Something caused my keyboard to malfunction upon startup the day before yesterday and today. The day before yesterday I searched around for a solution and was directed to turn my computer off and during restart to press esc plus F2. I followed those directions and the keyboard started working. I followed the same procedure this morning (now yesterday morning) because I was experiencing the same issue. The keyboard would not function. Obviously, that worked again. Can anyone tell me what is going on. Should I expect to have to replace my keyboard soon or what should I do. The wireless keyboard is HP and came with the HP computer which is a HP Envy TE01-1xxx. Using Windows version 25H2 (OS Build 26200.6899). I would include more system info if I could retrieve it and get it to my clipboard. That's another question, I haven't been able to display my clipboard. Anyone willing to help an old man through some of this?

Thanks 1010 for that suggestion. I do have another keyboard, a 'MS Wireless Comfort Keyboard 5050' that I may try. Not sure how to do that. The MS keyboard has a 2.4 GHz Transceiver v7.0 that plugs into the computer. I don't remember how old that keyboard is but it seems outdated. Any comments?

Plug in the transceiver to a usb port on the computer and turn the keyboard on, see if it works.

please try opening the device manager
find the keyboard entry and then right click that entry and then click remove.

close the device manager and then restart the system
Windows will find and reload the required drivers for that keyboard
then see if there is any improvement for that keyboard.

best of luck Steve ..

Thanks Steve! That seems to have done the trick. Startup included 'updates' and I didn't have to restart and use esc & F2. That's a load off my mind. Any idea what made this happen?
Thanks again.

Thanks again.

most likely the keyboard drivers were not loaded/working correctly
the same seems to happen to a mouse connected by USB dongle.

but sometimes that is the magical mystery tour called Windows.
glad you have got it sorted. as stated above a SFC /Scannow may also help.
best of luck Steve ..

Thanks to everyone who offered solutions to the keyboard problem (having to restart using esc plus F2 key). Still not solved. I'm so dense I have not been able to change my access to 'administrator' so I can use sfc /scannow. Will someone please provide in the simplest way possible how to get administrator privileges. And what icon am I looking for and how do I find it?

Hi wear08,

Are you the only user on your machine? If so, you are the administrator. You can confirm that by checking your account in Settings>Accounts>Your Info. Look for Administrator under You User name and account type (local or signed in). See below circled in red:

Kind regards,

Thanks tecknot! I see what you are showing on your example on on my screen as well; Settings>Accounts>Your Info. Still no cigar. The message that comes up is "you must be an administrator running a console session in order to use the sfc utility." So the saga continues. Have you any other suggestions? Is there something else I need to do to activate 'Administrator'?

Hi wear08,

Well, you can try to use the "Built-in Administrator". Simply open the Command Prompt with a right mouse click and choose "run as administrator" . In the Command Prompt paste in the following command: net user Administrator /active:yes

You can find the tutorial here: Enable or Disable Built-in Administrator Account in Windows 11

Once you are done, close all open programs, sign out and then switch users. Click on the Administrator in the lower left of the sign-on screen. (Sorry, I can't take a screen shot.) You are now in the Administrator user. Now try the fix.

Kind regards,

tecknot

open the task manager right click start > on that menu 'task manager'

at the top of task manager is 'run new task' click that
in the run bar write
cmd.exe

and make sure you have ticked/marked 'run this task as Administrator'
press enter

the command prompt will now open in Admin mode
you can do the same for powershell.exe
best of luck Steve ..
