Locked Files

'm with you, I don't think it's a OneDrive problem.
I would normally agree with you, but we had another user who had either gone into recovery or he did an unsuccessful system restore (I don't remember which) Onedrive went nuts and moved all his files into the Onedrive recycle bin. He ended up calling MS support. I'm trying to find that post. I think under certain conditions Onedrive can be a factor when files are lost/moved/inaccessible, and from some of the things I've witnessed here, I always consider the possibility.

Hello @navanakorn and welcome to ElevenForum. :-)

You may want to try Unlock IT...

Unless, for some reason the old SSD is... Bitlocked.
Depending on the cause of the problem, it might help to post a screen shot of Disk Management...

To post a screenshot on this forum...

1. Take the screenshot, (or camera pic), edit it as desired, save to your desktop as .png or .jpg (max. size = 2MB)
2. Left click in your post, where you want to place the screenshot.
3. Click the Attach Files button at lower left, browse to your pic and click Insert.
4. After clicking Insert, I usually choose the Thumbnail (smaller) option, or there is a Full Image (larger) option.

If the "new" PrtSc key function is not to your liking... here is how to set it back to it's classic function...

i will start to collect images and post it here, i usually try more than several times to fix things

Guud Lurd!!!
How many more of these types of threads do I have to stumble across!?!?!?
There is something suspiciously evil going on with all this OneDrive bull- :poop: !!! Goodness sakes!!!
Yeah onedrive is surely evil as it ignores rhe undeniable fact that a bad workman blames his tool LOL.

ok, i have gathered screenshots from newly install windows11 located on the C: and these are what i can see. Noted that i came across locked file while my old C: was working and all i have to do is right click and go to file ownership option and choose personal and the lock icon will go away. i do not know how the lock suddenly appeared on some files as i never try to lock or even thinking about locking any of my files. anyway here is what i found

drives.jpg
as you can see the D: is the problem drive but show up just fine

sample.jpg
all files are there but some are locked. most the file i need are locked. i will use this file as example to copy and put it on the C: desktop and i got

issue2.jpg

if i continue with it then the following appeared

issue3.jpg

now, if i were to try to open the file i got the below message

issue.jpg

i examined the permission and i found

permission1.jpg

the Account Unknown i do not recognized which i am a bit concern. that account do have the same level permission as the admin and kcharuso(me). the thing is i cant change anything about the permission here. also, it should not interfere with the booting of the computer......right?!

i'll show you the booting issue i experienced. after the bios is loaded, the pc went to sleep mode with no display.

link to the booting issue

now, as i tried to repair it, i got these

IMG_6258.jpg

i choose repair

IMG_6259.jpg

all the restore points are gone. i had more than 10 restore points earlier. but i did not take screen shot of it and now is too late so...

IMG_6260.jpg

only option is to repair, but i got above message after the repair process

i am still loss, i tried unlock it with the several program i downloaded online but the programs indicated that the file is not locked which make me more confused. i tried using Rufus to boot and that failed too. did i missed something? what else i could do?

i understand the precaution things i should have done but thats another topic of discussion that i deserved to be grilled on but i just want to get this issue resolved for now. i still have hope and feeling that there is a way to get it to boot so i can do the right click and change the file ownership personal option.

again thank you for all the help

It's probably safe to say you can remove that unknown from permissions but it's probably safe to say you could also leave it.
As all you want are files, I assume you will be deleting all partitions afterwards and using the drive as a healthy secondary..

Try adding Authenticated Users? See if it changes anything.

