Microsoft doubles down on its strategy to get more Windows 11 users on Microsoft Edge

  • Staff
Microsoft has been adding new ways in Windows 11 to try to get more users to go with its Edge browser. Earlier this year, it changed the way users could set their default browsers, adding a bunch of new steps that required them to switch a number of settings manually in order to switch away from Edge. Last week, the company took another step by locking the Edge-specific protocol that enabled users to redirect programs to other Web browsers.

If you want a thorough explanation of what changed regarding the Edge protocol, I'd recommend this post from ghacks.net. In short, Microsoft blocked tools like Edge Deflector and Search Deflector, which were designed to make selecting a browser other than Edge more of a straightforward process.

Microsoft didn't do this by accident, and officials made it clear they aren't considering relenting on this. In last week's Windows 11 Dev Channel test build notes, there's a line that acknowledges its latest move. It simply says: "We fixed an issue where OS functionality could be improperly redirected when microsoft-edge: links are invoked."

I asked for a statement about whether the company intends to try to make switching to a browser other than Edge as difficult as possible with Windows 11. Please keep in mind; I am just the messenger here. A spokesperson sent the following:

Google is littered with varying instructions on how to remove it but I haven't tried any of them. Tonight I was forced to use it after chrome failed to negotiate the website I was on so its not going anywhere.
Yeah, I currently keep it as a third browser choice since some websites can be picky about what browser you use especially certain government/military sites. Just looking at possible future options as MS tries to limit 3rd party browser use in the future. From what I read if you remove it Windows search etc. will still try to use it as the default web browser even though it's not installed.

I must be completely missing the point of this discussion. I have to admit, I have never even started Edge, let alone using it. For various reasons I prefer to use Firefox, but nothing of what's mentioned in this thread even rings a bell.

A browser is a program that lets me access web pages. If I want to go to a web page, I start Firefox and either click on a bookmark, or type in an address. How on Earth can Microsoft block that? Otherwise, I don't use a browser, so again, what's the problem?

Why would you click on links? I never do that. Why would I search outside of the browser? The only other search I use is in File Explorer and this does not yield any links.

I don't have that problem. If I want to search the web, I open a website of the search provider (be it Google or something else) and then search. I never use any "search bars", "search extensions", whatever. I don't understand why anyone would.

I'm getting real sick of the tactics MS keeps trying to force on me. Today, I've finally had it with Edge, I've had so many issues with it, especially lately and today was the last straw. I've installed Firefox today, set it as my default and am not looking back. Every time I go into certain programs and I bring up Edge, it keeps nagging me about not shutting down properly which is BS. Yes, there are "Fixes" one can google for, that don't work, so the easiest solution for me was just to install Firefox and I can stop using Edge. I'd uninstall it but of course, that's not possible, however I don't have to use it either.

For that matter, I don't have to use ANY MS products, and I have reminded them of this on numerous occasions. Windows * is supposed to be an Operating System, although they have done their best to try and glorify this but the bottom line is, they're not the only turkey on the farm.

I didn't say I disliked MS, nowhere in my post do I say that. I only use Windows because some of the games I play, require a Windows Operating System. I only made that point, to show that I'm trying to stay on topic, and any time any company tries to "encourage" people to change their ways because it suits that company, people should get upset because it sounds like an attempt to remove peoples' rights and choices.

There is an app on Majorgeeks to do just that but I would never use it. They claim it works. Not for me.(n)(n)(n) To remove EDGE.

Did you take an update today? Does "just" mean it just happened just now, or that you just noticed it just now?

I just used Start Search to search for tenforums.com, and just as before, it showed a link with the Edge icon, but clicking it opened 10F in my Chrome browser.
