Just out of curiosity, how long does it take for you to create an image backup in Macrium? Just created one today before installing a new program and this is how long it took for me to make one (my data are on separate drive)...

(It is the first day of Spring, so it makes sense to make a seasonal image backup. Create yours now and post your time... :giggle: )

Update:
System OS is installed on M.2 Gen 4 SSD (75GB/476GB). Image is written to a regular 7200rpm HDD.
Ryzen 9 3900X CPU. No overclock.

I use the Full backup mode and it takes nearly 2 hours to complete.

I think the last full backup I did took just over 8 hours, but the incrementals take 15-30 minutes each.

On a relatively new computer... it takes about 75 seconds per 20GB of data.
I have 38GB total on my C: drive, and it takes me 2:30 to make a full OS backup.

That's from a 2.5" SSD to a fast hard drive.

Nothing is overclocked and specs are up to date.

I have used Macrium in the past for creating an image and never, ever was it anywhere near 4minutes 26seconds. Looking at the usage on your drives well exceeds what I was imaging.

On a relatively new computer... it takes about 75 seconds per 20GB of data.
Which is close to the time I got.

1647800218903.png

So, 75GB/20GB= 3.75
> 3.75 x 75 sec = 281.25 sec
> 281.25sec/60sec = 4.68 minutes...

OP gives no information on how much data, age of PC etc. So impossible to even guess.

But my experience on a low end Atom travel 32GB device, I takes about 8 minutes per 10 GB to usb drive (more over wifi)

On my low-mid range AMD 10 backup/travel laptop (SATA SSD) it takes about 3 minutes per 10 GB (more when I had an HDD).

On my mid-high end Intel I7 with NVME drives main laptop, it takes about 45 seconds per 10 GB.

So, speeds can vary by a factor of ten or more depending on configuration.

I must admit I do fulls much more now as it normally only takes 3 minutes now. I still do incrementals but mainly on an adhoc basis when messing around with regedits or software testing.

I don't know where you got the 75 seconds per 20 GB. The information I find when doing a web search is;

If your cloning process takes 87 minutes to clone 500GB data, it is the average speed.Dec 6, 2021

My search criteria was "what is the average speed for cloning a 500GB hard drive." If you use the same search and read the results, they seem to differ from yours.

Well let's see...

500/20 = 25
25x75 = 1875
1875/60 = 31.25 minutes.

We're not talking about cloning. We are talking about making backups.
Cloning is a bit slower, because it uses Sector by Sector copy, rather than Intelligent Sector copy.

Intelligent Sector copy, ONLY copies the sectors with data. Sector by Sector copies ALL sectors, with data or not.

On top of that... it does depend on your hardware as @cereberus mentioned.

Lastly... with modern backup software, there really is no need to clone. Just make a backup, and restore it to the new drive.

Here's an example....

I had just installed Win 10 in May 2020 (clean install). Come Oct 2021 when Win 11 officially came out...
I just bought another 500GB SSD, and restored one of my Windows 10 backups to that new SSD.
Then I did an In_place upgrade from Windows 10 (on the new SSD) to Windows 11.

So now I have a 500GB SSD with Windows 10, and another 500GB SSD with Windows 11.

Both SSDs are identical except for the C:\ and EFI partitions (one is Win 10, the other Win 11)

Image1.png

000000 Win 10 vs Win 11.png

And whichever SSD I have hooked up... File Explorer is the same for both....
The 8TB is just a copy of the 4TB (which was starting to fill up).

2TB SSD 3/4 full to 5TB external HDD.
Full image = 4-5 hours including verifying.
Incremental = 5min + incl verifying depending on how much has changed.

I am sorry but you are incorrect - cloning also uses Intelligent Sector Copy by default. If target drive is smaller, it can only use Intelligent Sector copying.

I am sorry but you are incorrect - cloning also uses Intelligent Sector Copy by default. If target drive is smaller, it can only use Intelligent Sector copying.

I am doing 3 minutes per 10 GB with my current hardware. Good to know that it could be 4 times faster, but that's beyond the point of diminishing returns for the $ for me.

You are misinterpreting it - it also uses Intelligent Sector Copying by default if target drive is same size.

By default intelligent sector copying is selected - I pasted image from Reflect.

Go and look if you do not believe me.

We are not talking about what cloning is but how it does it - Intelligent Sector Copying only copies sectors being used i.e, it does not copy sectors containing files that have been deleted.

Let me rephrase it...

Cloning takes... LONGER. :)

It depends on cpu and drive. A very slow CPU with fast drive could take longer to compress image than a clone. Admittedly not very likely though.

Anyway Intelligent Sector cloning will be much faster than a Full Sector clone if drive is only partly used.
