The ability to reduce 'Recommended' to just one line, and to group apps in a named group on Start is now in the 22H2 Insider Beta builds, and should make it into the 22H2 feature update, expected in the second half of this year.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 4GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus the Insider Beta, Dev, and Canary builds as a native boot .vhdx.

I can't understand how a feature like that takes so long to be implemented when it should have already been there at launch.
One big reason to install ExplorerPatcher right there

Because you cannot snap your fingers and *poof* it's there. Do realize that Windows 11 taskbar is a complete re-write of what was a well oiled machine in the Windows 10 taskbar. Add to that the limited development cycle that it went through versus Windows 10 (whose early build leaks were out 9+ months before the first official release of 10, versus 4 months of active Beta (Alpha, really) testing of 11 before worldwide release), and we're effectively running a beta product 6 months after launch. Nothing new for Microsoft though, they always seem to miss on every other OS. While I do like some of Windows 11, mainly the back end stuff (almost the exactly same thing I said about Vista back in the day), it's sorely lacking in a lot of things. Thankfully, though, I have a machine that is well over driven versus what Windows 11 needs, instead of trying to force Vista to work on an old P4 machine with 1 GB of RAM lol.

My biggest gripe is incorporating features solely beneficial to a tablet / touch user into the desktop default is pure stupidity. There is a reason that Tablet mode exists - relegate your tablet-related fixes / improvements there, don't put them in the desktop mode where I don't #@$%^@#%$^ need them. If I didn't use alternate file managers instead of Explorer, I'd probably have gone back to 10 also. But, then again, that was why I did not like Windows 8 at all to begin with.

IOW - give me back my full right click menu, Microsoft, k, thanks.

Yes, I know - but it should be default to not use more options, and use the show more options only for tablet mode. That is my point.

Yes, I know - but it should be default to not use more options, and use the show more options only for tablet mode. That is my point.

Well yeah. But we already know (from Win 8 if nothing else), that MS is catering, solely, to the tablet/phone crowd.
That's also the only reason for "pins" on the START menu.
It must be hard for those tablet folk's fat fingers, to hit things on the old START menu. LOL

They even spaced the icons on the Taskbar, further apart, to achieve finger poking space.

I noticed that even Firefox is double spacing the bookmarks these days.

I found this hidden camera video of the average MS employee's job interview....

Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 13 years?
My RC Menu is back to the way I like it by using a great deal of Brinks Reg Hacks plus various 3rd Party apps without such apps I would have been back on Linux years ago. What burns me is that they come out with colorful Folders but on install they are the old yellow ones. I like the menu and Taskbar to be in the middle, I even had it there in Windows 7. I will stay with Windows as long as it is able to be modified to what I like.

Abra cadabra… Suggested Start menu design procedure
Step 1 - Copy the WinXP Start menu
Step 2 - Allow us to continue to tailor it to our own needs even though company IT staff hate that
Step 3 - Make any MS-desired changes optional
Step 4 - Keep Taskbar Toolbars just as they were for WinXP-Win7-Win10
Step 5 - If you want to keep company IT staff happy then just add in a non-tailorable [or Admin-only tailorable] default Start menu hierarchy in a manner that does not get in the user's way

Fingers crossed but I'm not holding my breath,
Denis
