I have a 4TB Western My Book and a 8TB Seagate . The WD is about 6 or 7 years old and has about 300GBs
left on it. I always leave space. The 8TB Seagate is about 4 years old and has 2.7 TBs left on it.
Don't forget that you won't get the full 4 or 8TB on a drive (any drive).

You may have missed my point.

Newegg lists a number of 6TB external drives.

I didn't check each one, but I believe that none use 2.5" HDDs.

The listing on eBay is either mistaken, or a scam.

Even when they don't say whether the drive is 2.5" or 3.5" if it comes with a power adapter then I assume it is a 3.5" drive. 2.5" drives generally can get enough power from the USB interface itself. 3.5" drives require more power than the USB port can provide.

Listings for external drives sometimes contains wrong or misleading information. I have seen listings where both hard drives and solid state drives use used to describe the same drive. That makes me distrust anything said about the drive.

You can generally get a feeling what a certain drive size should cost by comparing different listings. If the cost is much lower than average then you have to makes sure what you are not getting is not a scam. Also, if a certain size should not even exist for that form factor then it is very possibly a scam. I try to buy drives made by well established manufacturers. The only exception is when I have determined that a drive has sufficient number of positive reviews to make me want to buy it.

I wasn't trying to be obscure, but I could have been clearer.

The idea was that if you can't obtain a bare 2.5" 6TB HDD, you probably can't buy one in an external enclosure. My apologies if that wasn't obvious.

I see that Seagate makes a 5TB 2.5" HDD, though. Probably not to be found in a $40US external drive.

I think that having multiple 2.5" drives in RAID could be discounted as well.

I work in the enterprise IT space and for many server hard drives, and high-end storage solutions like 3par, emc, netapp...getting refurbished drives on warranty replacements is pretty standard.

How are they refurbished ? Just the platter or the arm as well and keep the cases.

No idea. They never tell you. It just comes in a box with a refurbished tag on it. I think they are required to tell you.

That's akin to taking your car to the dealership and they tell you that all has been repaired
and not tell you what was done. I think I'd like to know as well.

I just purchased a 4TB HDD (7200RPM) for $21. . . That'll work until I can get what I actually want. The 2TB NAS drive (pulled it out of the NAS Enclosure years ago), I don't know if there's something with the drive or what. . Not sure what I can use to test it. I want to definitely transfer everything off of it before I completely erase it.

Exactly. I was rather shocked, as I said earlier in here, Australian laws are pretty tight on replacements. And like pparks1 said, mine just had stickers on them with no information.

I bought 4 WD 4TB (maybe 3TB) NAS drives (I could get the model if I have to) they ended up in my sons computer, slowest things I’d ever used. However I don’t think I was using them as they were intended to be used. I’m not that clued up on stuff like that. $$$ more important to me.

Well, with our enterprise contracts we had guaranteed parts delivery within 4 hours. As long as the replacement part went in and worked, I didn't care. If it called home again, another part would arrive within 4 hours. I had more things to worry about than what the previous history was on the replacent part.

I bought a refurbished Mac mini and was never told the reason it was refurbished. But it had full warranty and support from Apple, so I didn't care whatsoever.

My son bought a B stock 2080 super from evga. They didn't tell us why it was b stock.

I bought a B stock 5 string bass guitar and was never told the reasons it wasn't sold as new.

I don't think you can compare a bass guitar with hdds or notebooks.
I would still like to know how and why. That's just my nature.

But where would a drummer be without the bass? It’s an intricate piece of equipment, otherwise the whole band falls to pieces
