Installing Microsoft Defender Public Preview

Getting started with Microsoft Defender

Unless I'm mistaken I do not see any version of Defender available for Home users. It is there for Business customers though.

I could be wrong but this Preview does appear to be the commercially available version to preview.

1644304595262.png

If I log in to my virtual machine it is not available at all. It cannot even be found on the MS Store. But on a physical box, it is available.

It might help if you posted the "link" where you found that quote. :)
Post #15 from @Bree I wasn't quoting anything, it clearly states in the MS Store app description that it's for 365 Family or 365 personal use

Ah, that explains it. Normally I have the Store blocked in Bitdefender firewall.

Thanks @DigitalGoat though that is so crazy they don't manage the names they use very well and make it so confusing.

The one currently in the STORE app is at least 8 months old and the EULA plainly says it is a Commercial use product.

Your link makes more sense, too bad Microsoft doesn't.

Well, I figure if my institution thinks I need it, they'll provide it to me. Otherwise, I'm not going to concern myself with it anymore. I feel sufficiently protected with what I already have.

Hi folks

Seems to be working here -- it's labelled as Windows 365 defender though :

Screenshot 2022-02-08 113402.png

I had to create a new Ms account though -- no big deal -- and will see what it actually does. BTW I have no 365 accounts (office/Azure) anywhere.

I'm running on a W11 preview release so if it all goes bonkers I don't care. Win release 22543-220122-2315

Could be the 'Biz version as I don't use the Store. Anyway I'll see what it does (if anything).

Cheers
jimbo

I still don't get it. Is this like the Enterprise version of Defender? Defender for businesses? It's going to require a subscription so what happens to the free Windows Defender?
That seems to be precisely it, Endpoint protection enhanced by the experiences on other subscribed machines. Nothing happens to the local Defender. It appears to provide an additional layer of protection rather than a replacement.

With the integrated Microsoft 365 Defender solution, security professionals can stitch together the threat signals that each of these products receive and determine the full scope and impact of the threat; how it entered the environment, what it's affected, and how it's currently impacting the organization. Microsoft 365 Defender takes automatic action to prevent or stop the attack and self-heal affected mailboxes, endpoints, and user identities.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

Here is hoping that the "Endpoint protection enhanced by the experiences on other subscribed machines" will trickle down to home users.

Pretty well all Windows devices on my (and everyone's) LAN will receive "threat signals" > all Windows devices on the LAN would benefit from such 'enhanced Endpoint protection'. MS 365 subscription would be a small price to pay.

Somehow, I believe that MS already provides such protection for home users (with or without MS 365 subscription) albeit perhaps limited to what can be automated on an as needed basis. I seem to remember reading that the plain but cloud-assisted Defender is sensitized to regionally prevalent malware.

In any case, MS is doing good things (y)

The dashboard with your devices on it reminded me of a Sophos app that I looked at some years ago. I did not buy it, because the general malware situation was already improving at the time and Defender was getting better, too.

But hey, if MS comes up with a free add-on to the (residential) MS 365 subscription that I already have, I would gladly use the add-on, at least to monitor my most important devices, it's nice to see all green icons in a row

Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 13 years?
Here MS goes again..with their stupid double naming conventions that cause nothing but confusion for the masses. It would be so simple to just call it Microsoft 365 Premium Security or some such and leave the word defender out of it.

Or just Defender dashboard, that's pretty much all it is

While I'm at it there's another dumb thing no one as mentioned. (Excuse the rant. I slept late this morning and have only had 2 cups of coffee and I'm bitchy until I've had at least 4.)

In Windows settings, under Privacy & Security, it's called Windows Security. Nowhere is the word Defender used. When you expand out all the section settings, Defender is still never used.

When a definition update comes down the pike, it's called Microsoft Defender Antivirus.

When one does a search on their computer for 'defender', it takes you to firewall settings.

If that's not the most confusing thing for a novice user, I don't know what is. It's like the MS folks want the confusion. It's just plain stupid that hundreds of people who've developed it for over a year can't see it.
