We where not told that the Dev builds were now the Canary builds until it was to late to switch. All I want to do is stop getting new Canary builds but still get the other updates that are released. The same applies to the Dev Channel - it is also Hotel California with one exception i.e. you can upgrade to Canary.

It is actually irrelevant in terms of leaving if you were on Dev before it got auto converted to Canary.

Frankly, I have given up on Canary and Beta.

I maintain normal 22H2 as my main OS and clone it in a native boot vhd and join the clone to whatever channel I wish to join.

That way I never need to "leave" any Insider build - I just nuke them in less than two minutes by deleting vhd and removing boot entry using msconfig.

It would be easier. I would still have a lot of work to do and I might do it sometime in the near future. When I posted this thread I just wanted to know if it was possible to stop any new Canary builds without turning off updates. If MS would have given us an early warning about the Dev Channel switching to the Canary Channel I would have changed rings while I still had the chance. I know MS said that a clean install was the only way out but I'm hoping that they change their mind and give us a way to exit the Canary Channel. If I'm not mistaken they said the same thing about the Fast Ring and then gave us two chances to switch.

Things were different in days of Slow and Fast Ring - they all ended up converging with same build number as next release so you could switch to Beta or even next official release.

There was also the Skip Ahead Ring where the build number was ALWAYS ahead of next official release. You could not leave Skip Ahead only clean install.

With advent of Dev Channel, the build number is ALWAYS ahead of next official build release number. You cannot go backwards. So clean install is only option.

In essence Dev and Canary are effectively two Skip Ahead versions.

My mistake. Skip ahead was the ring I was thinking about. I haven't had much sleep. I'm going to need an extra cup or two of coffee. I know the chances of MS opening the door to drop out is slim but who knows for sure. I decided to turn updates back on. My new drsktop is now all updated. I do wish that I didn't have to disable SartAllBack for the Taskbar to work correctly.

Running Insider builds, especially Canary in combination with programs that alter the workings of Windows is always going to be risky with a high likelihood of running into problems.

It's definitely up to the programers to keep up. MS completely changed the Taskbar so it's going to be up to the programmer to decide if it's worth the time and effort to find a way to get StartAllBack working with the Taskbar again. And that's if it's even possible. It'll take awhile but I'll get use to the Taskbar being on the bottom again.

I actually had SAB working on 25926 except the Clock and SysTray didn't work properly..., then, Explorer decided to crash and it was game over!

You got that right. I'll accept it but I won't like it. It has been proving that it is possible to move the Taskbar. I don't understand why MS doesn't want to give us that option.

I found it. I had to turn on send Diagnostics to get it. It doesn't mention the Canary Channel but I can turn it on. I've already updated so I'll wait awhile and give it more thought. MS keeps changing the Insider team maybe will get a team that will make Insider builds exciting and worth installing again.

I understand MS wanting the OS to be more secure. I totally disagree with their decision to make irreversible changes to the Bios/UEFI. That comes under hardware. MS owns the OS but we own the hardware. That change should be up to us. With some of the other changes I think is geared for the younger generation and that leaves us out.
