Solved Manually uninstalling Java

Java has updated. I've noticed in the past, installing the latest jre (in this case jre-8u471-windows-x64) over the last one will sometimes end in duplicate installations, so I've gotten in the habit of uninstalling the old copy, before installing the new one. Yet, this time, I seem to have gotten a bad uninstall, it locked up mid way thru, and I had to force uninstall via HiBit. Now, I can't install 471. I downloaded a the JavaUninstallTool from Java, but that seems to do nothing. *sigh*. So, what files/directories/entries do I need to manually remove/delete so I can re-install Java. I've even already tried reinstalling jre-8u461-windows-x64, but that one won't install either.

reinstall the version you unsuccessfully uninstalled. then uninstall it via revo. then install the newer one

I did try that last night, it wouldn't re-install.

weird, I ran the java uninstall tool again this morning, this time it did finish the uninstall, and I was able to install the updated version. No clue what was different than 9 hours ago, but it's done. Thanks to all that read and dacrone for their suggestion!

As far as I know, installing newest Java version will detect old versions and remove them automatically after finish installing. No need to manually remove the old versions, just install the new version and it will prompt you to uninstall the old versions after it finishes. Also I would suggest to install both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Java so you have it available for both 32-bit and 64-bit applications that need it. Not only browsers use Java, but some applications as well. For example I use AVCHD Calculator (32-bit) to calculate the bitrate for creating an AVCHD-DVD disc.

Interesting. In the five years or so I've had this system, I've only ever had the 64bit Java installed, and never bumped into any issues. I will keep that in mind if I install any software that requires the 32bit version. Thanks for the tips!
