Solved Latest Macrium Reflect 8 updates


I've updated 3 desktop PC's and my little Lenovo laptop to 24H2 and the laptop screen now shows this when I boot it up.

Oh, and I didn't install the Preview Update that seems to be causing a lot of people a bit of grief at the moment.

This is the menu created by Macrium Reflect. The menu looks perfectly fine (full blue screen with the selections on the left like it's always done) on the 3 desktop PC's but the laptop now shows this.

Everything has been 'squashed' to the left side of the screen and it now has a pink background. The menu options ("Windows 11" and "Macrium Reflect System Recovery") still work though.

I've tried deleting the boot menu in Macrium, rebooted and re-created the boot menu but it still looks like that.

I'll live with it if I have to but it is kinda annoying.

This has nothing to do with Macrium, and everything to do with 24H2.

Just a very few display drivers have this issue, but for those that do I have found no fix. I have had this issue on just one of my laptops since June, all the others have a normal blue boot menu.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

I get that on my Dell tablet. A partial workaround is to run MSCONFIG, select boot tab and check option Base Video and option to Make all boot settings permanent.

This tells the bios to display the graphics screen in a slightly lower resolution (1024x768 on my tablet).

So you get a normal looking screen on bootup albeit it does not fill entire screen but it looks much better than the screen display only using left half.

I cannot say how well this works on very high resolution screens.

My ASUS laptops do not suffer this issue.

Thank you, that works for me too (even without making all boot settings permanent).
The only other (unacceptable) fix I had found so far was to uninstall the display driver and revert to using the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter.

If you do not make settings permanent, it may revert on shutting down pc. Of course, see what happens if you shutdown.

You can also change the boot menu to a text-based menu by running this command from an elevated command prompt:

bcdedit /set {default} bootmenupolicy legacy

To switch back:

bcdedit /set {default} bootmenupolicy standard

I'll let it revert then. The only PC I have this issue on multi-boots 23H2 and the Insider 24H2 builds, Canary, Dev, and RP. If 23H2 is the default OS I have the normal menu, any 24H2 as default has the small pink menu. I want to see if MS ever gets round to making a fix for this (been waiting 5 months, no luck so far.... :think: )

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

And with 24h2 the rounded multiboot graphics boxes look like kiddy lunch boxes - the older square boxes were much cleaner.

The older style have been since Windows 8. Changed in W11 now just for the sake of it.

Thanks guys. I decided to go with the MSCONFIG option posted by cereberus.

I was thinking about the text only option posted by hsehestedt but that seems a little "old fashioned" these days.

The boot screen looks a lot better now and I don't mind that it doesn't fill the screen (it's just 4:3 instead of 16:9) but at least it's a lot easier to look at (looks a bit 'washed out' in the attached picture but that's just my phone).

LOL. Very true, but it's good to know all your options. This one actually saved me one on of my older computers. It may be some BIOS incompatibility, but just on that one machine I could not get the graphical boot menu to work correctly when setting up a dual-boot config. My only way to work around it turned out to set the boot menu to text only.

Works fine on every other machine so it is probably that machine that is the issue.

Did you know if you press printscreen button on the graphics screen, it gets added to clipboard and you can paste it wherever you want.

I did not believe this at first when told about it as Windows has not yet started but obviously printscreen works in winpe mode.

So print screen works in boot environment and will hold in clipboard until Windows boots to use the screen?

I didn’t know that. I never would of thought to have even tried it. But I have wondered how people do it… DUH DERP

I don't think the ClipBoard stands up during a reBOOT. If you have a FileExplorer in your WinPE, I'm sure you can past it using that facility.

Makes sense, so you need to catch it during boot and pray the PC doesn’t reboot and cause you to go postal because you really, really wanted that screenshot.

There must be a program then.

I just press printscreen at the graphics menu page and then paste here AS I have just done..

I would not expect it to survive a reboot and I tested it for sure it does not survive.

Still a neat way to show the boot screen without using a camera.

I used to cheat and run windows in Hyper-V then I could use snipping tool in host to get image of boot screen.
Using printscreen is a lot easier LOL.
