Leak of upcoming features for Windows 11

  • Staff
There's an interesting personalization feature coming to Windows 11 - Stickers for your wallpaper.

You'll be able to configure them using a new Sticker Editor app, they'll persist across wallpaper changes as long as you don't use a slideshow, use Fill fit & have only 1 monitor.

System admins will be able to disable these using a policy called Education\AllowStickers. The single monitor and Fill fit limitations are quite strange, hopefully just an early implementation quirk.

A few more improvements coming to Windows 11 Leaf fluttering in wind
Sustainability: better energy consumption and device recycling awareness
• Focus Assist is becoming Focus, now schedulable through Outlook & sporting more granular options
• Notification priorities no longer tucked away in UI
In case you wonder what the leaf glyphs on top of the Sustainability page are for: They're supposed to indicate your device's "Eco Score"
Not yet functional in this build

Looks like tiny semblances of tablet mode may be coming back to Windows 11, a taskbar setting labeled "Automatically hide the taskbar when using your device as a tablet" is in the works.

The Settings app is slowly but surely gaining more hero controls, the newest addition can be found in the Time & language section. (Hidden in 22543)

I'll drink to that. Why would MS concentrate on all this kiddy stuff when users need all these serious issues addressed to get real work done.
I know 11 is still fledgling but come on, MS!! It's not like we're using phones out here.

Hi there

How about some REAL functionality improvements into an OS -- like fixing File explorer to be able to display long file and path names > 266 chars. Internally it can but things like File explorer and a load of 3rd party Apps are still using the old API which has been around since XP days and limits display to max 266 chars.

Another one -- I like the idea of using physical vhdx files -- so IMO it shouldn't be too hard to be able to run those concurrently - not as "Classical VM's" but as real; hardware by just switching tasks -- just swap say W10 out and Swap in W11 - by a really fast efficient suspend / hibernate function. People have got powerful CPU's and fast HDD's so shouldn't be beyond the bounds of possibility -- and would save all the overhead of having to use paravirtualised hardware and Virtual Machines. Running 2 physical OS'es concurrently even if "swap time" between the two would be around 20 / 25 secs would be fine becuase most people on a Single user machine wouldn't be swapping that frequently.

Another one also -- why are most drivers in the windows\system32\Driverstore folder. Surely about time to have proper 64 bit hardware drivers.

Another sensible one -- a proper built in FTP / SFTP program like Filezilla for easy file transfer - almost everybody these days uses some sort of networking and file transfers between devices -- this should be integral to an OS.

I'd also suggest a proper Media streaming application using most of the common protocols -- media sttreaming is now very definitely mainstream. OK it can be done with VLC / KODI or other apps out there but why not make as part of the OS -- it's what huge numbers of people actually do on their computers.

I'm not really interested in corners (unless it's Chelsea F.C playing Premier league football taking them), Wallpaper things which @Edwin says can easily be done already, new icons which anybody can create by using ICONFX or similar program, weather apps showing me what the wind speed is on Neptune or whatever.

Enterprise versions need to be basically stripped down of all bloatware -- who needs Ms Games on an Enterprise machine -- OK for Home systems

I hate emoji things anyway -- never use them. What's wrong is expressing what you mean than using a meaningless "kindergarten" type of sqiggly drawing.

Cheers
jimbo

When I use to post about wanting MS to give us more options to customize Windows11 like we could with Windows 10, I was told that it wasn't going to happen. The reason why was because major corporations didn't want their employees messing around with the OS. So, I repeat my question. What corporation wanted rounded corners, new emojis and desktop stickers? To me they are childish and not very productive.
If you want your OS to look like Windows 10, just go back to Windows 10. I don't understand why people upgrade to a new OS only to want it to look like the previous OS. . . .

Hi there

A nice task for you -- make the W11 GUI look like XP with the Black Luma theme -- so much so that a typical user would really think it's XP not a 64 bit modern running OS with proper security running W11. !!!!

Cheers

That's a helluva task! I think I'll let Stardock take care of that one!

I'm with you. I just like the option of different icons, cursors, and the fences to spruce things up and organize them a bit. Of course, I'll be using WindowBlinds when it comes out for W11. I'd like to better customize my windows.

That's all just eye candy, though. I enjoy the functionality and stability of W11.

The only thing that's not so stable but still tolerable, is the iCUE software for my Corsair keyboard. I don't think that's W11's issue, though. It seems to be an iCUE issue. Even the iCUE allows for eye candy, when you think about it.

That's a helluva task! I think I'll let Stardock take care of that one!
I actually don't mind W11 the way it is..., couple of add-ons here and there and she's good to go!
Hi there

@Edwin

I'm basically happy so far with W11 apart from File explorer which still has the 266 char limitation on displaying long file and path names -- Internally Windows can display long names but as most apps are still using the old explorer API for browsing -- that's all we get. Filezilla though seems OK with long names until windows file explorer converts them to 8.3 Md DOS convention.

I really enjoyed doing this though - creating a SINGLE VM (not 2nd level VM's) which would allow multi boot choice at start up of a few different Windows systems - actually it was easier than I thought -- I like the idea of having a SINGLE VM that allows me this choice -- backing up is simple too as just backing up the "Virtual Disk" I've got all those systems backed up at a stroke - any can be restored too as they are all seen as Windows standard vhdx files.

Enough choice at start up from a SINGLE VM !!!

How many of the whatever billions of Windows users have the ability or indeed the will to look past the visual bu!!sh!t.
About the same percentage of "pro" users who believes Windows should be a bland OS with no life
