Solved Latest Macrium Reflect 8 updates

Tested v8.1.8595 and found an issue when restoring an image.
I had created new USB media so it had the v8.1.8595 of reflect.exe on it.
I created an image then tested restoring.
Three out of three times when the restore got to 99% this message popped up on the screen.
Clicked OK.
All partitions were restored correctly but have never seen this message before.
Recreated USB media and still had this message on restore at 99%.

Did restore action finish and working ?

As Count Mike asked. My question as well.

Of course we'll find out soon enough ... I'm a little surprised that there is even an update to V8.1. Macrium has shown some grace here.

Hence my comment above.

I wonder if we start seeing some prompts to update or similar.
I even noticed a slow down in speed in the previous update. I haven't tested this version though.

@Scott

Thanks. Essentially Win 11's habit of requiring every file type to be nailed down. Normally, updating with an msu file preserves the app choices already made (fonts etc as well, of course), but a Repair Update destroys them.

Again, thanks for the helpful reply.

You're right, that happened to me during the test. My restore restored the previous boot menu (8325) which does not
produce that message. So I updated everything to 8595, made a new backup and it produced that message.

So its the new rescue media that has the issue.

I'm a little surprised that there is even an update to V8.1. Macrium has shown some grace here.
You shouldn't be surprised. Reflect v8 is in Extended Support. That means no new features, but it will get security and platform compatibility fixes for one year following the release of the next version, Reflect X. The Extended Support for v8 ends on 8th October 2025.

Macrium said:

Stage 1:

Current Support begins from the release date and lasts until the next full product version is released. For example, Reflect 8 to Reflect X. The entirety of our customer support services are available during this stage.

Stage 2:

Extended Support begins when the Current Support stage ends and lasts for a specific duration. Typically, this is one full year. During this stage, customer support services are limited.

ProductReleasedExtended Support
Start Date
Extended Support
End Date
Reflect X8 Oct 2024TBCTBC
Reflect 818 May 202108 Oct 202408 Oct 2025

What would be a surprise would be an update after extended support has ended, but even that has happened before when MS made a change to windows that broke all versions of Reflect....

....Windows 10 v1903. At the time v7 was the current build, but Macrium released a patch for v6, even though it was two years after the release of v7, and a year after extended support for v6 had ended.
If Macrium Reflect X is too expensive, what will you switch to? - post #204

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

In case this error happens, are there reasons to fear that part of the restore, even only 1 sector, hasn't been restored? If it were me I'd restore again with the previous Rescue Media if available (I use to store my RM isos along with the images), but maybe it's overkill????

Actually it is just the USB media that is messed up.
I downloaded v8.1.8325 from macrium then installed it and created USB with that version.
Then upgraded to v8.1.8595 but did not update the USB media.
Tested restore and all worked without any error message.
If you no longer have the previous version installer you can still download from macrium.
Go into your account and copy the download URL then replace the v8.1.8595 with v8.1.8325 in the URL.

Anyone deleted the 1GB folder in their C:\boot\?
Appears to be Macrium files for creating a WIM file I assume? Or Bootable media?

Safe to delete?
Only came across it as setting up a client with 22 PCs backing up to network. Extra 22GB 😄
Cheers

C:\Boot\Macrium is Macrium Reflect's Staging Area. This is where Macrium builds the .wim file for the rescue media. It remains stored there for two reasons.

The first is so it doesn't have to to rebuild the rescue media every time you want to make a rescue USB, it just copies the existing files over.

The second is that when you add Macrium Reflect to the boot menu, it boots from the files stored here, as shown in the BCD entry.

1751050111989.webp

There's nothing here that Macrium can't rebuild if you delete it, but if you have added Macrium to the boot menu it will no longer be able to boot to the rescue media.

More here:
Staging Area
The Staging Area is re-populated each time the rescue media is re-built. Immediately after the Windows Image (WIM) file is copied to the Staging Area, it is mounted and the current version of Macrium Reflect is copied to the WIM file system along with required components and additional files extracted from WaikFilesxNNnnn.exe....

When the 'Build' button is clicked files are copied from the Staging Area to the rescue media target. For the Boot menu, the Windows Boot Configuration Data (BCD) is updated to add a 'Macrium Reflect System Recovery' menu option which loads the Windows Image File (WIM) directly from the Staging Area.

Only came across it as setting up a client with 22 PCs backing up to network. Extra 22GB 😄
C:\boot\macrium is not essential for restoring a PC, Reflect can easily rebuild it after the restore as/when needed. For Reflect v8 you can add a registry entry that will exclude this folder from the backup. (Reflect X goes a step further and adds exclusions to the Reflect GUI).

Yeah thanks mate.
I have shared numerous paths with the forum regarding suggested paths. (USOshared, Software Distribution, etc)
But no one helped. The issue I had was these folders were still backed up during a disk image. So the snapshot was only excluding some of the paths. Weird...

This is the post where I showed data still backed up (exclusions from Shadow Copy not working):
Hey guys,
Anyone had any success with all their exclusions being processed?
I find most are successful, however my other exclusions in the same group seem to still be included in the backup image.

Example, OneDrive is excluded via path or variable (personal / business) however all contents are included in the backup.
I have also several tried variations - with and without /*, /*.*, /*.* /s, and even quotes `"` (in orange below).
Microsoft's own existing shadow copy existing rule includes an asterisk in the file name, which is impressive. So I see nothing wrong with my rules. I have added in blue which folders are still processed and backed up, including their size.

