Hi.

Latest Nvidia drivers are causing problems in my PC, which has Windows 11 24H2 Build 26100.1301.

When I installed Nvidia drivers v. 560.81, my monitor screen went black and I could not do anything except to shut down my PC using the power button on the case. After powering it back on, I was greeted with a strange-looking screen with black bars on top and bottom of my screen. (See attached picture taken with my phone). Fortunately, with this funny-looking screen, I could revert to my previous divers to get back online.

I had Nvidia drivers v.560.70 before. It also caused me the same issue on the same PC when I had a build prior to 26100.1301. It could be Windows 11 build 26100.1150. Therefore, I think Nvidia has started behaving just like Cloudstrike recently. It is causing havoc.

Please note I always check "Uninstall previous drivers" checkbox when installing the new Nvidia drivers and I have an unsupported PC, on which I installed Windows 11 using workarounds. My gfx card is GeForce GTX 1050 Ti.

I have a GeForce GTX 1050Ti 4GB Video memory on a Dell XPS 15 9570 Notebook using a Intel i8750H CPU, not experiencing any problems. Did you run CoreInfo64 to see if your CPU supports POPCNT or not? I always do a clean install and on a supported PC.

I don't have a GTX 1050 ti. The 1050 ti is on the supported list for both Studio and Game Ready versions of 560.81.

The Studio version works fine, so far, on my RTX 4090. I didn't do a clean install. As far as I know, your problems aren't the norm.

If you wish to experiment further, you could try Display Driver Uninstaller. That is supposed to remove all traces of the graphic drivers. It's recommended to run it in Safe Mode, but I have used it in regular Windows.

I'm not optimistic that it will help, but I can't think of much else. Have you run the Windows system file checker? (sfc/ scannow from a command line window with admin rights.)

I believe one cannot install Windows 11 24H2 if the CPU in question does not support POPCNT instruction set. Therefore, this should not be of any concern. My CPU is eligible for installing this build of Windows 11 by some workarounds. Anyway, thanks for your reminder.

Windows 11 24H2 now clearly states that you need a CPU with POPCNT support

I wasn't able to install Geforce drivers version 560.70 at first, either. The same problem had happened. After a Windows update, drivers 560.70 installed properly. The same thing happened this time also. Maybe I need something like a Windows update again. Please see my post

For information only: I decided to re-try to install Nvidia drivers and took a different approach this time. When I downloaded Nvidia drivers from Nvidia web site and ran the executable making the necessary installation choices, my system crashed. Now I used Device Manager to update the drivers, GeForce drivers version 560.81 installed properly.

When you run the Nvidia driver executable, it extracts all the files to a directory of your choice first, usually C:\ drive. When updating through Device Manager, I pointed to that directory for driver files and my Nvidia drivers updated well.

I do not know what the conflict is between the Nvidia big installer and my PC. But from now on I will definitely install Nvidia drivers using Device Manager.

I hope this post helps others having similar problems like mine when installing Nvidia drivers.

I should say I am using Windows Insiders Beta which is still 23H2 and not 24H2 but I mentioned POPCNT because that was actually in the nVidia article. The black bars seems like it is in the wrong timing mode or something.

It seems Nvidia is following suit after Microsoft. I am curious to know what's next to make unsupported PC more unsupported 😊

Asking because my PC used to run MS Flight Sim 2020 well enough, but over the last 6-12 months the game became unplayable (extremely low frame rates). I uninstalled the sim.

Does this community recommend a particular NVIDIA driver to enjoy the best performance in 2-4 year old games? Other than iRacing, I don't play anything brand new. Just iRacing and Cyberpunk really.

I just read elsewhere someone recommending 556.12 for older games.
