Little gems I have found so far.

I've been reading a lot of articles in the last few days saying that Win 11 is nothing more than some GUI changes and a few small new features like the ability to run Android apps.

However, in less than an hour playing on my laptop, I'm already finding a few small gems that I really like. Some of these things are small items, but they all add up to a much improved experience.

Here's just a few small gems I've noticed:

1) There is now an option to reopen all file explorer windows after a reboot. So now, like other restartable apps such as notepad and Edge, you can perform a reboot and all those apps / windows will show up on your desktop right where they were before you rebooted.

2) When you right-click on a file or folder you have icons at the top of that context menu for Cut, Copy, etc. I really like that because on my Win 10 system these frequently used items are buried in a really big context list.

Image1.jpg

3) Also when right-clicking a file the option to "copy as path" is now right there. In Win 10 you had to hold SHIFT while right-clicking to see this option. I suspect that I use this more than many people do (probably a hundred times a day) so this is especially welcome.

For Windows 10 when there is an unexpected shutdown what steps do you make to reopen desktop unsaved notepad files?

Yeah, that setting is admittedly buried a bit. Open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options and then turn on Restart apps. I absolutely love that option.

NOTE: I know that you asked specifically about UNEXPECTED shutdowns. Not sure if this would work for that or only for a standard shutdown or reboot. Admittedly, my machine never restarts unexpectedly - it's absolutely rock solid :)

Typically the computers are on 24/7 out of habit.

I've confirmed the features absence with 1809 and presence with 21H1.

The feature became available with Windows 20H1 per this tutorial:

With unexpected shutdowns and restarts, including unexpected windows updates, browser windows can be reopened. Notepad still appears to be lost.

So far I like it. I just need them to officially grandfather in a couple of generations of older CPUs :)

View attachment 1228

3) Also when right-clicking a file the option to "copy as path" is now right there. In Win 10 you had to hold SHIFT while right-clicking to see this option. I suspect that I use this more than many people do (probably a hundred times a day) so this is especially welcome.

For 1 - Win 10 has that - for Explorer windows. It was in Explorer settings somewhere, I think in the General tab. Oops - no, it's in the view tab - found the tutorial.

I have to agree about the corners.

Since Android went to rounded corners (first on the displays, then on apps) I didn't think anything about it. So when I saw the pics of Win11 in the leak and the announcement, I was like Meh.

But I've only used it for 3 days.

3.
Days.

And I'm already hooked on them.

And I even complained bout how rounded corners were going to look weird on my hard right angle contours of my monitors.

Nope.

For 1 - Win 10 has that
Well I'll be. It does. I guess I'm finding stuff because I'm pouring over things in Win 11 with a fine tooth comb so I'm noting things that are already there that I've missed before.

Lol - That feature has been around since at least XP. I think. I want to say 7 had it, Vista had it, and even 2000 had it, but I'm stretching my brain for that.

Pretty sure 7 did.

Not crazy about the plain Jane, generic, boarder-less, rounded corners UI...

every app looks like a frickin kindergarten decal!!!

Do your living room windows have frames??? Do your living room windows have rounded corners???

Hey! Maybe they should've named the OS Microsoft Decals!!! :sneaky:

This is not much to look at...

000573.png

My Computer room has more money in it than any other room, and I have some pretty expensive Victorian furniture!

If I'm gonna stare at my computer all day, it better look frickin gorgeous!!!

Frankly, there is SFA so far to endear W11 to me. The one feature that may make me change my mind is ability to have real different desktops as promised in launch. Virtual desktops were always just a fancy gimmick to handle open apps. I always said they were a waste of space and the feature we really wanted was different desktops e.g. one for work, one for home etc.

You may end up being disappointed here. Unless this changes, as it stands now, you still cannot really have different desktops. The only difference between virtual desktops is that you can change the wallpaper, but otherwise all the icons are the same.

What I would really like is actual customized desktops where I could have different icons on each virtual desktop.