Registry Hive Configuration
Created 3x Multi-String Value entries under:

$UserProfile$\Documents\Outlook\*.*

$AllVolumes$\$Recycle.Bin\*.* /s
$AllVolumes$\RECYCLER\*.* /s

So I've left all the " quotes and symbols to give you an idea of what configuration looks like, plus highlighting what I removed. Computer is Windows 11 ~23H2. I added the same exclusions to both Folder and Disk Image registry paths (just in case).
I have also expanded the variables and used the finite path, which made no difference, and found them when browsing the backup:
M:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Network\Downloader
M:\Users\Admin\Local Settings\Temp
M:\Users\All Users\TEMP
M:\Users\Admin\AppData\Local\Temp

Does anyone have any ideas on a better approach to this? To get the exclusions to be more reliable for disk images? I have already shaved A LOT off from disk backups, especially moving the OneDrive folder to another partition, but some of my and my client computers have only 128GB or 256GB notebooks, which is too difficult to split up when 80GB already reserved for local backups on another partition...

I have no problems with MR folder backups, as can specify wildcards, files, paths and extensions. Just the MR Disk Images I want to cut the fat and trim down.
Cheers!

PS. I should note, I understand when a backup is mounted as a drive, Windows automatically adds Recycle Bin, System Volume Information, etc.

And here the original paths (from my personal list of backup exclusions) I shared. The list is even more extensive today, in order to save resources on the backup drives and network REPO for clients:
You can use the standard Windows `%%` variables (`%AppData%`) BUT you will need to change the symbols (`%` to `$`) to substitute paths. For example, they would look like this:
- `$AllVolumes$` = C:\
- `$AllUsersProfile$` / `$ProgramData$` = C:\ProgramData
- `$AppData$` = c:\Users\John\AppData\Roaming
- `$HomeDrive$` = C:
- `$HomePath$` = \Users\John
- `$LocalAppData$` = C:\Users\John\AppData\Local
- `$OneDrive$` / `$OneDriveCommercial$` / `$OneDriveConsumer$` = OneDrive (- Exchange) profile path.
- `$ProgramFiles$` / `$ProgramW6432$` = C:\Program Files
- `$ProgramFiles(x86)$` = C:\Program Files (x86)
- `$SystemDrive$` = C:
- `$SystemRoot$` = C:\Windows
- `$Temp$` = C:\Users\John\AppData\Local\Temp
- `$UserProfile$` = C:\Users\John
- `$UserName$` = John
- `$WinDir$` = C:\Windows

IE: You could use `$LocalAppData$` or `$HomeDrive$$HomePath$\AppData\Local` or `C:\Users\$UserName$\AppData\Local` - they all equal one another (normally). I believe powershell can output your available variables. Every system is different. Type: `Get-ChildItem Env: | Sort Name`

You can use system variables and format as:
- `$UserProfile$\Folder\FileName.ext`
- `$OneDriveConsumer$\Documents\~$* /s`
- `$AllVolumes$\TemporaryFiles\*.* /s`
- `'*\Folder with Spaces\*.*' /s`

To include all sub-folders, add ` /s` as a suffix.
If a path has spaces, wrap it in "'" apostrophe marks.

The backup exclusions I recommend and I consider generally standard and safe, include:
- `swapfile.sys`
- `hiberfil.sys`
- `pagefile.sys`
- `*\thumbs.db`
- `*\*.db-shm`
- `*\*.db-wal`
- `$WinDir$\Memory.dmp` (or `*\Windows\Memory.dmp`)
- `$WinDir$\SoftwareDistribution\*.* /s`
- `$WinDir$\System32\Msdtc\msdtc.log`
- `$WinDir$\Prefetch\*.* /s`
- `$WinDir$\CSC\*.* /s`
- `$AllVolumes$\$Windows.~BT\*.* /s`
- `$AllVolumes$\$Windows.~WS\*.* /s`
- `$AllVolumes$\$WinREAgent\*.* /s`
- `$AllVolumes$\$Recycle.Bin\*.* /s`
- `$AllVolumes$\RECYCLER\*.* /s`
- `'$AllVolumes$\System Volume Information\*.* /s'`
- `$UserProfile$\OneDrive\*.* /s` (or `$OneDriveConsumer$\`)
- `'$UserProfile$\OneDrive - Exchange\*.* /s'` (or `$OneDriveCommercial$\`)
- `'C:$\Users\All Users\TEMP\'`
- `'$UserProfile$\Local Settings\Temp\*.* /s'`
- `$UserProfile$\AppData\Temp\*.* /s`
- `$UserProfile$\AppData\Local\Temp\*.* /s` (or `$Temp$\`)
- `$UserProfile$\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\*.ost` (optional, as with all listed)
- `'*\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\'`
- `'*\Temporary Internet Files\'`
- `*\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\UserData\____\Thumbnails\*.* /s` (eg. \Default\)
- `*\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\UserData\____\Cache\*.* /s`
- `*\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\____\cache2\*.* /s` (eg. \xxxxxx.default\)
- `*\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\____\jumpListCache\*.* /s`
- `*\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\____\startupCache\*.* /s`
- `*\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\____\shader-cache\*.* /s`
- `*\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\____\Thumbnails\*.* /s`
- `'*\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\*\parent.lock'` (or `$AppData$\Moz...`)
- `*\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default\Cache\ *.* /s`<br>
etc...

I am sure you would laugh if you saw my backup XML from Macrium and other suites. 😄
