No middle ground, where a vendor can do "add-ons" to the universal printer driver?

I could be wrong, but I see a very large can, say an oil barrel, just full of squirmy worms

I'm still running my 2009 Canon MP990 with the Canon drivers. Both scanner and printer are fully functional IN 25H2.

As a direct result of seeing this thread, I've just set up my Brother MFC-L2750DW using Windows Ready Print and everything is working just fine.

I have of course uninstalled all of the Brother bloatware that I had previously installed prior to enabling Windows Ready Print.

I have a Kyocera 2235DN and installed the Microsoft v4 Printer Driver.
Kyocera supply a Driver Download Package for a range of their Printers in one file and the current version of the old style driver is 236 MB and the V4 version is 160 MB.

Just checked, my older Brother HL-3170CDW is compatible, but my main printer, a Brother MFC-L3780CDW that is actually a later model is not compatible according to the little badge after the printer name. Also, my old Dymo LabelWriter isn't compatible.

Oddly, if I look on Microsoft's information pages, the list the Brother MFC-L3780CDW as Mopria certified but for some reason it didn't get the compatibility badge.

In any case, I'm not willing to give up my Dymo LabelWriter printer. I'm also not willing to replace perfectly working printers!, so I guess that leaves me out of this upgrade.

"Windows Ready Print" is turn on as default and I tried to install Canon printer 5 times without success - with CD/file from the internet. So I turn it off and then it installed. So this feature is very useless for me.

OK, here's a mystery! I have an older HP computer than I used Rufus to install Windows Pro so I could turn off the requirements for TPU, etc. and when I check the printers it appears it loves all my printers, even an ancient copy of Snagit screen capture!

Note: I'm running this through RDP, apparently that's why I'm getting all the redirected printers, another issue to deal with!

Do you have the PnP model? I have that model and I use it to print 1/2" wide labels for file tabs, medicine bottles (aging eyes) and "general" stuff. No need for wider labels or color.

if you do need to replace the label printer, what are your choices?

I have the Turbo 400, I've had it for probably 15 years. It's not the PnP model, I did have to install drivers for it. I have no idea what I'd replace it with, that's why I'm not eager to replace it. I bought it used for peanuts, and I've been using it ever since. Still works perfectly so I have no reason to replace it. This model will print 2" wide labels, but I have it loaded with standard 3 1/2" x 1 1/8" labels, it's really the only kind I use. If I need something smaller, I have a pair of scissors handy. :lmao:

I still have a box of the 2" labels that I've never loaded.

Color would add a whole level of complexity, these are just simple thermal printers. Color printer labels are also insanely expensive, and for my uses, I don't need that either! I have two color laser printers in the house, and they do all the color I need.

Thanks for the quick reply. My PnP printer uses a black carbon (?) ribbon that feeds along with the label strip to "print" onto the label strip.

Maybe if absolute worst comes about, you could use a VM with an older version of Windows to keep using that printer.

I'm not going to address replacing it until the end. :lmao:

I really like the Dymo thermal printers, the clone labels are really cheap, and it prints very quickly and quietly. I'd probably buy another Dymo thermal label printer if I need one. The fact that I've printed many thousands of labels over the years with this printer is a testament to it's durability. It's lasted a lot longer than any of my other printers, I think the laser printers are lucky to last ten years.

I buy the labels in ten roll lots, that's 3,500 labels. Right now, that package of labels is $15.19 on amazon, so that's less than half a penny per label. That's the only cost I incur printing them. I've bought them three or four times over the years, the box of labels lasts me several years.
