I find the LEGACY BOOT screen to be way more efficient that the modern Windows BOOT screen. It arrives much quicker and does not need a mostly pre-assembled Windows (display driver, mouse support, etc.) to display.

You have the Reflect LTSC initial release, there are no updates for LTSC yet. There is very little (if any) information from Macrium about what exactly LTSC means in respect of Reflect support.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, 1920x1080 touchscreen, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine. As its new home has an existing digital licence for Pro I've been able to upgrade the migrated OS from Home to Pro.

Yes it may be quicker but some devices only show the text screen in really low resolution (800x600) and if you select Macrium Reflect or other imaging tools (for example), they sometimes start in low resolution mode as well.

For Reflect, this is a PITA as some like finish are offscreen.

What is really bizarre is if you turn off secure boot, everything works fine (text in hi res, winpe tools boot in hi res).

I get this issue with both my ASUS laptops and my Dell laptop but not my Lenovo.

So in the end, graphics boot menu looks cleaner, less fiddly and works fine with secure boot on as well albeit a bit slower response than the text boot menu.

It is not uncommon for it to take a while between notification of an update and it being available to download. This is usually down to the time it takes for the changes to ripple out to the CDN (content delivery network) servers.

Sometimes they're not released at all. I've seen release notes get put up in the past and then pulled down.

It's the way they work. They write release notes, but not always release that particular version. It was explained on the Macrium forum a few years ago.

Yes, that seems to be it. Occasionally internal builds, never intended to be released publicly, make it onto the latest release notes by mistake.

I've removed any reference to these 'phantom' releases from post #1, leaving v8.1.8110 - 10th July 2024 as the latest release, as it's the latest one that is actually available to download ;)

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

When I update Reflect, I also redo the USB Rescue Media as a safeguard. Is it also necessary to remove and reinstall the boot menu after a Reflect update or is that unaffected by any changes? Thanks Mitch.

I understand from Macrium Support that you do NOT necessarily have to update your boot menu.

However, when you recreate the USB Rescue Media, it always ask if you want to update the version on the boot menu.

I always update the USB Rescue Media first and, IF that boots OK, I then update my boot menu.

It's a good idea to create a new rescue USB after a Reflect update, but it's not generally essential (the exception is when there a bug was found in the previous build's rescue media, if so the release notes will tell you to rebuild it).

The same applies to the boot menu. There should be no need to remove it first, on opening the rescue media builder the first time after an update it should tell you that a new version of Reflect is available, and ask if you want to rebuild the boot menu.

Yes you are! You will get a FREE upgrade if licence as not expired. Remember support for MR v 8.1.3311 will cease on 7th October 2025.

On UEFI devices this does not matter. Windows PE can run ONLY at the native resolution and nothing else, but some apps fail to take this into consideration and simply don't scale properly.

What used to be Norton Ghost (Now System Recovery, Desktop Edition from Veritas) has this problem. I had a case open with them about it for SEVERAL YEARS but it never got fully resolved. I finally gave up and closed the case a few months ago.

Updated one of my PC's so far with no problems

Yes, when I saw that I had a momentary sense of dread as memories came flooding back of Microsoft's infamous GWX (Get Windows 10) campaign from nearly 10 years ago.

It was a long, hard battle to evade the constant nags and other tactics that were used by MS to 'urge' users of Windows 7 and 8.1 (especially Windows 7) to upgrade to Windows 10.

I'm hoping Paramount isn't going to employ the same tactics with Macrium Reflect. If they do, I may have to look at other backup options.

At the moment I plan to stay with 8.1 for as long as possible, I have 4 'lifetime' licences.
