU sounds like a hard pass for now given I've not seen this many problem reports for ages!
Glad I've still got WUMT to do this and avoid the headaches you're all having

It got invariably installed on my afresh PC straight from greenfield HP Recovery state and past upgrade to 22H2 and migration to 23H2 on its way, and on the same day - as it's all been happening in a jiffy.

Nothing to report really (early days - or hours even), no problems and side-efffects seen. Nonetheless I expect to be bumped to 24H2 shortly...

(and by the way: welcome all!)

After waiting for a week, I finally decided to install this update. Luckily I have not had any problems. The update was installed on the first try and without errors, not even the one you mentioned about AppReadiness. The only error reported during sfc /scannow was the usual two Bluetooth files.

I have to say that I have not modified or altered my system in any way. The only thing I have modified in the group policies is to avoid the automatic update of the drivers and to stay on version 23H2 with the InControl program. Also, I usually reboot the computer before checking for and installing an update so that there are no resident programs that could alter it.

A curious thing about my Windows is that updates are never installed in the background. Until I go into Windows Update and click on check for updates, nothing is installed. I believe that during Windows installation I chose some option that causes this behavior. I can't quite remember, but I think when asked for the type of installation, I chose Work/School.

In my case, IIRC, CBS also reported metadata corruption!
