Thanks Ken, yes I did.

Best I can get currently to my house is 80Mbps FTTC, my current deal is 50Mbps (nominally, I actually get 55Mbps most of the time).

There is now a recently laid fibre cable that runs down my street, with an access points already in place outside each house. Not gone live yet, but when it does it looks like it will offer 900Mbps.

Not sure I'll bother to switch, as a single person household my 50Mbps is more than enough.....
I've got 200Mbs download and 24Mbs upload. They now offer 1Gbs but what I have now is more than I really need. The speed wars between Virgin and Open Reach have been interesting recently. Virgin's top offering until recently for home users was 200. OR then offered 500 and immediately Virgin upped theirs to 1Gbs and then OR upped theirs to 900Mbs. So it looks like Virgin have had the ability for a while but was just waiting for OR to catch up.

Neither Virgin nor Open Reach do fibre to the premises in my area. They seem to have left that to some company I've never heard of, Swish Fibre. Not the most helpful of websites, any useful info requires you to register to be able to read it.

I can empathize, Bree. One company has faster broadband connection one block away from my house and won't run the lines that last block leaving me to Internet speeds that are slower than I'd like to have.

Not heard of them either. Mine was installed in the mid 1980's for Analogue Cable TV by a company called Jones Cable TV. That was taken over by NTL, which then sold out to Virgin Media who changed it to digital TV and broadband using the same street level infrastructure.

Morning Charlie.

There is such disparity in Internet services in Canada between Urban (dense) and rural (sparse).

I can basically buy any speed I want, well above what I can use, and I have clients with a max speed of 5Mbps.

Time, I think , to switch to another machine - only to get a larger screen though.....
Well this is nice, I'm now using another 'unsuitable' machine that's happily (and competently) running Win11 22H2. It's my now demoted previous 'main machine', my System One over on TF. My modestly spec'd System One here that's now my 'main machine' blows both off them out of the water on paper.....

...but in actual use the old Atom powered netbook is good for some light browsing, and this old Toshiba workhorse with its Pentium more than good enough for browsing, and still not too bad at most everything else. Besides, it still has one of the clearest looking 15" screens of any of my machines. 💻

My solar DIY project I started in April taking some of the house off-grid I have all my batteries done for now and have 36 panels installed I will be installing 30 more panels this fall after hurricane season and adding my icebox and freezer to the off-grid section. It has exceeded my expectations as I am going as cheap as I can using second-hand stuff not intended for off-grid use.
Here is a chart of my yearly usage from my power company.
