Laptop doesn't sleep/hibernate/shutdown when lid closed - Battery Damage

I have a Lenovo and don't use it much, and have found that the battery only lasts about 3 weeks even when I shut it down manually before shutting the lid. I have never tried just shutting the lid, so I'm not sure if the battery would run down at the same rate or not. Nor have I set it to shut down the screen and power after a short time unatended.

Well...issue definitely not solved...closed the lid about 30 minutes ago and peeked to see that it was still off. Instead of the black screen with mouse this time, I was greeted with a BSOD...event viewer generic and just said power error. I wonder if recent Windows update may have caused issue as I never had this issue until last week. For now I'll be manually shutting down or putting it in sleep/hibernate.

You apparently have Dell Premium Onsite Support. Dell "will" fix it.

I've tried both Sleep and Hibernate for the drop-down menu.
When you close the lid (with computer not plugged in) and the option is:
Sleep - The computer maintain its state in RAM. The computer will put in a low power state. It will eventually run down. That might be in a few days or week depending upon the size of the battery.
Hibernate - The computer will save state to hiberfile.sys file and then shut down. It will eventually run down but not for a long time.
Shut down - The computer will not save its state. It will just shut down. It will eventually run down but not for a long time.

You have to be careful about setting it to Sleep or Hibernate. One time I just closed the lid and forgot about the laptop for a few days. When I checked on the laptop the battery was totally drained.

I have my current laptop set to Sleep. That is not a problem because I use it every day. If I didn't use it every day I would set it to Shut down.

  • You might notice how pedantic I am being about the terms used. S0 Modern standby is not sleep but an idle condition. It's important for us never to use the word sleep because people think we mean S3 Sleep.
  • MS is not so pedantic. If you look at your power options you'll see [or can set it up to see] Display off after ... [S0 Modern standby starts when the display turns off] and Sleep after ... [This sends S0 Modern standby straight into a deeper idle state during which, for example, no task scheduler tasks can run]. MS also include the word Sleep in the Start menu, Power section on S0 Modern standby computers.
I've tried both Sleep and Hibernate for the drop-down menu.
Sleep - The computer maintain its state in RAM.
McNavy,

That's why I said we had to avoid use of the word sleep [even though MS use it].
MrEd has interpreted your comment as referring to S3 Sleep ["The computer maintain its state in RAM"] instead of realising that choosing that Lid close - Sleep option for an S0 Modern standby computer actually sends the computer into a later fairly-inactive idle phase of S0 Modern standby that has nothing to do with S3 Sleep.
Don't bother reading this if you value your sanity - Modern Standby states - MSDocs

Denis

I understand the difference but for sanity I am sticking with the term Sleep because that is what Windows calls it. Besides for practical purposes for short periods of time sleep acts no different than S0 Modern Standby. I don't find it useful to worry about something so trivial when there is nothing you can do about it.

I only use "Sleep" (or S0 Modern standby if you insist) for short periods of time during the day. At night I just shut down the computer.

MrEd,

Windows calls it different things in different places. I am being careful with my terminology to avoid the OP suffering, as explained in an earlier post.

If an S0 Modern standby computer is put to sleep in Power options or the Start menu, Power then, unlike the S3 Sleep that you have, Task scheduler cannot perform tasks.
However, if S0 Modern standby computer is allowed to enter S0 Modern standby by Power options turning off its display then, provided that Power options is set to Sleep after - never, Task scheduler can run tasks.
So, in the second case, S0 Modern standby is very much like S3 Sleep but in the first case it is more like off albeit with a quick turn-on.

All the best,
Denis

Yep...unfortunately, this is the second laptop I've owned that has done this...it only takes it happening one time to cost you long-term battery life (result of a fully discharged battery).

Technician just came out. He used a slightly longer screw and it went right in and held. New palm rest, and laptop teardown, not required. When I replace the battery again (hopefully not for a long time), I just need to match that screw to the hole.

I'm thinking that the difference between your experience with the Dell XPS 15 9510 and my problem free experience with the same Dell XPS 15 9510 is whether it is in daily use.

My XPS 15 9510 is my main computer and is in daily use 12 hours or more each day, 7 days a week. Whenever I put my XPS 15 9510 in my backpack, I always Power Down. Other than that, I don't power down and only close the lid on my XPS 15 at the end of the day and open the lid to start the next day. All my work is just as I left it when I closed the lid at the end of the previous day. (Of course all my work is always saved in real time to my 1 Terabyte OneDrive cloud.)

You list a desktop computer in "My Computer" and don't list a 2nd laptop computer at all. My guess is that all your work is done on your desktop and your laptop is used only infrequently.

If one doesn't shut a laptop down if it isn't going to be used for an extended period of time or if it its being placed in an enclosed case, I can certainly see how Modern Standby could be problematic.
