May Need To Build My Own Computer System

Hello folks,

I just thought of something. I am in the process of getting a new computer; found what to purchase. My issue is getting items I feel I really don't need.
Here, Build Your Own Custom Dell Precision I found out I can put together my own. I used to build my own many years back. Where can I get the guts, since i already have two Dell systems, both T5810 Precisions. Below are what I currently have.

1. Dell Precision Tower case as in link above, with power supply.
2. Memory. Would have to get a board that will take my memory properties.
3. Storage.
4. Graphic card.
5. Sound card.

So, what I really need would be a motherboard, processor, and Windows 11 Pro, that will match my current RAM.
With the above link, I will have to get the computer case I already have.
Where would be the best reputable site to get the three items I need?

Just want to make sure you do realize that company sells refurbished systems...right? Their statement says
PCSP specializes in procuring, building, and selling a large variety of refurbished servers and workstations.

I feel obligated to give my opinion here. You can't have a modern machine using 10 year old parts no matter how you slice it.
IMO you need to change your direction and not attempt such a Frankenstein. You would be spinning your wheels, spending money, and not gaining anything. Either purchase pre-built or If you want to attempt to self-build a modern machine go to some place like PCPartsPicker. https://pcpartpicker.com/

Going by the specs,the Precision 5810 you have was released in 2014, uses socket LGA2011-v3 motherboard with Intel c612 chipset, Xeon e5-1600 v3 series or xeon e5-2600 v3 series cpu, and uses ddr4 2133 ecc ram. (TPM 1.2)T, Neither of these cpus are compatible with windows 11 nor is the tpm.

Going by the specs the Precision 7810 that company is re-selling was also released in 2014, uses socket Dual LGA 2011-v3 motherboard with Intel c612 chipset, Xeon e5-2600 v4 series cpu, and uses ddr4 2400 ecc ram. That cpu is not on the compatibility list either, Its specs say the board may have tpm 1.2 OR 2.0 depending on if it was released for Windows 8 or 10.

To put it simply, both of these machines are not windows 11 compatible. If that company you listed is selling them with windows 11 it will be on unsupported hardware.

Facts to know if you persist on this path.
Dell products have mostly proprietary components, especially mobo and PSU. Any parts you find will be used or refurbished. Ram is usually backward compatible within its own generation, BUT it will only run at the speed it is rated. Precisions are workstations and can not be overclocked. PSUs must be rated to handle the wattage needed based on your installed components,

Glasskutter is spot on, none of the available processors for those machines are supported for Windows 11. The list of supported Intel processors is here:

I second, third and fourth everyone who has responded. Bad idea unless your goal is to turn it into a Linux machine. When it comes time to replace my current home builds I'll probably go with something like a mini, probably Beelink. You'd be amazed how powerful these minis are and you can get a good one (AM4) for under $400.
My Mac Mini M1 is a sixteenth the size of my two midi towers and just as powerful however I will (for the near future) always have a Windows gaming machine. Mac and Linux just aren't there yet when it comes to gaming.

By the way this suggestion is simply food for thought.

It was just a thought I had. I have never been shy to ask questions since one never knows.

I get the issues. I would think an outfit would have the bundle (board, CPU, etc to match) for current Windows, like I used to know back in the days. I get what you wrote about "both machines are not Windows 11 compatible". The compatibility would be from the 'guts' of the machine, which I refer to as the "bundle'. Again, am just curious to know.

We'd have fewer landfills and our environment would thank you if it worked this way but I don't think you're following what the term "Proprietary hardware" means. Each Dell model's case is designed to use specific motherboards/psus with specific connectors specifically designed for that product line/production year form factor. By buying OEM the user doesn't have "other options" to go out in the marketplace to purchase from 3rd parties every time he wants to upgrade his hardware. He is pretty much locked into using whatever he purchased or it's like replacement.

Please educate me! How would the case know that a different motherboard and it's components were replaced?
Through the power button, power supply or any sensor in the case (shell)?

You appear to misunderstand "glasskuter's" post.

Dell tends to use proprietary components like motherboards and PSUs. It may not be practical to swap in a new industry standard motherboard. It simply may not fit in the case, and the Dell PSU may use nonstandard connections.

That may not be true of every Dell PC, but you'd have to study the service manual for the model to be sure.

A case is a piece of metal and doesn't know anything. A 3rd party board won't work in a proprietary case because it's not designed to. It's connectors(front and back) and mounting holes physically don't match up.

Dell has always used such proprietary standards, especially so in it's flagship systems, Optiplex and Precision.

Don't forget the ever popular proprietary 24 pin ATX (or less depending on the form factor) PSU connectors Dell like to use on both their power supplies and motherboards making it impossible to use a standard PSU on their motherboards or a retail motherboard with their PSU's.

Not sure if that is still a thing with Dell, but from looking at pictures of the OP's current Dell motherboard, the 24 pin connector is far from the ATX standard.

Ah, yes. Been there, done that, got several T-shirts. It's even more prevalent in todays Dells and harder to deal with. I had a rebuilt Precision once with the power supply outside the case with a big hole cut in the side. All kinds of adapter power cables. Biggest mess you could ever see.

I wouldn't build a new system around memory I already have, It will constrain you. Besides, memory is pretty cheap right now.
I would not reuse a DELL power supply for anything, buy a new one. (it might be proprietary Interface to their motherboard etc. anyways).
Different case. I think DELL cases are pretty funky and limiting.

As others have mentioned, DELL uses proprietary parts, and does sell refurbished computers.

If you want to build your own... get away from DELL or any other chain store.

Respectfully, I have to disagree. You didn't follow the thread all the way through. Microcenter sells no such parts that would work for this user. This OP's original question involved purchase of a mobo, , cpu and psu that would run his existing ram in a proprietary Dell Optiplex 5810 case and be compatible with Windows 11. He can't. The only parts he can use in that case with his ram are genuine Dell mobo and proprietary PSU which can only be found as used now due to its age. The cpu that can be used in the required mobo has been out of production for years so would also have to be found used.. and it still would not be Window 11 compatible.

This user now understand the obstacles preventing him from following through with his original idea, so I hope anyone else who might get to this thread researching a similar idea regarding a proprietary system can understand the why now as well.
It's all moot anyway, as this poster has wisely decided to purchase an OOB system that runs 11 on modern hardware, albeit I believe the system he has chosen also uses some proprietary hardware.
