refuses to install on my up to date laptop. on my PC I am on 25H2 (OS build 26200.8039) and have not yet had an update arrive.
Error code: 0x800f0991

Use Windows Update Troubleshooter.

Right-click on Start button and pick Settings
Go to System > Troubleshoot
Click on Other Troubleshooters > Windows Update and click Run button.

Download Windows updates manually.

Go to the official Microsoft update catalog;
Enter a specific update code, for example, KB4481031
Select the correct version and click Download
Click on the link and Windows will update your computer

Thanks Free, it did not work, I get as far as download, then click on the link and it says not for this pc (lptop in that case) so I ran it on my pc, same result.

usually indicates corrupted system files, missing update components, or network issues preventing installation

Have you tried running sfc /scannow on the laptop yet?

I am a bit confused by your post. Isn't KB5085516 OS build 26200.8039 which you said your systems is already running?

His PC has .8309
But his laptop is having problems with the .8309 update.

I tried it on the pc, after the laptop update failed. Same result. My laptop is build 26100.ge_release.240331 - 1445.

Ghot> tried scannow in pc whilst still waiting for win update to finalise or fail. Curruptions found/fixed. Still waiting to run scannow on laptop. edit: Currentlky 45%

I am having to reinstall repair Win 11. I dont know what changed the upgrade made but it suddenly included three finger salute to sign in, and other anomolies so after about 5 hours of seraching all avenues, I've decided to give up and do this. Thanks to BRink for the tutorial, greatly appreciated. :crossed

I installed Win Repair, no difference. I have bitten the bullet and told laptop to do complete new install from Cloud.

Laptop is now fully functional again. Its seems to have given me 26100.ge_release.240331-1435. eg: is that the latest??
