You're lucky, you got it when it was SkyDrive and have benefited from a 'grandfathering' offer when MS started to cut down of free space.

Yes, there are people who have enjoyed 25GB of free space, back when OneDrive was called SkyDrive and a Microsoft Account was called a Windows Live account. However, in 2012, Microsoft decreased the amount of free SkyDrive space to 7GB, but allowed people who already had 25GB of space to claim that amount for a limited time.

Fast forward to this week, when Microsoft increased the free space from 7GB to 15GB for all free users. People who already had the 25GB amount of free space grandfathered into their account have since discovered that technically, their free space has been reduced down to 15GB. However, they also saw that they have a "loyalty bonus" of 10GB of extra space, which basically means they didn't lose anything.

UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

My question is: if a user has 5 TB my files on OneDrive, now that the limit has changed to 2 TB, what happens? Will the files on that drive be deleted?

Each user had a 1TB limit, as explained in post #1.

Copilot is not worth that much. LLMs can also be made much more efficient, smaller, smarter and faster. They can be ran locally and privately on quite a huge range of hardware for free. We don't need huge server pools for this.
I've actually found copilot to be pretty decent. We mostly use Claude code at work, and a few of the guys laugh at me for using Copilot, but for a lot of things it returns answers a lot faster, so I always start there. If I cannot get the answers I want. Or they dont work, then its off to claude I go. Some of our official processes for getting things done now require using Claude code, so I don't have any options as to whether I use it or not.

I have played with some local AI models at home. I have a 32GB mac mini for this very task. While it does work, it is quite slow. For simple tasks and such when I am not in a hurry, its perfectly adequate. For for more complex coding type things, its really slow. You can buy a lot of chatGPT subscription time for thr price of a 5090 video card with lots of memory to stuff your LLM into.

I asked Copilot to analyze the article and got several interesting pages.

Hachman's goal was to find duplicate photos throughout OneDrive. [pcworld.com]

That's a very specific file management task.

Today's Copilot implementations are generally optimized for:
  • answering questions,
  • summarizing documents,
  • researching content,
  • generating text,
not acting as a full-fledged storage analysis engine.

I completely understand why he wanted that capability, but Microsoft's documentation never really positions Copilot as a OneDrive duplicate-photo manager.

He extrapolates from one bad experience to the entire product.

The article ends up sounding like:

"This feature didn't work the way I expected, therefore I may abandon Copilot altogether."
That's an emotional reaction, not necessarily a technical conclusion.

Copilot still performs quite well for:
  • document summaries,
  • writing assistance,
  • research,
  • image generation,
  • Microsoft 365 integration.
Even Hachman acknowledges that it works for some use cases.

I'd rate the article:
  • 80% valid criticism
  • 20% frustration-driven overreaction
The criticism of Microsoft's confusing licensing, inconsistent rollout strategy, and sometimes unclear feature capabilities is very fair. [pcworld.com]

However, I don't come away convinced that Copilot is fundamentally broken. I come away thinking Microsoft is still struggling to turn a collection of disparate AI features into a coherent product experience.

For power users who use Copilot primarily as a research and troubleshooting partner, I think it is already considerably more useful than the experience Hachman describes. The gap between Microsoft's marketing and the product's actual capabilities is the real issue, not necessarily the underlying AI itself.
