KB5129195 update overnight (9/16/2026) and top apps missing from search menu

This morning, on two computers that had KB5129195 done overnight, my search menu is messed up, now looking like:

I'm not saying that the update caused it, but for all my time on Windows 11, including yesterday before the update, the menu, in addition to having a list of recent apps down the left side, had (I think) six pinned "top app" icons, that were very handy go-tos, versus having those apps pinned to the taskbar.

What happened? How can I fix the start menu so it shows the top apps?

That does not appear to me to be the native start menu. If you are using any 3rd party app that alters the GUI, I suggest uninstalling it and then restart see if the issue is fixed.

This is the new and current search menu layout as they streamlined it and removed ads and web content. Screenshot 2026-09-17 095304 (Medium).webpNot sure if it's possible to revert back to the old style or not.

I am not aware of any 3rd-party app altering my GUI. To make clear, the image I posted, I pixelated the list of apps and my profile picture. Below is an image grabbed online, but my search menu used to look like it, with a list of recent apps on the left, six icons for "top apps" prominently displayed, and other settings options.

Yesterday that's how it looked, and the only thing I can find that changed overnight is that KB5129195 was installed.
