Lotus 123

Since this site uses English I did a translate for you.

I also use Lotus SmartSuite 9.8, have 9.7 on disc. I started with Lotus 1-2-3 on a work computer on MS-DOS 5 and put it on my home computer in '92. Back then the 3-button mouse mostly used the middle button with CAD programs like AutoCad when creating drawings. I don't think Lotus caught up with the scroll wheel over time. Pressing down on the wheel will click on the cell the pointer is on.

And No, I don't speak French, let www.duckduckgo.com do it for me.
Sorry to have bumped into you. I didn't mean to offend you. I'm not fluent in English but I would use Google translate

No offense and don't worry about it. Sometimes my attempt at being precise gets in the way, learned to do that when dealing with pilots.

Hi friends :-)

We will follow the recommendations, thanking Google translation and continue in English.

Very happy to see that 123 still makes the happiness of some followers of this old software that I started using in version 1 with floppys on IBM PC then on my Olivetti M21 (bought in 1985 and still have in my attic!)

I would be happy to continue to exchange with Philibert because the problems that I encounter are with the French versions of 123 and W10. Maybe in a private message?

What do you think?

I wish my old microsoft games that ran on 7 would run on 10 and 11 but they have glitches. Progress doesn't always move in the direction we prefer. I think 7 was the best windows ever released. I miss it.
The games DO work -- get from the Winaero site !!!!

VM's are actually very efficient these days -- a problem running essentially very old software on modern OS'es like W10/W11 is that these are updated quite frequently - and any updates may render the program inoperable and might not have any get arounds to fix it.

Running in a VM you can run the program until "The end of the lifetime of the Universe" if you want.

If you just need one or two applications - then a VM will "Eat" so little of your resources" you probably won't even know its running. Plenty of help on these forums on how to set these up and use them - plenty of Free software around for the virtualision such as VMWare workstation, Oracla's Virtual box and Linux's KVM/QEMU -- and if you have W10/W11 pro don't forget also HYPER-V which is very efficient too.

I still have some hardware (Minidisc recorder - pro studio model), HP plotter, Vinyl Disc record cutter etc which ll need XP -- runs perfectly as a VM on W11 or Linux Hosts. You can isolate the VM from the Internet if you are paranoid about security - just share files between Host and VM.

Cheers

I am interested to read that several members are using Lotus 123 successfully with Windows 10, 64 bit. Like others I have used 123 over some 30+ years and should value access to some 123 data files after having updated to a SSD 512 MB after previously using the same laptop (Acer Aspire 5733) with a 640 GB HDD. 123 ran perfectly before the disk upgrade. I have Lotus SmartSuite 9.8 on a disk. Akin to other users I have found this impossible to install to the C: drive because there is no option to switch to the C: destination even when the said drive is listed. It has been suggested (eg. Tom's Guide) that the new C: is simply too large for 123 to recognise at installation. A suggested remedy is to partition C: down to a 640 GB sort of size and then re-try the installation. This sounds to have worked for some users but not for me. Does anyone have any experience or ideas please? Thank you for reading. Richard Notts, UK chhrp@aol.com and post here

Actually, according to your line the SSD 512MB drive is way too small but maybe you meant 512GB? I have Lotus SmartSuite 9.8 installed on my 512GB SSD with a 2TB HDD for storage. I've never encountered a drive as too large for Windows-based programs but there are some limitations in the BIOS and that isn't known, not enough information in your My Computer. The office-type programs don't change the characteristics of the drive installed upon and Windows doesn't usually except maybe at its initial setup. Back in the mid-'90s I had a 540MB HDD running MS-DOS 6 and Windows for Work Groups 3.11, after that came Windows 95.

Totally disagree about W7 being best - I recently went to a client who was still using it ! It was like pulling teeth using it.
The world has moved on.

Re. your games, run them in a virtual machine of W7 (preferably not connected to internet). A modern pc will run the old games as fast in a vm as on hardware of the past.

As far as best Ms OS -- at the time I think either XP or W2k3 server were the best - and I still actually prefer the interface especially the Luma black one

-- however W7 was also OK at the time but it had ever so annoying quirks like always wanting to update when shutting down etc. W10/W11 are far better. Also W7 security was a joke .

Nowadays you need extra additions to the OS kernel to manage the vast increase in CPU instructions and for handling multiple cores. thereads and co-processors efficiently plus better integration of fast I/O bus and controllers on modern mobos to handle things like nvme storage in the best manner possible.

Cheers

Dear all,
I also continue to use Lotus 123 (Millenium edition). I started using Lotus in 1981 o 82 - can't remember, Does not matter,

In the office I use Lotus 123 with my PC running Windows 11 without any problems - just an unending series of upgrades.

This summer, because ofm traveling requirements, I bought a HP laptop - superlight.

I was able to install the program - apparently - but I have been unable to open any of my spreadsheets.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Hello Adolfo,
- Can you create a new sheet?
- In the "FILE" menu then "OPEN" do you have access to your directory where your old files are located?

Hi Adolfo. I am the guy who wrote MB in place of GB !!

Are you sure that 123 has installed properly in your HP Laptop? I had problems as I described.

But then I tried a second option on my Lotus Millennium 9.8 disk initial menu that seemed to be to run from the disk. Being a very much a layman in all this I am unclear as to how the installation was effected. But it works. I selected just the Spreadsheet option.

I must say what a joy it is to use Lotus 123 again, like an old friend with smooth and logical operations. I just could not get on with OpenOffice with which I opened my old 123 files. So much missing or cumbersome.

My first install of 1-2-3 was in '92 on a 120MB motherboard, 4MB RAM running on an AMD 386/40MHz CPU, all put together by Hewitt-Rand with a 14" CRT monitor and Panasonic 2124 Dot-Matrix printer with the color option.

The spreadsheet just blocks and 5' later I get a message that 123 does not function
