I'm trying to format this drive and no matter what I do it won't permit me to format it.
It's one of those Vault Privacy memory sticks.
It's annoying me that I can erase everything on it and just use it as a normal memory stick.
It's only 2 gb but its exactly the size I need for the job I'm doing.
Can anyone help please? Thanks.

We had a member here ask about a similar drive. I don’t think we found a tool and nothing including Disk Management, diskpart, or third-party formatters were able to overwrite the encrypted partition while locked.

Apparently Encrypted DataTravelers include management software stored in the device. You’re supposed to be able to plug it in and run the secure login app. You need to enter the password, go to the app’s menu and there should be an option like Format, Reset, or Restore Device. This wipes the secure partition and restores it to factory defaults.

I don’t know which one you have but apparently some self reformat after a consecutive number of failed password attempts, so if you’ve forgotten the password, maybe trying to trigger a reset would be an option, but I cannot tell you if it will work or if you can use the drive after the fact.

You should have been prompted to setup a password when you first used it?

My guess is you could probably find a 16GB (or less?) USB from a corner store or somewhere that sells office products etc.
I find it hard to find a USB under 32GB these days. But corner stores or appliance store etc possibly sell cheap ones at 8 or 16GB, for less than this encrypted USB issue will cost you in time spent on it.

The following is the reply I received from Kingston to day. I just have to find that hammer now and the deal is done. As some of you said there are similar memory sticks out there which are reasonably priced, so no worries. It was worth a try.

Please be kindly informed that the Kingston DataTraveler Vault Privacy (DTVP) USB drive - Discontinued - is specifically designed with built-in hardware encryption and security features to protect sensitive data. For security and compliance reasons, these drives cannot be unlocked or converted into a standard USB drive.

yes they can.
use a live Linux distro on a USB boot drive and the open disk's to completely delete the whole USB stick and reformat FAT32.
thats if you believe the time and effort is worth it as i had to do this to an encrypted USB stick several years ago.

Kingston Data Traveler serves only one purpose. It is an encrypted vault for your data.
It is like hardware. You can’t format it.

I know it is frustrating, especially if you want to use it for other purposes. Just buy an ordinary flash drive. The newer ones are really fast. If you want to store your private data on it, just use an encryption software to create a password-protected container.

This is the one I carry around with me. I get slightly slower writes then they claim, but my USB port speed is 5Gb and 10Gb as would be required for max speed. However, I get much better write speed than they claim. $28 on Amazon for the 256GB size, they go up to 1TB for $90.
