Microsoft doubles down on its strategy to get more Windows 11 users on Microsoft Edge

  • Staff
Microsoft has been adding new ways in Windows 11 to try to get more users to go with its Edge browser. Earlier this year, it changed the way users could set their default browsers, adding a bunch of new steps that required them to switch a number of settings manually in order to switch away from Edge. Last week, the company took another step by locking the Edge-specific protocol that enabled users to redirect programs to other Web browsers.

If you want a thorough explanation of what changed regarding the Edge protocol, I'd recommend this post from ghacks.net. In short, Microsoft blocked tools like Edge Deflector and Search Deflector, which were designed to make selecting a browser other than Edge more of a straightforward process.

Microsoft didn't do this by accident, and officials made it clear they aren't considering relenting on this. In last week's Windows 11 Dev Channel test build notes, there's a line that acknowledges its latest move. It simply says: "We fixed an issue where OS functionality could be improperly redirected when microsoft-edge: links are invoked."

I asked for a statement about whether the company intends to try to make switching to a browser other than Edge as difficult as possible with Windows 11. Please keep in mind; I am just the messenger here. A spokesperson sent the following:

Right click on the Taskbar and turn off Search. It's the first option.

Turning off Search in Taskbar settings does nothing to the search field in the Start Menu.

There are two fields in the start menu that I definitely don't need - Search and Recommended. Both are stubbornly refusing to be gone :ffs:

If you type an URL, Edge will ignore your default browser and take over. Try it and you'll see that Edge opens, but not your default browser.
I don't get it, where I am supposed to type in a URL? Blindly type into the Start Menu in Windows 10? Why would I do that?

Again, I don't have any search fields in Windows 10 Start Menu. I did establish that if I first click on the Start Button and then start typing, even though there is no "field" for it, some kind of search window will show up. This happens once I press one key. I see no reason to press another in this circumstance.

In Windows 11, which is where I am right now, this is what happens if I type "elevenforum.com" into the search field in the Start Menu

Are you complaining that pressing "Enter" now will result in Edge opening? Why would you expect otherwise? A "default" application is the program that is opening once you click on a file of a known type or a certain link. None of that is happening here. This is a Windows search application. To be able to access the internet - and I suppose it works here since I did not forbid that after the last update and I will once I get around to it - it probably uses browsing capabilities integrated into the system which means Edge and Bing. You don't expect them to integrate third-party software into the OS, do you?

Exactly! And I have made Firefox my default browser of choice! Why isn't that decision respected by Microsoft!?

Nicely put. It seems the ongoing argument here is an integrated function(s) of the OS, 10 or 11, is using it's own integrated apparatus to perform a task and should not be doing so according to previous posts. Also, no one seems to use this integrated function for anything. so.............. whole thing has morphed into a non-issue.

Let MS push Edge if they want to. They have around 12% of the browser market and are hungry. It's not being pushed on me anywhere I go. It's not in my face when I don't want it. It's not bothering me. So, I'll do what I've done for years. Ignore it. :)

Actually, TC, I've been using Search in both Windows 10 and Windows 11 for searching on my own computer. It really is convenient for my needs.

That said, I cannot believe what has just happened!

Someone gave a link to MajorGeeks for uninstalling Edge. Yep, against my better judgment, I did it. And it worked after a fashion. Search would find anything on my computer, but would no longer go out to the Internet, not even with Firefox. Now, that wasn't a real problem per se.

I decided I needed to reinstate Edge, even though I don't like its predatory ways. I went back to MajorGeeks and got the latest download of Edge and reinstalled. I must have hacked it off because now it won't even open. I tried every way possible to open it, and finally got to Search!

OH, MY Gootness! I typed in tenforums . com and it opened as it should! Oh, yeah, it did, but . . . It opened with Firefox!

OK, so what did I do to make it do that? For starters, I reinstalled Edge. Then I went into Settings and reset Firefox as my default browser everywhere Edge would let me. Yep, there are some things that cannot be changed! There are four Edge Settings that are pretty much unmovable and I do not know what they do.

I swear that's all I did, and now when I type in an URL in Search, Firefox takes me there!

I think I'm gonna quit while I'm ahead!

Yeah, but it would be nice to be able to let others who would like the same result know how I did it. :scream:

I clicked on the Start Button in Windows 11, then typed my URL there. Normally that's where Edge takes over, but so far, it's refused to open.

BTW, @AddRAM seems to have trouble opening Edge on two of his computers, so the above solution may not work if Edge comes back.

Congrats...

Thanks, but I knew that. I was interested to see if Wynona found a way to have that done auto or semi-auto. She seemed to imply that FF did that for her.

FF is my default browser and is set to open previous windows and tabs. I use vertical tabs and never close any tabs that I plan to use again. These are currently organized in 4 primary folders with about 130 saved tabs. The first 2 primary folders contain sites that are visited regularly.

A web search is started with Ctrl-T and typing in the search arguments.

Search on the Windows Start Menu is used for apps and features only.

Edge is used for 5 sites that seem to work better there than with FF (stricter blocking controls).

So far no issues with MS activities, and cannot see this changing in how I use the PC.

Firefox did put 'em there, TC. I have never put anything in that list; only dismissed the "sponsored" ones I'm not interested in. When I do that, FF replaces 'em with something else.

How does it (FF) know what to put there? It can't put every site you visit. Must be some rules or something to determine what gets added. I have a custom home/start page so I never see what you have, the "default" setup home page.
