Windows Secure Boot certificate expiration
Important: Secure Boot certificates used by most Windows devices expire starting in June 2026. Microsoft has been updating these certificates on consumer and non-managed business devices over the past several months. Devices that haven’t received the newer certificates will continue to start and operate normally, and standard Windows updates will continue to install. Updated certificates will continue to be delivered through Windows Update in the coming months. For more information, see Windows Secure Boot certificate expiration and CA updates.

End of updates
Windows 11, version 24H2 Home and Pro editions will reach end of updates on October 13, 2026. Devices running these editions will no longer receive fixes for known issues, time zone updates, technical support, or monthly security and preview updates containing protections from the latest security threats. Enterprise and Education editions remain supported until October 12, 2027.

To stay protected and up to date, we recommend you upgrade to the latest version of Windows 11.

Secure Boot​

  • This update includes additional high confidence device targeting data, increasing coverage of devices eligible to automatically receive new Secure Boot certificates. Certificate deployment via Windows updates continues across supported PCs and non-managed business devices in the coming months.

App​

  • This update improves the stability of Office applications used in virtualized environments. Users should experience a more reliable experience when working with and closing Office apps.

File Explorer​

  • This update addresses an issue where files stored on a DFS mapped drive could be incorrectly treated as originating from the Internet after the device started while disconnected from the network and later reconnected. This could cause File Explorer’s Preview Pane to display the message, “The file you are attempting to preview could harm your computer,” or cause files copied from the DFS drive to receive an unexpected Mark of the Web.

Mobile device management (MDM)​

  • This update addresses an issue affecting newly provisioned or newly recovered Windows devices running versions of Windows released on or after July 14, 2026 (KB5101650). After enrollment in a mobile device management (MDM) service such as Microsoft Intune, affected devices could remain in an incorrect noncompliant state and be unable to access corporate resources.

Storage​

  • This update fixes an issue that affects File History automatic backups to network shares using Server Message Block (SMB). Backups did not work because Windows showed a false “invalid credentials” error when connecting to SMB shares.
If you installed earlier updates, your device downloads and installs only the new updates contained in this package.

How to get this update​

Before you install this update

Microsoft combines the latest servicing stack update (SSU) for your operating system with the latest cumulative update (LCU). For general information about SSUs, see Servicing stack updates.

Deployment​

If you deploy dynamic updates such as this update to an existing Windows image, ensure the boot.stl file is included as part of the installation media. Failure to include the file might prevent devices from successfully starting from the installation media and can result in error code 0xc0430001.

Note
The boot.stl file is used during Secure Boot validation and must match the Windows version and architecture of the image you are updating.

To ensure the boot.stl file is included as part of the installation media, do one of the following:
  • Use the Update WinPE script to update an existing Windows image. (Recommended)
  • Manually copy the boot.stl file from the device Windows\Boot\EFI folder to the corresponding folder on your installation media before deploying the update.

Other than losing the dark theme in the run dialog and file explorer dialogs and not being able to get them back using vivetool. everything else seems fine. Apparently, the ids in vivetool to get the dark mode in their dialogs don't work anymore.

Tried 3 times installing this update now by using Macrium Reflect to go back to the previous saved copy. The last time I ran sfc and all Dism before updating and they came back clean. Once I updated KB5101684 via Windows Update I ran the checks again but got the error message with Dism (see attachments). sfc was fine.

I had the same experience exactly. sfc fine. scanhealth finds repairable component store. restorehealth fails.

When I got that DISM restorehealth error 0x800f0915 on a previous beta build for one machine (the 2nd machine was fine with the same build) the only way I could fix it short of waiting for the next new build was doing an ISO repair install. That's a PITA though just to fix that error. I don't know why it keeps randomly popping up on later builds for different people.

Yeah not sure about the prior operation, very possibly, Hemi. I've run PnPClean a thousand times, never been asked to reboot. In fact I am not sure if it's worth being in my batch.

Since Windows 11 I've learned the following...

1. Never run any of the "Health" commands. They just break things.
2. After a Windows Update, do one of the following..

a. Open Terminal (Admin) PS and run: sfc /scannow and Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup

b. Open Terminal (Admin) PS and run: sfc /scannow and...
Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase if you have the Disk Cleanup 190MB bug.

3. For any other Windows issues do an In-Place Upgrade (Option Two, ISO method)

As far as I can remember, which sometimes is only yesterday, I have never had an issue using RestoreHealth.
From the experience of several members here, running the DISM RestBase command can break Windows updates.

No.

The ResetBase command prevents you from uninstalling some updates.
But a full backup made before doing the Windows Update can remove the update as well.

A lot of people got the wrong idea about the ResetBase command after this thread...

Removing the last TWO reclaimable packages, DID break some folks Windows Update.
I know, because I was one of the ones it happened to.

So I restored from a backup, and left those TWO reclaimable packages alone. :-)


Ever since the Disk Cleanup 190MB bug, I've been running the ResetBase command after every Windows Update.
Hasn't broken anything, but it does fix the Disk Cleanup bug.

For example... I ran the ResetBase command after the following update, and the one before... etc., etc.

I never did either till this past month. The 0x800f0915 DISM error seems to be a new bug randomly hitting certain PC's and users with recent builds. I don't do resetbase and don't delete the two Un-reclaimable packages from the component store or anything else to prompt that DISM error but it hit one of my machines none the less on one beta build. So far so good on this and all the other builds.

I'm not sure how your non standard method is going to stop others from having a potential issue with Windows Updates from running the ResetBase command.
