Leaving the Canary Channel

MS should have given us the choice to remain on the Dev Channel or move up to the Canary Channel. I'm sure you can guess what I'm thinking about MS and them not letting us know ahead of time.

I don't think I'll go back to Canary, too much foolin around for little or no gain!

I have to admit that the Canary builds are very boring. I also have to say that if the Canary Builds are so HOT off the presses, why are things in the Dev builds being released to the Canary Builds. Shouldn't it be the other way around?

I actually like W11..., the look is neat and clean, the performance is terrific!
I just don't care for the ever depreciating functionality and familiarity, or the juvenile embellishments, not to mention the strong arm compatibility restrictions!

Yep - there is no longer any logic in Insiders.

Canary should be for speculative idea testing - no guarantee any udea will land in any release version

Dev similar but ideas are considered more likely to land in release version. Such ideas should have been tested in Canary. Still no guarantee ideas will land in release version but more likely

Beta again similar but ideas are considered likely to land in release version but still no 100% guarantee. Ideas ahould have cascaded from Dev and should be more stable.

In other words, cascade ideas C to D to B, polishing idea as it goes.

Key question - do we need separate Dev/Canary at all?

The present random implementations just shows a complete lack of coordination with left and right hands not knowing what is going on.

Furthermore A, B testing is 100% cow dung. It means there are two versions of every Insider build to further confuse Insiders.

I kind of feel that the Insider Programme has outlived its usefulness. As Insiders, we are being divided and conquered so we can never unite en masse telling MS know.

I shake my head in amazement at people who use Insider versions but do not understand simple basics protections.
First and foremost, do not put all your eggs in one basket.

1) Always keep release version as your main OS (keep image backups).

2) Boot insider versions as dual boot option - A great and very easy way of doing this is clone existing release version to a native boot virtual hard drive

3) Boot to vhd clone of Windows - join what ever Insider program you wish

4) Optional - backup vhds after each major build upgrade (you can use image backups but just easier to copy whole vhd assuming backup storage space is not an issue).

Follow the above and never care again about having to clean install Insider versions, which channel to use (you can have a vhd for each channel if you wish).

100% true - but you can repeat this stuff ad Nauseam - and still zillions of people don't listen and repeatedly ask the same questions !!!

I'm always (well not any more) surprised when THE SAME PEOPLE use a Canary or other type of beta software on their main or only computer as the prime OS and then grouse when it fails and then havea non bootable machine with no backup or even a backup but no software to restore it from "bare metal". Using a vhdx file doesn't take a lot of storage space, easy to back up etc etc. Meanwhile the prim standard OS can be left untouched.

Those who say its too complicated -- when there's enough simple instructions on this site alone of how to do it. Anybody who knows how to install insider versions via the insider program or via UUPDUMP should be more than capable of using vhdx files. Another good thing to know is how tou use dism /Apply-Image too. Its also not that difficult.

You know this stuff - I've just posted for others following these threads.

@jimbo45 If you feel something is annoying or tiresome then don't pay any attention to it. The original question was if there was a way to stop just the Canary Insider builds but still get the normal updates. I actually don't want to leave the Canary builds completely because I keep hoping the new releases will start getting worth it again. The Insider Builds are getting very boring and to me not worth the trouble of having to download and install twice before my desktop decides to update. When it comes to running Insider Builds I know there are pros and cons of running them. I also know how to do a clean install to start all over or search my images to find a build that I can use to leave the Insider builds. I have made a lot of changes since then and at this time I don't feel like taken the time to do it again so I decide to keep updating. One thing MS didn't tell us is that with the newer builds the thrill factor was going to be a thing of the past.

In the past it has been that after the expiry date Windows will restart every three hours. After two weeks it will fail to boot at all.

You could try setting you bios date to two weeks after expiry and see what it does
