Hello Windows Insiders, today we are releasing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26220.7752 (KB5074177) to the Beta Channel.

Changes in Beta Channel builds and updates are documented in two buckets: new features, improvements, and fixes that are being gradually rolled out for Insiders who have turned on the toggle to get the latest updates as they are available (via Settings > Windows Update*) and then new features, improvements, and fixes rolling out to everyone in the Beta Channel. Built-in Sysmon is disabled by default and must be explicitly enabled.
  1. Go to Settings > System > Optional features > More Windows features > checking Sysmon or in PowerShell or command prompt:

    Dism /Online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:Sysmon
  2. To complete the installation, from PowerShell or command prompt run:

    Sysmon -i
Note: If you’ve already installed Sysmon from the website, it must be uninstalled before enabling the built-in Sysmon.

  • Support for the Netherlands locale has been added.

Fixes gradually being rolled out with toggle on*​

[File Explorer]​

  • We fixed a few issues in File Explorer, including accessibility improvements (keyboard navigation and access keys), folder renaming with custom names, and missing icons/tooltips for “Add to favorites”.

[Other]​

  • We fixed an issue that caused apps to freeze when working with files on OneDrive or Dropbox. Some Outlook setups with PSTs on OneDrive could also hang or reload email data.

Reminders for Windows Insiders in the Beta Channel​

  • Updates are based on Windows 11, version 25H2 via an enablement package (Build 26220.7752).
  • Many features are rolled out using Controlled Feature Rollout technology, starting with a subset of Insiders and ramping up over time as we monitor feedback to see how they land before pushing them out to everyone in this channel.
  • For Windows Insiders who want to be the first to get features gradually rolled out to you, you can turn ON the toggle to get the latest updates as they are available via Settings > Windows Update*. Over time, we will increase the rollouts of features to everyone with the toggle turned on. Should you keep this toggle off, new features will gradually be rolled out to your PC over time once they are ready.
  • Features and experiences included in these builds may never get released as we try out different concepts and get feedback. Features may change over time, be removed, or replaced and never get released beyond Windows Insiders. Some of these features and experiences could show up in future Windows releases when they’re ready.
  • Some features in active development we preview with Windows Insiders may not be fully localized and localization will happen over time as features are finalized. As you see issues with localization in your language, please report those issues to us via Feedback Hub.

Trying to use WinKey+Shift+S to take a screenshot results in 'Select an app to open this 'ms-screenclip link'. Select Snipping Tool and it will work, but even if you click the Always button it still comes up every time. I see this on 2 out of my 3 machines, this one is a Hyper-V VM on a fully supported Host.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven below to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro.

As in several recent updates, my default apps were all wiped and reset.

And, for the life of me, it will not let me change my default browser. No matter what I do, it insists on using Edge to open links, PDFs, webps, etc. etc. etc. (If I go at it through Control Panel=>App, Control Panel=>File Type, launch the program and "This is not your default browser [Set]", nothing...)

If you got this through Windows Update as a cumulative update then there's no Windows .old. To go back try uninstalling KB5074177.

Brilliant. I thought "windows.old" was the canary-in-the-coalmine for rollbacks.

Before I do this, how do I know that it's ..4177 ad not ..4828 that gets uninstalled?

(At first I was like, what's she doing with updates from April hahahahahahaha. Yes I'm a filthy Yank).

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.
OK, did the rollback and now I'm on Version 25H2 (0S Build 26220.7670)... and somehow everything is worse.
  • Browser still defaults to Edge (and is unchangeable)
  • Desktop icons now blink all the time
  • My Firefox toolbar icon has been removed

Have you considered doing a repair install?

One of the advantages of running Insider builds in a Hyper-V VM is that you can set checkpoints and easily switch back and forth. I had the same problems after uninstalling the KB5074177 update. Going back to the checkpoint for 26220.7653, that build doesn't have these issues.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven below to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

Mostly just time. If you have slow internet... more time. As always, make sure you back up any important files in case it goes sideways. I've had to perform several recently... mostly due to my own experimentation and they've all completed successfully and resolved the issue(s) I was having. As my system isn't supported because of a lack of TPM, I have to run a bypass script prior to starting the repair install.

This current install is a migration from Windows 10 installed back in May of 2022.

Downloading the repair ISO from UUP Dump now.

Another fun "feature" of this update, I noticed earlier, is that Explorer doesn't update. When I delete a file, the icon remains (or when I add a new folder, or extract a folder, they don't appear). Until I hit F5, then, viola, there you go.

Hey there, I made an account just to jump into the discussion. I have the exact same problem as you: default apps screwed up (especially Firefox), flashing icons, unsuccessful rollbacks and re-installs. I've narrowed something down: take a look at task manager and CPU usage of explorer.exe and service host: state repository service. it appears something is wrong with these files (and their extension variations in C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\AppRepository\

StateRepository-Machine.*
StateRepository-Deployment.*


Window event viewer also shows a lot of errors related to default apps. "System" is continually writing ~2k events to this log every few seconds:

C:\Windows\System32\winevt\Logs\Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Core%4AppDefaults.evtx

A few examples:

I only know all this from googling about every step of the way. I've rolled back to a system restore point, uninstalled a .NET preview I that windows updated, a few registry default app deletions for browsers, and nothing has worked.

Currently, I am moving my documents out of C: to wipe and restore to vanilla.

Have you made any progress?
