In order for all the MS apps to update from the MS Store, do I need to sign in with my Microsoft account or do the updates work even for a Local account?

  • Free apps → Update fine on a Local account and are automatically updated by the store, even when using a local account. The Store also automatically handles updates for apps that came preinstalled with Windows
Paid apps or apps with subscriptions → Updates may fail or be blocked unless you’re signed in, because the Store needs to confirm you own the license
Cross‑device sync → Updates only works with a Microsoft account.

Do I still need to sign-in using my Microsoft account to the MS Store itself for the free apps to update itself?

Windows Update will silently upgrade all installed Store apps, no matter your account type.

The Store app is only required to browse for new apps, or manually select which apps for install or update. A MS Account is required if you want the Store to remember your "purchase history" (like app stores on a smartphone), or to get paid apps or content.

But once a Store app is installed, then WU does the work. This is how MS replaces an app like Photos or Paint when a new version is released.
