Gave Dell touch screen with Windows 11 to daughter and got me an OTVOC. Being a PC builder I own many desktop PCs as well. I am a father of five providing PCs, laptops, and tablets for all my family, most of which I have modified, rebuilt, or simply built from scratch. I do not own a cell phone, never have, never will.

Evening Scannerman.

It was 1981 for me, and a daughter. My late wife's health issues meant that we would only have just the one child. I tried to interest my daughter in the hardware (and in car maintenance) but she's not practically minded that way (I still have to re-wire mains plugs for her). She is however a master of Excel and these days writes and maintains complex Excel modelling spreadsheets for a major insurance company.

UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

In 1987 I became a Dad. I was far too busy working to support a family to mess with PCs. Then in 1989 my first daughter was born. Shortly thereafter I met Jim, the man whose computer stuff I recently inherited. Jim was patient with me. I had a modest interest in electronics (CB radios, scanners, high fidelity sound systems etc.) and of course, like many young lads in that day, I liked to fiddle with components.

Jim would come over for visits and bring his bread boards with him and attempt to teach me computer basics. Some of it I would actually comprehend, much of it would be over my head. Didn't matter. Jim had many interests. After dinner we would go out to the gun range and do some target shooting. Then we would go back to his place and he'd go over some of the more serious stuff with me on an oscilloscope. The guy was intense. In 1992 I started playing around with a Commodore 64. In 1994 I graduated to a Tandy thanks to Jim. I never bothered with having my own Windows PC until 1999.

I remember when Jim tried to persuade me to forget about proprietary prebuilds and to build my own PC. He kept assuring me that a high school kid could do it. I was reluctant. By the time 2002 rolled around I was brave enough to start switching out RAM and hard drives and was well acquainted with Windows. By 2004 not only was I building my own PCs but I was also building them for others and doing PC repair. I have always been a bit of a Johnny-come-lately. It was around this time when my doctor told me I had to slow down and to consider going on permanent medical. I ignored him. (Probably shouldn't have done that.) Instead, I found a lovely lady from Louisiana online and decided that more family would be a great idea. That's how I wound up with three more lovely daughters.

All three of those girls have been at a keyboard since they were in diapers. They are very computer savvy and sometimes they make me feel like a complete Luddite. Yesterday, I caught the ginger yelling at one of her friends via web cam because they didn't know a thing about PC maintenance. I had to take her aside and explain to her gently that most kids in her generation are all into hand held devices and are clueless when it comes to PCs. I told her she had to be patient because not all kids grew up with their own desktop since they were in diapers.

The legend lives on.
I grew up with CB-radio and i was interested in electronics as a child. I built my first disco-light at 7.. and then it became more advanced.. Computers came 87... then at the age of 18 i got my first ham-radio and started to build my own antennas and amplifiers.. and from there it have derailed on finding a challenge i wont be able to solve... Now 30 years later and i have still not found the wall of what I'm not able to solve. (i leave out some of my 90's computer adventures as they probibly break some forum rules if i write to much.
But i cant dive down on the deep challenges to really test where the wall is, as i dont have the hardware for it..
So with my background it had been fun to meet you and Jim IRL :-)

I would love to see those pictures! Admittedly, I should have shown a keener interest in those things but I also had a love affair with nature so fishing, camping, hiking etc. were also a large part of my life. In some ways I was a bit spoiled. My folks had a cabin out at this lake which provided a spectacular ground plane for Dad's Moon Raker on an 80 foot tower. He also had a 1000 Watt linear amplifier on a SBE Console II which was modified for use with a slider (VFO). I would shoot skip for hours on that thing both on upper and lower. He never let me use his Yaesu but there were times I was really tempted.
Alas, I don't remember Dad's call letters but I certainly enjoyed getting away from the 11 meter band. I was quite the QSL card collector.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Jim would have found you amazing. There weren't many techie girls around back in those days. (At least not in the Canadian North-West).

33's and 88's

Gave Dell touch screen with Windows 11 to daughter and got me an OTVOC. Being a PC builder I own many desktop PCs as well. I am a father of five providing PCs, laptops, and tablets for all my family, most of which I have modified, rebuilt, or simply built from scratch. I do not own a cell phone, never have, never will.

I have not done so much of fishing, camping and hiking even i have done it as a kid. I also learned bush survival to be able to handle a car breakdown in the middle of nowhere in -30C.. But as i never was into hiking i never dug down into that..
But i did some rock-climbing when i was around 18-20 years and was in my fitness peak of life. So i have seen nature, but i was never in love with nature. :-)
I have my cars as analog interest, and i know more about cars then i know about computers. 🤓 Computers was my mental challenge as i thought stuff in life was to easy... now its the other way around.. computers is easy and my health and life is a challenge..... So the table has turned 180 degrees.

I was mostly on 10m or to be honest i was mostly on 25 to 30MHz.. i felt it was a good compromise not to big antennas and still be able to skip. :-) I only had 300watt as i didn't want to kill my neighbors TV or radios as i lived in a apartment complex. 😅

73 and 88 i remember.. 33 i had to look up. *lol* 😁
I have not been in that world since i took down my antenna 2001 and sold my radios... I did keep one radio as it had no money-value.. an Sommerkamp TS-2000DX

I rebuilt two engines from scratch back in the day: A huge 8 cylinder 360 and a 6 cylinder 231. So I suppose I could say that I'm also somewhat mechanically inclined. It has been a while for me too as i took it all down 25years ago. :-) I was never in to Morse Code thogh so i used SSB most of the time and AM/FM locally.
CB radio antennas can be found cheap, so why not get one if you have the radio. :-) Just dont forget to get an SWR meter so you can tune in the antenna so you dont burn the radio :-)
V8 is fun and a has a good sound.. 6.. i have a straight 6 in my Jeep 4.0L engine.. But my summer has a 4cylinder turbo charged engine. and yes i have taken that apart and rebuild it when i tuned the engine from 160HP to 350HP. 😀

Yeah.. it's extra fun if you have bad grounding and just a tiny bit mismatched antenna.. then you can really mess up peoples TV and radio.:devilish: as so many analogue electronic devices have a control crystal that you can interfere. 😅
But nowadays is most things digital, so they dont react in the same fun way.

Yeah SSB was my domain (upper and lower) but a VFO gave me pretty close to 800 "channels" to modulate on. Not exactly legal but definitely lots of fun. Hey, it was the 70's!

Yeah, I drove that big black gas guzzling van for about a decade before I dumped it. Once I rebuilt that engine it refused to die. The 231 was a V6. I never owned a 4 banger until the turn of the millennium. I'm an old angry man. I gotta have a little power. I'm back to driving 6 bangers lol.

I remember back in the day there were some models of CBs that used cheap Chinese crystals and frequencies bled and cross-channeled on those so badly that nasty things happened to people who owned them. 💀

5am over here...
so its time to put my computers to sleep and unwind in front of the TV before bed so i hopefully get tired.

But i will be here tomorrow with my first cup of coffee in my hand and answer all post that might drop in between now and then. :-)

Take care all and stay safe.(y)
Hello Marie
