Media Creation Tool Change


Split WIM's can't be mounted or updated in split form. So that's not a real benefit to any real IT admin, who's expected to keep install images somewhat updated on a regular basis. MCT doesn't serve the same role as the VL monthly images, you're stuck with a random delivery schedule.

26100.4349 is the current MCT build, and that might end up being the last 24H2 version from MCT.

While it is super easy to do manually, I created a batch file to automate this, and it works perfectly. With the size of the install.xxx growing steadily every year, I foresaw this years ago and moved to the dual partition scheme literally years ago.

Sure if you have enough knowledge it is easy but for vast majority of public, they would not have that level but many would have enough knowledge to fo a basic copy iso files to a fat32 drive.

We need to look at bigger picture?

I think only compatibility benefits and nothing else. Rufus creates two partitions by default.

If you have install.swm you can convert the two swm files into one Install.wim
dism /export-image /sourceimagefile:install.swm /swmfile:install*.swm /sourceindex:1 /destinationimagefile:install.wim /Compress:max /CheckIntegrity

If you have install.wim you can convert Install.wim into two swm files
dism /Split-Image /ImageFile:"install.wim" /SWMFile:"install.swm" /FileSize:4000

But the general public is going to choose the ISO option or the USB option, not make an ISO and copy it to the USB.
