I have using Acronis True Image (perpetual) since 2015. I was backing up two computers with ATI 2017 and one with ATI 2018. ATI 2018 worked fine but ATI 2017 had an annoying bug. I always enabled the Automatic Cleanup option so that ATI would delete old backups when space was needed for new backups. The problem was that for some reason Automatic Cleanup would become disabled by itself causing the drive to fill up and the new backups to fail. In mid 2020 I wanted to just use the same version of ATI so I bought 3 licenses for ATI 2021 (perpetual). That was a big mistake for two reasons:
  • The GUI for ATI 2021 is painfully slow. For example, to changes between backups in the menu seems to take forever
  • Mobile backups in the last build of ATI 2021 is broken
I had hoped that Acronis would fix the backup for mobiles devices but Acronis said there would be no more builds. Their solution was to buy a subscription.

I liked Acronis otherwise so came up with my own solution. I asked and was able to downgrade all my ATI 2021 licenses to ATI 2018. Now not only is the ATI GUI much faster but the mobile backups work again.

I use Macrium (paid Home licence). I won't ever use anything else.

I dumped Acronis 3 years ago as it became bloated. I've been a Macrium user ever since and it's been very reliable without a single error.
The daylight robbery of an Acronis subscription licence is just not acceptable to me.
The difference in backup image size is irrelevant with the size of drives these days.

I dont have any difficulty reinstalling should the need arise. Quick and easy.
Though I will image various test scenarios I am fiddling around with on different partitions/disks/systems.
I find that wim image backups are most suitable for that, I particularly like the ability to exclude stuff.
For occasional images of my main system, I would use wim format.
Vhd (x) has advantages as well for which wbadmin command can be used, and some 3rd party tools offer it.
I mostly use wimlib. There are other ways, for example dism++ is handy if you want a gui.
If you wanted to do it on a running os, wimlib has the --snaphot command and dism++ has little vss box in the ui.

For the average user ( non geeky) It is sensible to make images every now and then. I usually suggest aomei because it is very easy for them to use.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.
It works when I run W10 pro but not when I'm running W11 pro.

Are you dual booting W10/W11? If so, is Macrium installed separately in both? Have you tried reinstalling Macrium in W11?

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

The Win10 and Win11 Macrium installations are separate. They are both in their own Program Files folders.

I did notice a glitch in this Win11 installation. Clicking on "ControlPanel -> Programs -> Uninstall a program" does nothing. This installation of Win11 may have started out as an insider build.

I've had this Win11 for several weeks and never saw a problem before. I've been testing making backups, so now I'll try a restore.

Does sound like a faulty install. You could try downloading the Reflect installer from Macrium and running that to reinstall Reflect.

I've used AOMEI Backupper myself. It's a simple and fairly reliable image application, but it can cause problems if you ever decide to uninstall it.

Some systems are rendered unbootable. And from what I've read on the forums, support is not that great when you run into problems. Hopefully, you won't have any issues.

I can personally say that I've had issues with uninstalling it.
But luckily for me, I use more than one system image application. I never rely on just one.

I've uninstalled it with no issues. So.. I doubt the comments by any other forum than this one. ;)