  • Right-click on D: drive and click Properties.
  • Click on the Security tab.
  • Click Advanced.
  • Click the "Change Permissions" button.
  • Click "Add"
  • Click "Select a principal".
  • Type "Authenticated Users" and click OK.
  • Select "Modify", and click OK.
  • Click Apply, and click OK.
(focus on the steps more than the images, all I could find on short notice)

I would normally agree with you, but we had another user who had either gone into recovery or he did an unsuccessful system restore (I don't remember which) Onedrive went nuts and moved all his files into the Onedrive recycle bin. He ended up calling MS support. I'm trying to find that post. I think under certain conditions Onedrive can be a factor when files are lost/moved/inaccessible, and from some of the things I've witnessed here, I always consider the possibility.
My guess is that if the files were in the OneDrive Recycle Bin they must have somehow chose to delete them. Like I said, OneDrive is one of the most misunderstood app that MS ever released. I have to admit that I do use OneDrive even though I don't fully understand it. The reason I don't think it's OneDrive is because they have the files , they just can't do anything with them. That's also why I think it could be Bitlocker or Device Encryption.

When I bought a new Windows 11 desktop, I downloaded all my files that were copied and saved to an external drive.. Low and behold I couldn't open any of them on my new PC! Pictures, documents, purchase of our new house, etc.....they were locked in the cloud (n) I got most all of them back by turning off OneDrive and re-downloading them again straight from my Windows 10 computer.
i didn’t know that Onedrive can do that but wow im glad i never used it

I personally don’t think it has anything to do with OneDrive. But I could very well be wrong.

It’s an OLD OS drive plugged in a 2nd M2 slot.
I’ve had to stumble around a few of these. @Scott is right when mentioning Take Ownership. A few of the old OS drives I have had to work with outright refused me access to any folder, Documents/Downloads/Anything system related. I’ve had to take ownership of entire drives before.

But I am more interested in seeing the OP right click on the drive and seeing if it says “Turn Off Bitlocker” which would explain a lot.

The OP may never come back.
hi, i didnt see any bitlocker option avaliable no take ownership either. i stop messing with it for 2 days as i started to become reckless and yes im still stuck :(

I'm not trying to throw shade or disrespect here. Just calling it like I see it with my head in my hands.

99.9% of the time issues like this are completely self inflicted by the user. Without prior preparation, they try to shortcut things without taking into considerartion that modern windows is waaay different than it was back in the old days. Doing stuff like throwing an old GPT formatted system drive in as secondary drive without considering permissions on that drive are different, not considering device encryption (home) or bitlocker (pro) involvement , and not considering that if windows goes into recovery it can and will completely rewrite a users bootloader to the incorrect drive....this is all asking for trouble. They think because "they always did it before and it worked" that it still will.

Then there's the evil Onedrive factor which should always be dealt with first before anyone does any of that other stuff....the mess one can end up with is indeterminate. They don't THINK (or ask questions if they don't understand) before they act and keep digging their own hole deeper.

To top it off, many then turn around and blame modern windows for working exactly as it's now designed to.
(OK, Mama Glass, nuff said. I apologize in advance but these meds are working overtime and I'm in one of my "moods" and it's not a good one. Hopefully, I'll be nicer tomorrow.)

totally guilty here. i should have read more and you are right. but everything aside, i believed 95%(or more including me)of the users are not going to know what you knew though right?! and thats why i came here where i can get answers. i went everywhere prior but didnt get admin level answers like here. no disrespect taken at all but thank you actually.

If they sign-in to their MS account they should be able to access their OneDrive files on-line. I'm using the Canary builds and I can still access file from drives taken out of other computers. Even files located in Users folders. I do get the you don't have permission to open the folder warning but it's just a matter of clicking OK.
i have to be honest, i have no idea what you are talking about but it sounds really robust . i and ill find out more about it.

My guess is that they found the solution and are too embarrassed to admit it was a silly mistake they were making.
nope, still stuck hahaha. i dont get embarrassed about my stupidity i think the action itself is kindda funny but the result is surely expensive. :)

I would normally agree with you, but we had another user who had either gone into recovery or he did an unsuccessful system restore (I don't remember which) Onedrive went nuts and moved all his files into the Onedrive recycle bin. He ended up calling MS support. I'm trying to find that post. I think under certain conditions Onedrive can be a factor when files are lost/moved/inaccessible, and from some of the things I've witnessed here, I always consider the possibility.
i hope that is not my case but i wouldn’t know if that is so. thats over my head but it sure sounds crazy hard to fix
