Solved Local drive vs OneDrive

all I do is click "continue" and it continues and deletes. An annoying extra step.
That is normal for an Admin user deleting a file with such properties.
Unless you applied special permissions on that file yourself, the need for Admin approval will have been caused by wherever it is that the file is stored.

I don't see "administrator" as a user
Where are you looking?
The username "Administrator" is given to the Built-in Admin account only. All other Admin users have whatever username you have given to them.

Kelper: I don't mean to sound ostinate but why should I bother with a 3rd party app to do a factory reset? How can y ou possibly say reset is not a clean reinstall? (Unless you're meaning including One Drive is unclean.) Of course I didn't use Rufus because I was resetting everything. I don't even understand how i can possibly run anything while resetting. My only question about a reset is if you are still allowed to stop it in the middle, press shft+f10, and go through the process of elimination/bypass there before finishing the reset.

Try3: So is that why every time I"m deleting a file it says it needs admin permission? That's crazy. Either I'm an administrator or I'm not. All did was follow the directions (which I've now forgotten) to make the Administrator local.

..........

My preliminary reaction is that I should first try to rid the computer of One Drive in the installation I now have. Then if that doesn't work, reset again (#3) and with hope I can use shift+f10 (or as someone else suggested shift+fn+f10) to get to a command prompt and follow the instructions to turn off any back up stuff there.

Denis: that's part of the problem going on. I haven't created any users. That "googl" user was created by Windows or One Drive.

I guess Ive gotten myself mixed up in comparing what is going on in Windows 11 and Windows 10. I am both admin and a user on my Win10 laptop. But I have never ever seen ANY file say I need ANY permission. And I have never ever changed permissions for any type of file. So my reaction is that Win 11 is doing things much differently. Or else I have been getting away with murder on my Win10 laptop. :-)

If this applies to all locations, such as files within your own C:\Users\%UserName%\Documents folder, then I think your user profile has become corrupted.
There is no fix for this. You'd need to create a new user account.

Windows created a user if you clean installed.
Windows carried over any users if you upgraded from Windows 10.

To assess what is going on, I suggest you first post a screenshot of the results of running the command
Net User
and then assess them using
Check Account is Local Account or Microsoft Account - ElevenForumTutorials
but don't bother with these Windows-generated accounts [unless you have changed any of their properties]:-
Administrator

Both versions handle accounts in the same way.

I am both admin and a user on my Win10 laptop
The two types, in both Windows versions, are Admin user and Standard user.

But I have never ever seen ANY file say I need ANY permission.
Did you perhaps have UAC turned off?
I would not advise doing so. I always keep mine set to full.

You don't need any third party app, I just asked if you had used one. I'm suggesting a clean install of Windows. As I said, a clean install is not the same as resetting Windows and has nothing to do with a factory reset.

I won't waste any more time trying to help you.

Denis I appreciate the help but you're getting way beyond my paygrade. Perhaps you didn't notice that this computer is brand new, received last Thursday. I don't see how anything is possibly corrupted, let alone after two resets already. Idon't even know what UAC is to turn it off , let alone know where ti is ito do it accidentally.

Kepler: Wow. Take offense easily? I wasn't directing anything to you personally. Im just finding all of this very difficult and I have already been at wits end dealing with this on my own. I'm sorry if you took offense from my wording but I fail to see how it appears directed at you personally. I was taking your Rufus suggestion seriously, but it simply didn't make any sense to me.

Maybe someone else can explain what Kepler means with the difference of "clean install" and "resetting". This last reset, WItHOUt SAVING FILES put me right back to last Thursday when I first opened the box and the computer. That looked pretty clean to me.

Jim,

I suggest you address posts #24, #25 first.
If you are going to create a new user account or are going to clean install then it's best to get it done first.

I don't know what backups you have. I suggest you make backups of your own files, your hardware drivers & any app installation files then make a new system image before proceeding further.

You have a user account with the username Andy.
That is the only user account you have created so I don't understand that earlier comment about one called googl [perhaps I misunderstood that earlier post].

You can get further details about Andy by using the command
Net User Andy

This is all getting too crazy too fast.
I started following the instructions that glasskutter gives - the third post of this thread. I started to make a folder go to the default location and this is what happens:

I start here:
1789914698440.webp

Then I click "Restore Default" and \OneDrive disappears:
1789914752011.webp

Instead of clicking "Move" (mistake?) I click Apply and this what I get:
1789914814310.webp

So I click "Yes" and this is what I get:
1789914884791.webp

So I click "yes" to that and I get:

1789914921978.webp

So it starts by saying the "Pictures" folder doesn't exist. Then asks if I want to create. The says it can't move anything because it exists???
What am I saying "yes" to with the last operation it asks for?

Where did any reference to anything called googl come from in the first place?
Have you renamed any user accounts?

What was the response to running the command in post #37?
Plus
In a command prompt, enter the command
WhoAmI
to check what you are logged in to.

I still think you need to address the existence & function of your Andy user account before you even think about anything else.
